Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2003 SOUTH EL MONTE, Calif. — California Gov. Gray Davis (search) on Saturday took a dig at Republican gubernatorial candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger (search ), telling one potential voter at a campaign stop that "you shouldn't be governor unless you can pronounce the name of the state." And the Schwarzenegger campaign wants a formal apology. In his public remarks to about 300 members of the Los Angeles Ironworkers Local 433, Davis suggested Schwarzenegger -- whom he referred to only as "the actor" -- would repeal Davis-backed union gains such as daily overtime pay and family-leave benefits, reported the Sacramento Bee. "I've signed 300 bills to help working people," Davis said. "These are measures that strengthen your lives. Now my opponent, this actor, says 'I'm not going to ask for support from working people because they are a special interest.' He's got part of it right. You are special, and you have an important and special role to play in our future, and I am proud to stand with you." Whipped into an anti-Schwarzenegger frenzy at the picnic, one crowd member screamed, "He's a foreigner!" as Davis criticized the Austrian-born Terminator, who hopes to take over his seat in the Oct. 7 recall election. The man who made the foreigner comment later apologized to Davis for making the remark. Davis told him not to worry, the Bee reported, and added with a smile, "You shouldn't be governor unless you can pronounce the name of the state," in an apparent reference to Schwarzenegger's Austrian accent. Later at an Asian American rally against the recall in Alhambra, an appointee to the Workforce Investment Board suggested that Schwarzenegger's accent hindered his governing abilities. http://www.foxnews.com/printer_friendly_st...6,96662,00.html Of all the places where you slam immigrants, doing it in California isn't that wise. Granted, California, a spanish word, is probably not hard for Mexican immigrants to say. Still.. WTF?

Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2003 With the lack of a truly good candidate, I'm still betting he'll (barely) survive the recall.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2003 He might survive it. As far as acting childish. Well avoiding most of the debates and answering questions about the budget with answers like, "those two are the twin terminators" is a lot more childish than Gray Davis. Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2003 I've actually heard reports that he's pared the debt down to like 8 billion. This may or may not be a good thing, of course, due to the destruction of civil service jobs and whatnot.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2003 Oh come on, there's far better slams against Arnold than that. That magazine interview, for one. He keeps changing his story, saying at first "Oh, I lived very differently in the 70s and it was a very weird time and blah blah blah" and now he says "Interview? What interview?" I still do not understand the controversy over that article. I mean, this is CALIFORNIA, we're talking about. It's not as if deviant sexual practices are unheard of there - or even reviled. Guest JMA Report post Posted September 8, 2003 Wait, a Democrat is telling an actor to stay out of politics? Is this the Bizzaro World? And who cares if Arnold is a foreigner?

NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2003 Well you'd think conservatives would consider Mcklintock(sp?) a good candidate. I mean he has everything the "standard conservative" wants, however it seems the mainstream republican party is backing Arnold because just the way it has been for quite some time now, the priority is WINNING, and everything else comes second. In CA, that's how it has to be. Hell, I'd vote for Ueberroth if I thought he had a chance.
Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2003 Tyler, a question about your avatar/sig. Don't you have to vote Yes on the recall in order to vote Yes for Bustamante? Apparently not. It's just the trendy thing for liberals to support right now, so it's my avatar for another few weeks.
Guest Just Looking Report post Posted September 8, 2003 Tyler, a question about your avatar/sig. Don't you have to vote Yes on the recall in order to vote Yes for Bustamante? There aretwo parts to the recall. Question 1: Do you want to recall Davis? Question 2: If Davis is recalled, who should replace him? So you can vote no, and Bustamante, and it would work out. It's really a matter of who has the best shot at winning. In California a conservative like McKlintock doesn't stand that great a chance of winning. With so many hispanics in California, you'd have to think Bustamante would have the edge over Arnold. The key for him is whether or not enough hispanics go to the polls and vote. It's just the trendy thing for liberals to support right now, so it's my avatar for another few weeks. I understand that, but I'm confused on your position here. Do you want Davis or Bustamante to win? Also if Davis is so extremely unpopular, why don't the Dems just ditch him and put their full support behind the more likeable Bustamante? I should add that the Federal Liberals in Canada did just that, by forcing the hated Jean Chretien into retirement in favour of Paul Martin and the party has gained some significant support for doing so. Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2003 Personally, I'd just rather have a democrat in office for obvious reasons: with a democratic governor, it makes it much easier to campaign for president. I think the "No To Recall, Yes To Bustamante" route is basically a big CYA for democrats. It allows them to not split their tickets; this is an option that the republicans currently don't have. However, I'd probably... eh, I'd probably prefer Bustamante, since he *seems* (note: I don't know if it's true or not) to be more of an innocent than Davis, but then again, I think both of them would do a better job than Arnold.
