Biggest disappointment

Recommended Posts

Guest Redhawk

Summer of 2001, Rob Van Dam looked ready to become the next big thing. Now he's just getting out of the midcard, if last week's IC title win goes anywhere.

Late '01-early '02, Booker T looked ready to make that jump to the next level. Many people predicted he would be World Champ soon. Now, even without the injury, he was pretty much a midcarder on RAW.

Ever since he came to WWE in 1999, Jericho seemed ready to become the next big star. Aside from a weakly booked title run, he hasn't hit that point yet.

So which one of these three situations has been the biggest disappointment? Who has been the most misused, underused or simply buried? Or maybe it's someone else for you: Goldust, John Cena, Eddy Guerrero, Ultimo Dragon....there's a long list of guys with promise who just don't seem to be at the level they should be.

I'd say RVD, just because I was dead sure he would be the World champion by the end of 2001 and it never happened. Now it looks like he'll never get to that level again. And it's not any fault of his either. He got over huge as a face despite the creative team booking him as a heel, was maybe the No. 1 babyface at times, and now no one has any faith that he can ever win the big match. The blame for that falls right on the creative team.

I'd say Ultimo as the poor guy wasn't even given a chance.

I mean, HELLOOOOOOOOO, it's fucking ULTIMO DRAGON. How they can just toss him to the side of all people, is beyond me.

Out of the "usual suspects" like RVD, Booker T, Jericho, and the like I'd pick Chris Jericho personally. The guy has it all, and could (and still will in my opinion) become one of the greatest champion of all time.

Booker T, I don't know. Over everyone else, he's actually the biggest disappointment I suppose, but whatever.

There have been so many disappointments it's not even funny.

Overall, I'd say how WWE used WCW, ECW, and nWo are all MORE disappointing than any single wrestler.

In terms of guys who just didn't live up to the hype, I'd say 3MW, Nathan Jones, and a few other guys.

WWE, the land of disappointments.

I have to agree with Downhome. Right before he debuted, all I heard about was how great Ultimo was, and how awsome a title match against Rey would be. Now, a few months laters, I've seen the guy twice (when I remember to watch Velocity), and he's almost allways in some throw away match. All because Vince doesn't think he connects with the audience or whatever.

If you've ONLY seen Ultimo in WWE, then you haven't seen his greatness.

If Tajiri can get over, I fully believe that Ultimo could as well.

Hell, Ultimo was VERY over in WCW.

If they feel it's because he had Sonny Ono, then damnit, give him a manager or something. The fact is that Ultimo is just too great of a wrestler, to just let him be tossed to the side as WWE is doing with him right now.

I too would have to say it was Jericho. He has what I believe to be the best all around package for appeasing internet (technical wrestling skills) and arena fans (charisma and mic skills) alike, but since he's never been allowed to get the better of the E's golden triangle (Austin, Rock and Trips), chances of resurrecting his main event career are slim at this point.

RVD, he was insanely over in 2002 with the push he was getting and I was absolutely sure he was finally going to win his first world title at Unforgiven. HHH even convinced me more by costing RVD the IC title on the last RAW (I think) before the PPV.

And then nope, RVD's greatness died that night. What made it worse was that before going into the match, HHH talked smack to RVD and even INSULTED Flair in that segment and Flair helps HHH win the match? I'm sorry that swerve was super lame.

Raven should of been Raw champ

Goldust should of been Main Event worker

Chris Nowinski could of been in Evilution or along with Regal could of been a major force in the midcard

Dudley Boys only seem to work with one tag team a year? FUCK YOU ERIC BISHOFF for disliking tag teams. Yeah I know Bishoff is not the major boss but I have to blame someone.

Stevie Richards, Goldust, Val Venis all could of been above average main event jobbers at least. It would of been more entertaining than watching F'N Randy Orton or whoever comes out of OVW for the push out of nowhere.

Booker T was made a joke the second he appeared on Raw and he never really recovered.

This is the sort of bizarre thread that would be like "Luger was a disappointment." Let's face it, Luger was booked like shit for most of his career....never winning the big one until it was WAY too late, didn't even beat Flair for it, numerous heel/face turns, not beating Yokozuna, it's all pretty glaring. With any sort of sensible booking Luger would have drawn better than he did, and the same goes for RVD, Booker, and Jericho.

It's not RVD and Booker's fault that the booking commitee chose for them to loses their title matches.

No one said it was. I'm not disappointed in RVD or Booker personally, I'm disappointed that they've been booked into midcarders when they could have been much more.

Chris Benoit...my gosh just look at the build-up to his return from the neck injury...oh wait, there wasn't any. Not a single little music video, NOTHING. If anyone should have held the WWF title in the past few years it should have been Chris Benoit. Give the man a belt before he retires.

My biggest disappointment would be Stephanie McMahon choosing Triple H over Kurt Angle in the love triangle storyline. It's been downhill ever since.

Raven getting fired without getting a chance to shine.

Tazz becoming a commentator without getting a chance to shine in ring.

The Dudley Boyz being face.

Mark Henry, Test, Rodney Mack & Billy Gunn pushes.

The cruiserweight division.

Both Raw & Smackdown tag team divisions.

I think its sad when a guy that has the total package isnt given anytime to shine but Nathan Jones and Albert both are given Mania spots.

Jericho has everything.

RVD if booked right is great, and his mic skills are not really that bad. Just dont have him do a 20 promo.

Booker is the man. Entertaining. Loyal. Can be a great face or heel.

Raven should of been Raw champ

WHAT!?!?!??

OK, I agree that's going a bit far. But Raven could have been used far, far better than he was. I mean, this guy has the most intense promos in the business and while his in-ring work isn't great it's at least acceptable, and balanced with a very good understanding of psychology. And while it helps if there's a hardcore environment, he doesn't NEED it (which is perhaps Tommy Dreamer's main weakness in the present-day WWE).

Can anyone tell me why Maven, who was the Finisherless Wonder for about two years, was still contracted when Raven was let go? How about Nowinksi?

Because they were on Tough Enough and never wrestled in a different company.....yes I know it's sad but that's why.

Shannon Moore wrestled in WCW too. I happen to like Shannon Moore - but you can't tell me that Raven, booked correctly and allowed to shine on the mic, wouldn't be a bigger draw than him. Although I guess Raven's age, past failed run with the company and opinionated attitude probably didn't help.

What about Funaki? I like him too, but come on...

what they're doing with Ultimo Dragon is what dissapoints me the most because they're not even giving him a chance...at ALL. if he was put in some big matches on smackdown i bet he'd blow the audience away. Ultimo vs Rey would be amazing, i've also been wanting to see Ultimo vs Angle...Rey and Angle had great chemistry, i think Ultimo and Angle would too. if jericho was on smackdown (which he should be), i'd love to see another Ultimo vs Jericho match...they had a great match in japan...jericho considers it one of his top 3 matches.

Chris Benoit is yet another HUGE dissapointment...one of the best, if not the best wrestler on the WWE...and he's fueding with A-Train???

Same with Eddie Guerrero...to me, he's the most entertaining wrestler in the WWE at the moment and he's extremely over with the crowd...i mean, he gets chants when he's a heel...when is the WWE gonna get a clue? he most definitely deserves a title shot...and SOON. they're recycling the main events, it's sickening...Brock vs Undertaker??? haven't we seen this like 329043290 times already? Instead of doing this crap all over again, why not try something new and put Eddie up against Brock for the title? or Benoit up against Brock? i'd love to see that.

Jeff Hardy. If there's anyone on this list I'm disappointed in personallly, it's him. And seeing where Matt Hardy has taken his career and character (in spite of bookers not loving him), makes Jeff's decline even sadder.

Speaking recently, its gotta be poor Ultimo Dragon. All the other people named (Jericho, Booker T, RVD, Benoit, etc) are at least TV mainstays even if they're never allowed past a certain level. But with Ultimo we have an amazing potential superstar who wrestled- what, twice maybe? on Smackdown and then was blacklisted from the main show altogether. We've all heard the term "misused talent" but I've never seen it to this extent.

Well, maybe one other time... fucking Raven! Now I'm not gonna say he should've been made World Champ or anything, but he could've at least been high midcard. Such a waste. :spank:

I was saying the reason Raven didn't get a push is because he didn't come to the WWE until he had nowhere else to go. He was made somewhere else and it's been proven that it drives Vince nuts!

Top Ten Biggest Disappointments in WWE.

1) Ultimo Dragon

2) Jerry Lynn

3) Tommy Dreamer

4) Raven

5) Rob Van Dam

6) Chris Jericho

7) Chris Benoit

8) Dean Malenko

9) Nunzio

10) Perry Saturn

Why?

Ultimo Dragon and Jerry Lynn never got the chance to shine. Lynn was depushed prematurely because the WWE wasn't happy with his short-term crowd reactions (after being in the company for a month) and claimed "they didn't have anything to for him to do." Ultimo Dragon was hyped up but then almost immediately turned into a Velocity star.

Tommy Dreamer and Raven paid their dues HARD. They are both extremely talented and could have made huge impacts in WWE. Sadly, the WWE decided to pass.

RVD, Jericho, and Benoit are all pretty self explanatory.

Nunzio and Saturn are two guys who shined when given the opportunities elsewhere. They were both booked to look weak all the time in WWE.

Dean Malenko just might be one of the most underappreciated workers in the history of wrestling.
