The One and Only Angel Season 5 Thread

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure that when the reruns were originally announced, they were supposed to be at 5 and 11.

*shrug* I dunno.

I sort of remember them saying that, but right now TNT has Law & Order listed.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT READ THIS!!!!!!!! (Eps. 1 and 2 details.)

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

Just got my grubby little hands on the work prints for season 5 of ANGEL, episodes 1 and 2, and thought I'd share a quick review and a list of spoilers.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Well, kids....it's all been worth the wait. Ever since BUFFY and FIREFLY bit the collective big one, it seems that every decent writer has made his/her way over to the ANGEL franchise, and season 5 starts off with a two-episode bang that will not only please current fans, but will hopefully lure some new ones in en masse... In other words, the writing, pacing, and initial storyline kicks major ass. We start Season five with Angel rescuing a lovely blonde in a dark alley (they always seem to end up there...along with a vampire), only to become surrounded by a dozen armed men...which turn out to be his very own employees (much to the dark one's surprise). Lawyers advance on the rescuee, ask her to sign some release forms, and even force her to pose with her rescuer, much to his chagrin. ("We help...the...um...helpless?") We cut back to the rest of the gang. Fred and Wesley seem a bit overwhelmed by the whole deal (aka: becoming the heads of Wolfram and Hart), while Gunn comes across as thrilled with the office space (and Lorne equally thrilled by the new Hollywood connections). Angel receives a visit from a cute new assistant who seems to know a whole lot more than she lets on...after all, she works directly UNDER the senior partners...but that's all she'll say. Soon enough, the plot thickens...with a W and H client showing up and demanding that Angel and Co. get him off the hook for some seriously evil crimes. It's either that, or the bastard will unleash a devastating virus on L.A. that he just happens to have stored in his own son (Angel finds this out by interrogating "Spanky", who gets his nickname from a somewhat kinky practice that Angel takes a swat at). Oh, and did I mention that Angel's secretary happens to be named Harmony? And that she happens to be a vampire that used to attend Sunnydale High??? Some of the funniest moments will come from Angel's interaction with the always superficial (and undead) blonde, especially from her reaction to news of the unseen Cordelia's coma. Fred is seen taking charge at the lab, while Gunn is taken into a lab for a new "suit"...as Angel has to fight off his own military unit (which has taken the initiative to kill the child carrying the virus, as well as his classroom and any witnesses). This leads to a small speech about "mercy and evil", and one of the coolest physical kicks Angel has ever delivered (let's just say a human head goes BOOM). The evil client, however, looks like he's about to lose his case, when out of the blue he's saved by Gunn, who's new "suit" is actually a brain implant that has fed him every scrap of human/demon law ever developed. Within seconds, Gunn has the case thrown out, and the threat is dead. The moral problem that arises from the gang's realization that the majority of their own clients are pure evil, however, is not ignored. A package arrives mailed to ANGEL...c/o Wolfram and Hart. Angel opens it with the gang witnessing the event, releasing a medallion on a necklace that releases another fellow vampire....Spike, AKA William the Bloody. The gang stares in stunned silence, as Harmony jumps in and yells out "Blondie Bear??" to her former lover. END of episode ONE Episode TWO: Picking up where we left off, Angel and Wesley have to explain who the hell Spike is, as the bleached bloodsucker himself realizes that he's a ghost. In other words, he can't touch anyone or anything, and keeps disappearing into nothingness ("Oh balls..." is Spike's best reaction). He reminds Angel of Buffy (who is now in Europe, and who we see in a flashback near the beginning), and of the fact that HE was originally supposed to wear said amulet. This brings up an interesting point: Why did W and H give Angel the amulet to begin with? Were they hoping he'd die instead of Spike? Spike haunts Angel, in his own way, by taunting him endlessly...cluing the others in to the fact that Angel's not the only vamp out there with a soul anymore. A lawyer is told by Angel to cancel dealings with a grave-robbing necromancer, and is then returned to Wolfram and Hart in several bloody buckets ("bucket o' lawyer"). Angel visits the Necro, along with a tag-along Spike, and threatens to freeze the bad guy's accounts. Spike strikes a deal with the Necro, and tricks Angel into a trap. The deal is simple: Angel's soul goes POOF and Spike's essence ends up in Angel's body. Needless to say, Spike turns on the Necro and ends up possessing his body, allowing Angel to sever the evil one's head (but not before delivering a few blows of his own). Angel starts to trust Spike, who is still a floating spirit that ends up asking Fred for help. You see...every time Spike fades he sees where his soul is going, and it's not the place where heroes go. It's hell. fade to black. Season Five's writing, action, and crisp dialogue is as good as it gets, and it's awesome to see the gang a little more at ease, despite the consequences surrounding their leadership of W and H. I can't wait to see where it all goes, and I'm pretty sure I won't be disappointed by the future of this bad-as-hell series.

Oh, and rumour has it that Buffy, Willow, and ANFUCKINGDREW~! will be in this season.

In the dark?  Oh dear Mole...

I'd rather watch it not knowing what's going to happen. So I'd like to stay in the dark.

Word to that. I have always avoided spoilers. I hate knowing what is going to happen. The trailer and preview on the WB website is about all I check out before an episode airs.

I was hoping for a better preview on AOL TV, but they gave me a crappy one.

Blondie bear! Ahahahaha!

Good stuff. Keeping up a lot of the excellent fight choreography and cinematography we saw last year. Holden the vampire lives on in Knox form! Harmony is hilarious, Gunn is incredibly interesting, and the new girl Eve is...well, kinda dull so far, but hot in a "I just turned 18!" way. Still wish it was Lilah, but I'll settle.

I found that to be quite a good premiere.

Angel blasting that dude's head off with the shotgun was unexpected and badass.

Cool little tidbit I took note of: the score in the first scene was the same music theme used in the first Angel episode.

I already hate Eve. She's trying way the fuck too hard to be Lilah. Just bring back Lilah instead. Hard to believe that was a Joss episode, since it was COMPLETELY FUCKING FILLER.

oh, and:

"I have no problem spanking men" - The line that launched a thousand fan fictions.

Get used to it fazzle, this is what the whole season is going to be like. The big story arc isn't going to be a big bad, but the fact that Angel Inc is using evil to fight evil.

It was a great episode, everything just flowed together. I loved how the first scene in Hart was all on shot, just shows how good of a director Joss has become.

I'll comment more later, but I'm going out.

During the transition to the next scene (when they usually do the shots of LA and whatnot) after Gunn first appeared, they showed the panther, and then during the one after Angel killed the dude, they showed Eve looking at the blood on the wall. I thought that was pretty cool.

Yeeeah, and a little disturbing, too. I'm surprised it was such a throwaway moment; it's not really his policy to kill humans even if they are evil. Perhaps that's what they'll have to do with Wolfram and Hart to make it work, buuut...still a bit sketch.

Admittedly, it was awesome. And I suppose that Hauser or whatever his name was pulled the trigger on his own - he just wasn't really expecting the barrel to end up right under his chin.

It wasn't that it was a standalone that bothered me, it's that they didn't even attempt to have any sort of point until halfway through the damn episode. Then the half they dedicated to the case was just lame "Hey! Did you know Wolfram and Hart is evil? Cause they are! Evil, that is, incase you needed another reminder." Just hope it's not that way every week.

I am disappointed my "In the Dark" comment to *Mole* wasn't picked up on...

1. I actually dug Harmony in this - shades of the old Cordy from season 1. I didn't think I would enjoy it, but I did. Yay for me.

2. The Kick/GunShot had me markin. A lot of things had me markin in this eps. Angel needs to start doing a vandaminator-esque move where he throws a shotgun at someone, they catch it, and he kicks and their heads blowup...

3. I didn't think I would like Big Lawyer-type Gunn, but it actually works pretty well.

4. Knox was more enjoyable in the Finale... Fred was annoying here... I understand the whole "buckling down" deal, but it just wasn't as fun as it was last season.

5. Eve is on the bubble right now... No Lilah, but she has a bit of the ~Lilah Walk~.

6. That Frye dude... man, that guy was just sleazy... they should really bring him back sometime.

7. I was nervous going into this season, as I didn't think the whole gimmick and new characters would really work - but this episode helped sorta calm those fears. A lot of really neat stuff in it, there's a lot of potential here, they really should bring back the beast, the balance between G&E is really interesting and a lot of the points made were actually believable for keeping WR&H around, Eve is also on the bubble in terms of hotness -she may grow on me, she may not- no Cordy = Good, I kinda missed the other characters introduced in the finale - like that dude from Van Wilder - or the other watcher but I guess that they can expand on that later, the fight scenes were a bit too chopfooey for me esp. the first one but there was some neat stuff done like the wall walk...

8. I will have to see the interaction between Angel and Spike before I make some noise about his return.

9. HEY! No brooding Connor~!

10. Angel getting his happy-on over the cars had me on the floor. I love lil things like that.

Oh, I picked up on it. Just didn't want to give you the satisfaction. Ahahahaha!

Further thoughts: I think the more stand-alone nature this season is supposed to fall into will work pretty damn well, even if there is no epic story to push it along. The chemistry of all the major characters in their new roles, plus the surprise addition of Harm and now Spike's return...there's really enough to explore there situationally without even having to worry about the huge story arcs.

I'm also kind of glad that Spike is going to be back in the mix immediately. It would have been cool to have a big, dramatic build-up for him, but we all know he's going to be on the show and we're all dying to see how the interactions play out. May as well get us in the door right away.

I loved this episode. It looks like quite the fun season ahead of us and I mark out for Spike/Angel interactions.

But who sent the medallion to W&H??

EDIT: Yes Harmony is a vamp. She referred to it in this episode.
