So apparently the league feels that because they've been doing it the right way for all these years since the advent of color television (except that 75th season deal), they need to throw off everybody by having the white sweaters away and the dark sweaters at home.

First of all, this is going to be just visually disconcerting for people such as myself who associate the colored sweaters with being away. The red Blackhawks sweater won't look right in Chicago. Secondly, this makes things wacky for dual-logo teams, as now the Senators are wearing their alternate logo at home, and the Maple Leafs have their logo inverted and thus weird-looking at home.

Apparently the reasoning behind this has something to do with that familiar plague of the NHL, the third jersey. I don't know exactly how, but apparently now these damned things will screw up tradition in addition to just being ugly.

So, now add this to Gary Bettman's hit list, along with renaming the divisions to resemble the NBA, realigning the playoff structure, overexpanding the league, killing off the WHA teams, and so much more. Man, Dennis Miller really had it down back in 1994 when he pegged Bettman as "some sort of Napoleonic creep."

*likes the idea*

Meh, it's not a GREAT idea...

Senators need new sweaters I think. I don't like their current ones.

My idea is to take the alternate one with the gold laurel-leaf stripes, and have a white one of that for home and a black one away, both with the regular 2-D logo.

I like the home and away sweaters. I like how they kept This on the white sweater. It would look bad on the away sweater.

I like This logo a bit more than the other one.

Are you suggesting they do This logo as the main one, instead of being a shoulder patch on the alternate sweaters?

No, Max: Use the top logo there on the third one here: Senators3.gif

So the alternate there would be an away and then change the black to white for home. Or away now that Bettman done fucked it all up. Then for a third one, now that you mention it, sure, slap the tower-leaf thing on there.

I guess I'm a Sens fan, even if I pronounce the city wrong: I say "Aht-uh-wuh," like the city in Illinois, instead of "Awt-uh-wah" like the Canadian people say it.

So you want them to adopt the black jersey for their new home jersey?

Ugh. The black Sens jerseys are nasty looking. I'd keep the red for home, keep the same center patch, and make the white as the away, with the same center patch.

The less changes with the Ottawa unis, the better, IMO.

The red ones suck! The 3-D head is bad, and those weird white things look stupid. I do like the typeface on the names though.

The blacks Sens sweaters are awesome, much better than the red/white ones. (except I don't like the gold so much, there's too much of that). If they weren't the Sens, I'd wear one.

well Montreal doesn't have a problem with a third jersey.

But still White should be home.

They have one in NHL 2003. It's white with a red stripe. I tihnk they made it up.

Actually the jersey you are referencing is one with reverse colors from the road jersey. It's a large blue stripe in the middle. Basically, it is the same as the road jersey, with just the red and white reversed. This is an actual jersey that they wore in the mid 1940's.

As for the home/away thing, this is old news. No matter what spin they put on it, it has to do with merchandising. Almost all road jerseys (and third jerseys) are better looking then plain white ones and therefore have more merchandise appeal. It is hoped, that wearing these jerseys at home will give them added exposure to the hometown fans (they don't have TV's?) and create more sales.

The reason that this sucks is that if someone goes to all home games, there won't be any variety in the colors that they see. For example, if I went to all Bruins games, I'd see Black on the Bruins, White on 95% of the visitors, and the occasional Yellow when the B's wear those God-awful 3rd sweaters.

That's true. It's all about the money. Funny enough though, the Leafs third jersey is white.

Another thing to think about is that originally the dark jerseys WERE home jerseys, so this could be seen as righting a wrong.

Does this mean 41 games with the godawful flaming horse jersey for Calgary?  If so, I'll be greatly annoyed.

Nope, there's a new red home jersey being unveiled on the 11th.

Firstly, there is a new Calgary Flames Jersey again?

And those were HORSES on the front of the black jerseys? I thought they were like a Dragon.

Hell, didn't they do this anyways during the 75th anniversary year. I can't remember if it was every team every game or if it was sometimes. Maybe just when the original six teams played each other they would wear dark homes and white aways. And they also had the cool original six retro jerseys that year.

I believe the 2nd half of that season they switched up the home and away jerseys

To show that not all of the NHL's ideas are horrible, they're having about half a dozen teams wear old-school, throwback jerseys this year. It's all marketing, rather than actually honoring the league's history, but if it encourages people to think the NHL is cool, I'm all for it. Plus, the Devils are going to wear the old Colorado Rockies sweater, which I think is a pretty dope looking uniform.

Still, Bettman sucks.

Shouldn't they wear the Kansas City Scouts sweaters instead?

And what does Dallas wear? Cleveland Barons? California Golden Seals?

And does this signal the return of the Golden "V" sweater in Vancouver, or the Stick/Rink "C"?

I'd say that they should probably wear the old North Stars' uniform when they're playing the Wild in Minnesota, but I'm not sure if that's such a good idea.

And I hope if the Leafs are one of these teams, then it's just the current 3rd jersey, and not their boring looking one from the 80s.

The reasoning that hometown fans should be exposed to the dark and alternate sweaters is flimsy at best. Actually, more often than not, the white sweaters look equal to or better than the dark sweaters in terms of aesthetic value. Cases in point: Calgary, Colorado, Toronto, Philadelphia, and Detroit. Their visitor counterparts either lack contrast, look bland, or just bad. I don't understand how this gives more exposure to the non-white sweaters. If I, a Blackhawks fan, decide to go to my local sporting-goods store to buy a hideously overpriced hockey sweater, I, as a fan, am aware of the three colors available: white, red, or black. If the colors are in fact inverted, I will not go "Hey! Wow! I didn't know they had red ones! I thought they just ahd those boring white ones. I'll pay $80 for that, no question!"No. Fans know what colors their team wear. They're not adding exposure.

This isn't going to accomplish anything.
