cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2003 Here's a funny story about Scarface. I was in Suncoast one time in the DVD section, and one of the employees discussed various titles with me. He said something to the extent of "Sometimes DVDs go out of print, like the ORIGINAL Scarface with Al Pacino." I honestly wanted to just verbally tear that guy apart. Incidentally, what is with all the love for the Pacino remake? It's just Brian DePalma doing his usual ripping off of better directors (usually Hitchcock, in this case Howard Hawks). Guest El Satanico Report post Posted September 30, 2003 I'm sure the clerk wasn't announcing Pacino's Scarface to be "the original film", because he'd have no reason to declare that. The only other scarface is clearly older. Since you two were discussing OPP DVDs, I'm sure he just meant it as in the original DVD release.

Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 1, 2003 So is the collector's set worth $45?
BlackFlagg 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2003 Just picked up my copy, last one they had It's worth the money, IMo...especially since ya get the original Scarface which isn't available on DVD in any other way. So the $45-$50 that it costs is worth it for the two movies alone as that's about what it'd probably cost if ya got em seperately(which ya can't do anyway because the original Scarface isn't available, heh)
Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2003 hell yeah it's worth the $45. The money clip is ironic since I spent all my money just to get the damn thing (that counts as irony, right?)
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2003 I haven't seen either, but I'm assuming the original is universally preferred by those that have seen both?
JasonX 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2003 I haven't seen either, but I'm assuming the original is universally preferred by those that have seen both? The Pacino version is by far the most beloved Scarface movie. The original Scarface film is one of those old-school movies that only die-hard, old school movie fans love.....
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2003 That's why I said for those who have seen BOTH. Obviously the newer is loved by more since more have seen it. I'm not an idiot I know that. What I'm wondering is if those that have seen both mostly think the first one is better?
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2003 Nah, I've seen both and I like the remake better. Making him Cuban made it more interesting. Plus it has more style. And I personally like the locations and cinematography.

What I'm wondering is if those that have seen both mostly think the first one is better? I believe it is the whole "Everyone loves this new remake/sequel that a certain number of people rebel against what they see is a hivemind mentality by way of saying that they like the original film/first installment" mentality. This is something that is fairly common amongst movie buffs. I know that when Silence of the Lambs hit theaters and became a run-away hit that a lot of movie watchers dismissed the film and instead would loudly proclaim that "Manhunter" (the 1987 film version of Red Dragon, the SOTL prequel) was a better film.... BTW is that your actual picture in your Avatar pic?
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2003 Saying the original is better is a safe bet. It usually is.

Guest JumpinJackFlash Report post Posted October 1, 2003 I've been wanting to pick of Treasure of the Sierra Madre, but I haven't had time to yet. I might pick it up within the next few weeks.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2003 Ok, I don't have the new DVD set but I do have factory tapes of both Scarface movies. The original film is vastly better, it's not even close. Let me count the ways....some might consider this spoilers but I figure anyone reading this thread has seen some version of it: 1. Running time. The original Scarface is about 93m and moves at a very fast pace. Tony shoots people, hits on his boss's chick, takes out rival mobs, beats his sister, gets shot down by the police. The remake tells basically this same exact story and yet takes 3 HOURS??? 2. Paul Muni is preferrable to Pacino in this role. Yes, Pacino has a lot of wild over the top lines but this was the origin of Pacino being a parody of himself. Muni is dangerous, humorous, ignorant, jealous, even sympathetic. 3. George Raft is obviously preferrable to Stephen Bauer. Hell, the original has Raft originating the legendary "gangster flipping the coin" routine. Does Bauer do anything at all memorable? I'm baffled as to why the original Scarface isn't as well known. In terms of the 30s gangster cycle it was better and more violent than anything with Cagney, Bogart, or Edward G. Robinson. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2003 Oh, and in regards to the dumbass at Suncoast, I did in fact mention the original Scarface to him and correct him....he had never heard of it. He literally meant the Pacino movie was the original, not just the original DVD release.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 1, 2003 Did he actually say "Scarface is the original FILM" or is that just what you think he meant. If he did actually say it, I have no clue why he would say such a thing if has no knowledge of another version. Unless he was out of his mind and was referring to every mob/gangster film made since Pacino's Scarface. It's not that I'm calling you a liar, but it's just an insane and inexplicable thing for anyone to declare a movie to be the original film when they have no knowledge of any other versions. There's no explainable reason for why someone would do such a thing, so I maintain my doubts.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2003 All my money as of late's gone into online orders and the little bit I've got coming is going for next week. I'll pick up the set sometime in the future, but I'll live until then. I'm actually thinking about getting the Adventures of Robin Hood, too. I caught the documentary on TCM that's also on the DVD and it pretty much sold me on the DVD. Like Scarface, though, it'll have to wait.

MrRant 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2003 Def Jam presents The Origins of a Gangsta' (30 mins) Why the FUCK is this on this DVD? Makes me almost not want to buy it. I give a fuck about rapper's trying to be Tony and failing badly.

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2003 Yeah, no kidding. How about finding out what it's all about before going crazy over it? That movie happens to be one of the more well-known inspirational movies for "gangstas," because of the rags-to-riches story.
