The One and Only Dance Dance Revolution thread

Recommended Posts

I've always liked DDR because, all jokes about us white people sucking aside, it's always been easy to pick up and play. It's simple, and it's physical...I've used it in lieu of an exercise routine before. I just wished I had access to it on a regular basis (I can't afford to pay for it at the local arcade; I actually bought an adapter/pads for my hax0red DWI w/ 500+ songs, but not only are my pads shit, but I can't play anyway because I don't want to piss off my downstairs neighbors). I can still do most songs on Trick/Standard, but I've lost all sense of stamina...sweating after just one song, and feeling terrible thirst and even occasionally cramps after a measly 3-song set.

Seconding that. Bought two pads and an adaptor for my DWI, going half with a friend for Ultramix on his seX-Box, and stuck at Trick level.

Of course, I don't have the room in my dorm to play DWI with the pads this year, not without some serious rearranging. And while the local arcade still has Extreme (I think?), it's a matter of getting a ride down there, and my friends aren't as into the game as I am.

That and it's tough playing DDR being a hoss. I do decent enough, but the Max songs pwn my ass.

Course, I still have my third place in a freestyle comp by diving off of the pads, over the bar, and through a steel coffin to my name.

Extreme WAS indeed supposed to be the last mix. However, DDR Party Mix, which is like bets hits 2, is hitting Japan soon. So is Extreme Console Version. Europe has Dancing Stage Unleashed, and US has Ultramix, both for Xbox. Ultramix is a must buy JUST for Castles in the Sky by Ian Van Dahl, one of the greatest trance hits of all time.

And I'm willing to bet there will be more DDR, but I hope Konami of America releases Beatmania before DDR Extreme US.

Christ, KoA is releasing an American version of Keyboardmania before Beatmania. That's not a knock on Keyboardmania, but it's remarkable that Konami is making an American version of one of the more obscure Bemani games before one of the most well known, which even had an American arcade version (HipHopMania).

Diaries of a DDR Novice:

My school arcade just switched the 3rd Mix Machine with DDRMax2 about a week ago. I'm going through about 2-3 dollars a day of it, picking two songs I know I can do and a random harder one for the third. That way once I find a harder one I can do, I swap it out with one of the "two I can do" and go higher. Hardest I've done so far is... I think it's called "Era" or something, on standard. I want to know who decided to put in that speed-change and their street address, because they need an ass kicking. :P

I tried Era on Heavy, just for kicks, and made it about halfway through before I collapsed and couldn't finish.

Thanks to Thoth and ELM for helping me pick out pads and PS/PS2 versions to look into - my birthday's Novemeber 2nd, so hopefully I can stop spending 15 bucks a week on it soon. I'm dissapointed, though, cause I looked at the PS2 song list and "Candy" isn't in there - it was one of the first I actually managed to beat when I started MAX2... ah well.

Candy (Star) or Candy (Heart)? Candy (Star) is on DDR Max for Ps2

You're welcome. And yeah, it is Era. :D

Have you started getting into the easier Heavy songs yet? If so, I could reccommend a couple for you to try.

I've dabbled in Heavy, but I fail miserably every time. Feel free to recommend the lowest of the low-end.

I have no idea which Candy is the one I play, but PS2 DDRMax2, from what I've read, contains no song named Candy.

Is it odd that I'm actually starting to like the music? Or is that just one of the unavoidable side effects? :P

EDIT: How different are the song lists for Max and Max 2 on PS2? Varied enough to own both?

Here we are...

Brilliant2U

Fantasy (By Lockout, NOT Melissa. Trying Melissa's will put you in a World of Hurt.)

Higher

Let The Beat Hit 'Em

Let's Groove

You should be able to pass at least a few of those. :D

Liking the music is a side-effect. When I first started, I rarely listened to DDR music outside of the arcade. But, as it is now, my MP3s are mainly (85%) comprised of Bemani tracks.

There is a good bit of difference between MAX and MAX 2, so if you want a good variety of tracks, hold onto MAX.

DDRMAX and DDRMAX2 share about 11 or 12 songs or so. The songlist is different enought that you could pick up both, eventually. Start with MAX2, though, I think. MAX has songs that you seem to like, like era.

Which Candy do you like? Candy (Star) or Candy (Heart)? Heart has the vocals.

"Heart" has vocals? Then the one I'm referring to is "Star".

Sounds like you may need to get your PS2 modded and then get the import version of Max2 to have Candy (Heart).

WOOOOOO! I just full comboed After the Game of Love on Heavy!

(hears the crowd say "Pfft...it's only a five step song..." in unison)

Dammit, I should've taken a picture because I NEVER EVER EVER full combo a song. EVER! AT ALL! NOT EVEN ON BEGINNER BECAUSE I SUCK AT P.A.'ing!

Oh and 4th Mix Plus, Wonderland, basic doubles: sheer bliss.

Ordered the pad and Max2, now I just have to wait a month with them sitting in a closet. So... close... *drools*

Let's Groove and Let The Beat Hit 'Em on heavy were good recommendations - I can't say I had anything resembling style or grace in playing them, but I at least managed to pass them. Brilliant2U, on the other hand, kicked my ass. Then it stole a dollar from me and kicked my ass twice more.

If you're just starting heavy right now, I'd recommend Holic, Era, and Freckles.

Mostly gonna be doing hops here and there for my routine. I'll post a link to my video(if any) if anyone has a digital camcorder there.

So far I'm up to 9-step songs as my limit (can't do all of 'em, though). I love this game and play reguarly whenever I get the chance (on an Extreme arcade machine, of course).

Favorite songs (i.e. the ones I constantly play):

Orion (the Ameuro Mix, i.e. the original one)

Can't Stop Falling in Love (Speed Mix)

Still in My Heart (Momo Mix)

Colors for Extreme

Legend of Max (on Standard, can't do it on Heavy yet obviously)

Sakura (on Oni, can't do it on Heavy yet obviously)

Daikenkai (LOVE THIS SONG)

Sychronized Love

That's all the ones that come up at the top of my head, tired, but yeah.

-Duo

No one had a digital camcorder!! My routine for True (Trance Sunrise Mix) came out ok. Nothing special though.

Is DDR Extreme worth importing? I've been playing Max2 like crazy for the past month, and love it. Seems like a much better mix than Max to me, but I really started to come into my own as a player with Max2, so perhaps I should go back and play Max now that I can do a lot better (highest passed was an 8 footer). Does Extreme have Boom Boom Dollar or Butterfly? Those are two of my arcade favorites but alas I don't have them for home. If not, could anyone recommend a Japanese mix that would have them?

Butterfly and Boom Boom Dollar aren't in DDREx. You'd probably have to go back to one of the old 30 FPS PS1 mixes to find them. I'm guessing third mix, but I'm not totally sure.

DDREx, though, is absolutely worth importing. It's easily the best home mix ever, with 111 songs and imo a much higher average song quality than virtually any other mix. The new stuff is incredible, it's got a great collection of old stuff, it is, for me, the perfect mix. It's pretty much the only one I ever play now, except to occasionally play Max2 USA just for So Deep.
