25 most overrated games of all time

Recommended Posts

Battletoads doesn't deserve to be on this list. A fantastic, fun game which I like to play for a challenge ever once in a while.

About the Penny Arcade comic--or rather the page discussing their viewpoint: overrated doesn't make a game bad. Neither does expressing an opinion in comic strip form make you right.

Many of the games listed had a lot of influence. So? That doesn't mean that the games themselves were great or even good. Some, quality-wise, were only average or crap.

Except for the presentation, graphics, etc--FFVII was no better than FFVI. When you have legions of fans voting or cheating to vote characters from those games over games that were the cornerstones of gaming for a decade + and still pumping out hi-quality entries, there's a problem.

Thank you. Most of the "secrets" in FFVII were along the same lines as those prior in the series, thus little originality. It added, gameplay-wise...uh...running without speed shoes and Limit Breaks. Whoopie. Materia took away much of the unique play mechanics, too.

FFVII reduced the number of party members in total and allowable in the party at once. Most of the FFVI character were more well-developed than most of the FFVII cast (of course, dunno about Vincent, since he and Yuffie kinda count as "hidden" characters a la Umaro and GoGo).

However, elements that should have stayed the same were axed. I was psyched to hear that Tifa used Blitz techniques...until I discovered that the beloved fighting game commands used in FFVI for Sabin was turned into an f'n SLOT MACHINE!! As a fellow fighting game fan, even you must conceed that's lame, Sakura.

Gameplay-wise, VII didn't break any new ground. However, aside from the cinematic presentation, the Final Fantasy games never broke any new ground for RPGs--they just got credit for it because they became so big.

Oh...maybe Chocobo raising counts as...wait a minute--that WAS a unique gameplay facet, wasn't it?

Once True Crime is released, if it adds up like I think it will, most people will start to realize GTA is overrated.

Not if it's ANYTHING like the demo.

If it's like the demo, it'll be one big pile of overhyped bullshit.

Starfleet Command? Overrated? All the reviews I've seen are like 7 to maybe 8 on the outside for the first one and 4-6 for the second as it was crap.

Starfleet Command is just a bitch because of how much stuff you need to manage at one time.

Bunch of pussies.

One omission that I was hoping would be in there, although I dunno if anyone else will remember it...Rise Of The Robots. Anyone else remember that? 3D-rendered robot fighting game that was pimped up in UK games magazines for what seemed like DECADES, got a big prestigious multi-format release, and the game was FUCKING DREADFUL. Sub-Shaq-Fu dreadful.

Seriously. Download the Megadrive/SNES version, or the Amiga version, or the Jaguar version, or any other version, and witness the over-rated hyped-up crapfest that is ROTR.

While we're on the subject of video games, Flik, what's the name of the game your Avatar character is in? I can't remember...

My new avatar is Felicia of Darkstalkers.

Super Puzzle fighter II turbo if you want to be really technical ;)

Ah yes...1 player can only use blue robo-dude in any of the modes of play, he's got only a couple of moves, control sucks...

The ads were just GREAT! Elipses-ridden quotes from game mags all praising the graphics.

I seem to recall a sequel coming out (that curiously, wasn't called RotR2), but it was almost as bad.

I don't care about how much ground it broke, FF VII is still the best game ever. I don't care about Tifa's slots either, I use Cloud, Cait Sith and Cid. Edgar owns Sabin, btw.

The sequel to ROTR is "Rise II: Resurrection".

I wouldn't go as far as calling it the best game ever. Hell it's not even the best RPG ever. But it was a good game.

Best RPG ever IMO has to go to Chrono Trigger. If it had a better story it would be a candidate for best game ever.

That, I agree with.

Chrono Trigger had the right balance of everything. Funny, serious, good gameplay, replayable value, lots of secrets (I didn't know about the stuff on Magus's cronies or the secret stash of ultimate Magus equipment till about like 6 months later), and just a very entertaining story.

Sakura never ceases to amaze me with some of the bull she comes up with. Except for graphics/sound, it's not even better than FFVI on most counts.

Even so, that's your opinion, Sakura. One you've failed to even give justification for.

Edgar's tools quickly lose their usefulness, more so than the Blitz techniques do.

Trigger owns, too. New Game + is my favorite RPG feature ever...

WP-I loved the game music so much that I have the actual music pieces on CD. It's either this or Final Fantasy IV for best RPG music ever. It was a pretty good challenge as well. I had some very memorable fights taking up close to an hour of playing time which I absolutely savoured. (The optional boss under the earth? and the final boss)

It's a fighting game. A "beat 'em up" is, more or less, a game like Final Fight (which I miss sorely), Double Dragon, or that AWESOME Aliens Vs. Predator arcade game (of course, my love for it mostly comes from it following story arcs from the Aliens and Predator graphic novels that I used to read constantly).

One you've failed to even give justification for.

How am I supposed to "justify" it? You think VI has a better story. I don't. What more is there to say?

EVERYTHING about VII owns. Story, cast, villains, music, battle system. It is all great. If you don't think so, nothing I can say can "justify" it.

Maybe he's just mad at the way you present your opinions. Maybe that's why he(and I) are always on your case.

You always present your opinions as fact and usually respond to opinions opposite to yours in a rude manner. Maybe you don't mean to but that's how you are.

I dunno...am I hitting the nail here Andrew?

Yeah, pretty much. Saying "this is the best" because a certain game is popular or some critics say so isn't good enough for me. If you can can convince me of it then please try.

I do rag on Sakura a bit, but it's all in jest really. I never intended on hurting her feelings or anything, but we disagee 90% of the time and I at least try to give reasons when we BUTT heads over a certain difference of opinion.

As stated previously, most people familiar with RPG series outside of the Final Fantasy series state that FFVII isn't even the best RPG, let alone best game ever. For example, IN MY OPINION none of the FinFan games I've played can touch the Lunars. Yes, maybe without FFVII's huge success we may not have gotten the Lunar upgrades for Playstation, but that's a separate point and not a reason for me to bow down and worship the statues of Cloud and Sephiroth.

Say "I think..." or something similar and I have no problem with your OPINION though I may state my disagreement. Presenting it as fact or a ruling passed down from the Great Gaming Elders strikes me as unacceptable. A declaration without backup doesn't change anyone's mind.

Now, if you want to cite reasons for the story being better, I made another thread for that, although I do know and admit the FFVII translation is obviously superior to the translation of FFVI.

However, if you feel all the elements were "great" please try to elaborate on that in the other thread I made for the comparison, and support it with reasons.

Reread this thread. You say stuff without adding "I think" or "in my opinion" several times in it. In fact you even hate on FF VII without saying that. Everyone does this. It goes without saying when I say FF VII rules that I'm talking about myself. Unless there IS Great Gaming Elders(who would surely declare VII to be the best).

I would never say VII is the best because of critics. I think MK3 owns MK II. I think KI 2 owns KI. I think Tekken 4 owns VF4. I am not one to like something because of the press.

Damaramu, you freaked out because KOR and myself don't mark out for Link and provided reasons for hating the GC pad. How can you get on my case over not accepting other opinions!?

I don't see why you would think this. I don't care if anyone likes FF IV the most. I don't care if someone likes Quest 64 the most. If anything I've got shit here for liking Squall and other stuff.

I will give you reasons VII rules the world in the FF thread.

Oh maybe it was the fact that you were saying that the fact that the other pads are better is a fact and not an opinion and also saying anyone who bought the game for Link isn't a "real" gamer as if there's some sort of rite of passage one must go through before they can play video games for "real".

Actually the "real gamer" phrase was first introduced to the argument by DVD Spree in saying how we weren't real gamers because we didn't mark for Link, but whatever.

Anyway, from browsing various Nintendo websites, the people that bought the game for Link are now "done" with it because they beat ultra hard/WMM, so my argument stands that most people who bought the game for Link are just Nintendo marks and not fighting game fans, meh. We justified our arguments at the time, you just freaked out because you didn't like them.

Yeah, I'll even admit those are my opinions. However, when I make broad, sweeping statements like "best ____ game ever" I'll usually put that disclaimer in it. You tend not to.

In fact you even hate on FF VII without saying that. Everyone does this. It goes without saying when I say FF VII rules that I'm talking about myself. Unless there IS Great Gaming Elders(who would surely declare VII to be the best).

Since I have a sense of humor I'll take that as a joke. Because someone calling FFVII the best game ever is extremely laughable to me.

I would never say VII is the best because of critics. I think MK3 owns MK II. I think KI 2 owns KI. I think Tekken 4 owns VF4. I am not one to like something because of the press.

Point well taken. I'd forgotten about that peculiarity. Just because FFVII so critically got sucked off by every magazine around doesn't mean that's where you get the opinion. However, on the points I've disagreed with you on, I have my reasons (hating the MK3 combo system, etc).

I don't see why you would think this. I don't care if anyone likes FF IV the most. I don't care if someone likes Quest 64 the most.

That's fine, but stating those games are the best ever is different than liking them the most.

If anything I've got shit here for liking Squall and other stuff.

You have my word that I would never do that. I didn't get far enough into the game due to my frustration with the Junction system to hate the characters in FFVIII. :)
