New Book Upsets Christians

Recommended Posts

Tyler - you're retarded.

I'm done with this thread.

If IRONY was a g-string in a strip club it would be full of dollar bills RIGHT NOW.

If irony was a Mike Tyson girlfriend, it would be punched in the face RIGHT NOW!!

That wasn't as good as the first one :P

Yeah, I wasted the Midget/strap-on one in a thread no one is going to read...

*sigh*

I saw the midget one, and would've complimented you on it, but couldn't think of a funny way to say it so I just left it. It was hilarious, believe me.

I too agree, that there is wayyyy too much anti-Christianity on the board at this point. It's ironic how they feel Christianity to be so prejudiced towards other people, yet the detractors are the ones who seem to be the most narrow-minded. Go figure.

I'm not anti-Christian. I'm equally full of hatred for all religions. Well, maybe moreso for Mormons and Scientologists, but you get the picture.

I believe in God, but organized religion is just a big bag of suck.

These detractors of this book (by which I mean "Jesus's Diary", not the Bible) should wise up to what's going on. I have high doubts that this guy wrote this book with any other intention than to cause controversy. And they have little case against, after all it's free speech.

I'm not going to get into an argument over religion on the internet. To much time is wasted and nothing gets done other than causing ill emotions. Personally, i find it egotistical for a person to bitch about how Cristianity is nothing but lies or that atheism is arrogant and then cover up by saying "prove it" or "I'm just having an open perspective". At least share your ideas and then listen to the other person. Geez.

Tyler, for I think the first time I totally agree with your argument, and think you did a great job composing yourself and winning this one. Good job, man.

(no, Im still not voting for Dean! :))

Religion or anti-religion? Whatever the fuck, I don't care. But, I think we can all agree Eagan gained the eternal upperhand as soon as he said 'Duck Season'.

Anyway, the book doesn't sound all that funny, but the sheep quote would have been brilliant had he quoted it accurately.

In less than 24 hours, over twice as many posts as the David Blaine thread, and three pages.

I swear there's something about Jesus Threads in Current Events that causes massive amounts of replies.

EDIT: I really have nothing to say about the book. The author doesn't sound like he's all there, but to quote James Carville, "I'm not going to be one of those right-wingers who stands around boycotting a movie they've never seen."

I doubt pot was around back then.

religion is bullshit

there isn't a reason NOT to parody it

Amen. These fundies sound like the book burning kind...

Hmm, if a book is offensive to blacks and blacks protest, few people praise the book for offending them.

If a book offends Jews and Jews complain, few bash Jews for complaining.

Why is it OK to piss off Christians? Why are Christians not allowed to express their displeasure with something without being called "book burners" and the like?

I'm done with this thread.

If you don't mind me asking, Eagan, what is it about somebody believing in the teachings of Jesus (and if you can find ANYTHING bad that Jesus EVER personally advocated in the Bible, let us all know) that upsets you so?

How 'bout this? Your mother regularly abused drugs.

My proof? Your present existence.

I suppose you'll just ignore that.

People misusing the word "irony" make baby Jesus cry.

I thought Jesus was no more real than Underdog. Some obnoxious, over-bearing, anti-religious jerk posted that on page 1 of this thread.

-=Mike

..Then again, that same person said he was done with this thread a page ago, so apparently anti-religious people are liars.

No...the jews and catholics are just as bad as the Christians. But all three pale in comparison to those mormon wackos. And hindu...well I have nothing against hindu.

So now Christians don't have to be lonely.

Why would I read a piece of work that in all likelyhood is just folktales and bullshit?

How 'bout this? Your mother regularly abused drugs.

My proof? Your present existence.

See, this is what I mean. Whenever you try to tell someone who's devout to their religion that their beliefs are *in all likelyhood* false, they spout bullshit like this "The Mike" guy.

It's a lose-lose situation since I can't prove the bible to be fiction.

But no one can prove it to be right, so why should anyone believe it?

If he wants to say he find it offensive, then hey sure.

But he's pulling out the word libel, which is a very strong claim when the characters involved all exist as a matter of faith. Also, libel implies that there was intentional attempt to ruin someone's good name. That part gets people confused and sends a lot of libel cases out of court.

...But, the part of Tyler's arguement I simply must disagree with is the strawman he's built:

Poster: Hey, maybe this guy's got a right to type this stuff.

Poster 2: I don't like it myself, but I don't think it's worthy of totally banning it.

Tyler: JESUS HATERS!

But no one can prove it to be right, so why should anyone believe it?

1) So --- your going to bash an entire belief system that you, by your own admission, know approximately jack about.

How 'bout this --- Monty Python originally intended for "Life of Brian" to be a parody of Jesus, but according to Eric Ide, there is absolutely nothing to satirize the teachings of Jesus about, as there is nothing bad there.

However, I find it funny that you'd put more stock in this book (which I will not read, so I won't comment on its quality --- or lack thereof) than in the Bible.

Anti-Christians are the most closed-minded people in the world.

2) If YOU are claiming that the Bible is "bullshit" --- it's up to YOU to provide the proof to back up YOUR allegations, not US to disprove it. I say it's true because many of the prophecies in it HAVE come true and MUCH of it have been historicall verified -- but Spider Poet would be an infinitely better person to discuss this intelligently with you --- if such a discussion with you is truly possible (which is a dubious assumption).

I at least provided SOME evidence on your mother's rampant drug abuse during pregnancy.

And it's just Mike, if you'd like. Quotes aren't needed.

I'm hardly a Bible thumper. I believe in the Bible and believe that Jesus is the perfect example of how people should live their lives. I come up short of his example regularly, but the pursuit of it is a noble and worthwhile goal.

I'm shocked that Tyler --- of all people --- is getting linked with book-banning fundies.

Tyler is right. Does the author provide ANYTHING resembling ANY evidence to back up ANY of the charges he makes? Does he provide ANY reason to write ANY of it?

And, Tyler is hardly the only person to notice a very noticeable anti-Christian sentiment on this board. He's also hardly alone to notice that many of the anti-Christian types on this board (names shan't be mentioned --- if you THINK it's you, you probably think it for a reason) are closed-minded and quite offensive about it.

-=Mike

...What about those who are saying that Tyler stating that the book is probably libelous equates him as being a "book-burning fundie"? I'm not Tyler's biggest fan here, but good lord, that is ridiculous.

The book is mocking religion. I'm not endorsing it, I'm just saying it's funny in concept.

Anti-Christians are the most closed-minded people in the world.

No, I'm open-minded enough to see that billions of people over time have been led to believe in many different faiths, not one of them correct in any way shape or form. You are a sheep.

If YOU are claiming that the Bible is "bullshit" --- it's up to YOU to provide the proof to back up YOUR allegations, not US to disprove it.

Um, it's not up to me to prove anything. I believe religion is bullshit.

I at least provided SOME evidence on your mother's rampant drug abuse during pregnancy.

I'm not linking him with fundies, I'm linking him with idiots who build straw men.

This is like if we saw a documentary movie re-enacting a real life event, and Morgan Freeman plays the President. I say, "Gee, I don't remember any black Presidents" and then you tell me "YOU DON'T THINK A BLACK MAN SHOULD BE PRESIDENT! YOU ARE SUCH A RACIST!"

That is called a straw man. You are twisting the arguement's view to try and make the person making the arguement look bad.

Tyler is right. Does the author provide ANYTHING resembling ANY evidence to back up ANY of the charges he makes? Does he provide ANY reason to write ANY of it?

Is the book classified as non-fiction and I didn't know it or something?

He's also hardly alone to notice that many of the anti-Christian types on this board (names shan't be mentioned --- if you THINK it's you, you probably think it for a reason) are closed-minded and quite offensive about it.

I don't hate Christians, I have a dislike for people who try to preach it for me, and use the Bible to teach hate and violence which I don't think should be it's true purpose. Never have I disliked someone soley because they believe in God.

...What about those who are saying that Tyler stating that the book is probably libelous equates him as being a "book-burning fundie"? I'm not Tyler's biggest fan here, but good lord, that is ridiculous.

Believe what you want to believe. You know the truth.

1) You're saying that Christians basically have no right to be upset about it. The book is insulting to one of the few people in history who was completely good. Heck, the ONLY person who nobody can say actually did anything bad.

2) Ah, THAT is being open-minded? Might want to crack open that dictionary of yours, Sparky.

3) If YOU are stating it's the case, it's up to YOU to back it up. Simple logic there. If you can't, then don't make the allegation.

4) Not shooting for maturity, thankfully.

5) Yes, I do know the truth. And I feel for you and your intense desire to deny it. But, it's your life to lead.

When in the hell did I say that?

1) A MORE apt analogy would be if a movie came out that said that FDR ABSOLUTELY knew that the Japanese would bomb Pearl Harbor and that he let it happen because he "wanted to see them all die" (replace FDR with Bush and Pearl Harbor with 9/11 if you'd like).

I --- or Tyler --- would state that the premise is quite offensive and libelous.

I --- or Tyler --- would then be accused of trying to ban the movie from playing in theatres and doing untold damage to the First Amendment.

You are creating arguments that weren't made in the first place to play the role of martyr.

2) Even if it's classified as "fiction", if it attacks a real person with no real justification for it, it STILL can be nailed as being libelous.

3) I have seen enough people here call those who believe "sheep" and basically lump ALL Christians with the hardcore fundies out there.

4) I didn't say YOU said that.

Ok, honestly, how on earth can people be upset with Christians being mad at this book?

It's a book that was written, apparantly, to make fun of Jesus. They have EVERY RIGHT to be mad at the author of this book.

I mean, hell, if someone wrote a book that said the prophet Mohammed was a complete loon who liked to suck camel cock for kicks, they'd probably be shot by now (No offensive to any Muslims or anything, but that was the best example I could come up with off the top of my head).

I honestly don't see how people can say "It's just those damned book burners" when it's a book making fun of their entire religon.

Also, kinda on topic - is pot a new world or an old world plant? Something makes me want to say that it's a new world plant, but I'm not sure...
