GHETTOPOLY~!

Recommended Posts

Buying stolen properties, pimpin hoes, building crack houses and projects, paying protection fees and getting car jacked are some of the elements of the game. Not dope enough?...If you don't have the money that you own to the loan shark you might just land yourself in da Emergency Room.

I would buy this. Be pimpin' hoes boardwide yo.

And yes you CAN buy this.

Check out the CNN article: 'Ghettopoly' game causes outrage

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- Cheap Trick Avenue instead of Boardwalk? Hernando's Chop Shop instead of Reading Railroad?

Black leaders are outraged over a new board game called "Ghettopoly" that has "playas" acting like pimps and game cards reading, "You got yo whole neighborhood addicted to crack. Collect $50."

Black clergymen say the game, the brainchild of a Pennsylvania man, should be banned, and have called for a boycott of Urban Outfitters unless the company stops selling Ghettopoly in its chain of clothing stores.

Urban Outfitters has not publicly commented on the issue, and did not return a call seeking comment on Wednesday.

"If we are silent on this issue there is more of this type to come," the Rev. Robert P. Shine Sr., president of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia & Vicinity, said at a sidewalk rally Wednesday in front Urban Outfitters' corporate headquarters in Philadelphia.

Shine displayed the game board, with properties including Westside Liquor, Harlem, The Bronx, and Long Beach City, and squares labeled Smitty's XXX Peep Show, Weinstein's Gold and Platinum, and Tyron's Gun Shop.

Players draw "Hustle" and "Ghetto Stash" cards with directions like, "You're a little short on loot, so you decided to stick up a bank. Collect $75," and "Steal $$$ if you pass Let$ Roll."

The creator of Ghettopoly, David Chang, did not immediately answer e-mails or phone calls seeking comment about the game.

On his Web site, Chang is unapologetic, and promises that more games -- Hoodopoly, Hiphopopoly, Thugopoly and Redneckopoly -- are coming soon.

"It draws on stereotypes not as a means to degrade, but as a medium to bring together in laughter," Chang maintains, adding, "If we can't laugh at ourselves ... we'll continue to live in blame and bitterness."

But the Ghettopoly board depicts figures labeled "Malcum X" and "Martin Luthor King Jr." -- intentionally misspelled -- noted Rev. Glenn Wilson, pastor of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church.

"This is beyond making fun, to use the caricature of Dr. King in this regard," Wilson said. "There's no way that game could be taken in any way other than that this man had racist intent in marketing it."

The Philadelphia black clergy and Men United for a Better Philadelphia were just the latest to protest the game. In Chicago, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Catholic Church, called for a boycott of Urban Outfitters. In Florida, the St. Petersburg and Hillsborough County chapters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People urged the company to stop carrying the game.

"I was outraged. We called Outfitters, we wrote them a letter, we held a press conference, but we've had no response," Pfleger said Wednesday.

Let a playa play yo.

I'd play "Kick the guy who made this games ass over and over again" day and night though.

If this was Holocosoply or SeptemberEleventh-opoly, there would be out rage. But now he is just making tastless jokes about black people, so that's cool. Fuck him and fuck Urban Outfitters.

Yeah...thats hilarious...blatant racism is the funniest thing EVER.

You mean it isn't?

I chuckled a bit, but I'm an insensitive lummox

Although stereotyping is not the same as racism, IMO.

One other problem I might see coming from this is it seems the creator of the game is Chinese, based on his last name (OMG stereotype)... if a black dude made this to mock his own race, would it be as big an issue?

This game is racism through using stereotypes and if a black guy did it, it would still be racist game.

I hate when people are amused by racism and then claim that it isn't racist so they can feel better. If you like racist jokes/games or whatever, you like racist jokes/games. It doesn't change what this game is about and how insulting and tasteless it is. I think this is just another case of people being so hard to be "cool" and anti-PC, that blatant racism is overlooked and those that are rightfully insulted by SOMEONE INSULTING THEM is being oversensitive.

I'd always thought of racism as being hateful or biased based on race. Racists of course will use stereotyping, but non-racists will sometimes engage in stereotyping as well, just like some non-racists will still laugh at racial jokes.

In short, shitloads of people stereotype. It's human nature, IMO.

I hate when people are amused by racism and then claim that it isn't racist so they can feel better.

I'm not claiming it to feel better (if you wish to insist on that from here on, okay), I just don't see it, but like I said, I'm just an insensitive bastard.

If you like racist jokes/games or whatever, you like racist jokes/games.

Which I will admit that I do.

Not sure if anti-PC can be equated with "cool," as it seems like the "cool" thing to do now is love everyone unequivocally, never say anything remotely bad about anyone and condemn the hell out of those who do.

But yes, I see how people are offended by this, and I know just because it amuses me (offensive humor will always have a niche) that it doesn't make it right in the big picture, and of course, in the end, it'll be the money that decides who wins.

Well, he says he's bringing redneckopoly out. I dunno how many rednecks would be offended by it.

Only after he comes out with 4 more games insulting black people...then he will insult southerners. OOOOOHHH.

The biggest problem is alot of blacks are not like what rap music says blacks are. So it is complete utter bullshit to make a game like this. I don't care if he makes one for rednecks. This game basiclly states that blacks in the "ghettos" only care about money, bitches, rims, and guns. It is bullshit to even make a game like this. This is highly racist.

The reason most whites would not get upset because there are "whites" and "rednecks". As if there are two different groups. For blacks there are "ghetto negros" and "blacks" all as one group. So Al Sharpton, Jadakiss, myself, and Bill Cosby are all grouped together when none of us are alike. It as makeing fun of one makes fun of all. That is how typecasting of races goes. This game isn't funny at all. Those who did find it funny need a check up from the neck up.

Of course rednecks won't be offended by it

1. Rednecks are too dumb to be offended, and

2. They couldn't read the game

3 more games about blacks, although I admit that the "Hoodopoly" and "Thugopoly" are driving it into the ground.

Hiphopology I could see coming out a bit differently, mocking said music industry (that couldn't be bad, could it?) rather than ghetto-dwellers.

And MX83, on another topic, how did you get a negative post count?

I'm confused, where is the racism in this or where should I be outraged?

Can people not laugh at shit any more?

I can.

Okay, there is one thing to think its funny, but their is no way that you cant see how this is racist. Come on now, thats just bullshit.

The game pieces are crack, a basketball, a 40 ounce and other shit. The words are written in that bullshit ebonic crap that white people swear black people talk like.

I swear, people just want to make everyone else look like oversensitve pussies when they "gasp" get offended when someone attempts to offend them. The purpose of this game is to be offensive. Through racist conotations and stereotypes, this game is being marketed to do what? Insult a certain race and I know you can't truely say you can't see that.

Personally, I don't see this as typecasting of race, more as typecasting of "ghettos". It didn't even occur to me that anyone would consider this rascist until people pointed that out to me.

Maybe I'm just too naive.

Of course, everyone on the board is black, it has the cute little Malcum Luthor King and Malcum X characters. Then on the site, it has mock quotes from famous black people whose names have been butchered to say how much of the "shiznit" the game is.

No, I can't. It's just a big joke on all of the "stereotypes" of the ghetto. I'm willing there are blacks out there that see the humor in this. I know I'd be able to if someone came out with a southern game, or even something making light of Christian and religious sterotypes.

So no, I see this as just humor, is nothing different than what we see in so many films and hear in music, this is just a rip of all of that. This isn't a knock on all black people, it's just a simple stereotypical joke on the ghetto, etc...

For what it's worth, there is a hell of a lot of people out there where said sterotypes fit, I know plenty myself.

I think Ripper is right. There was no reason for this game to be made, other than to laugh at a stereotype and mock them.

Shoot, I find this game funny as hell. "Malcum X" -- Gold. But shouldn't there be an "e" in "Tyron's Gun Shop"?

I haven't been down with the streets for a while now, can someone tell me the difference between Hoodopoly, Hiphopopoly and Thugopoly?

I hope this doesn't deter Poo-Face Al away from his bid to become President.

Can't wait for Redneckopoly, and I wonder if there will be one for Hispanics called Burro-oply.

I'm wondering if Mr. Chang needed to get permission from the makers of Monopoly to do this.

Oh, and I guess if you pass "GO" in this game, you LOSE $200 because you got your wallet stolen.

And what exactly is Boardwalk -- the Police Station?...
