CONTRACT EXTENSIONS

SIGNED:

Seattle : RJ Frost has been signed to a contract extension, $9,002,900 per year, for 5 years.

Columbus : Peter Kostka has been signed to a contract extension, $1,795,500 per year, for 3 years.

LEFT UNSIGNED:

Los Angeles : Ben Dover (can't blame the Glory Holes after Dover's season-ending injury)

Columbus : Robert Henderson (This is huge. Word is that Big Red wanted to test the market, since he is a phenom at the age of 23 and is only getting better with age. With the Pride seemingly on their way to the playoffs, however, it's hard to say what will become of Robert.)

And an article that I forgot with the SFBL July 2013 update:

Jacksonville's Winston Ghandi has great day, hits three longballs

JACKSONVILLE - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Jacksonville's shortstop Winston Ghandi accomplished that feat in a 14-4 win over Houston. In the 5th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Bryan Norris. A pitch from Salvator Salo in the 6th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 378 feet from home plate in left field. His 3rd blast, a two-run homerun off Harlan Shaub in the 7th inning, landed an estimated 393 feet from home plate. Overall he went 3 for 4, scoring three times and collecting 7 RBI. In 4888 career at bats, he has hit 162 homeruns and collected 831 RBI. Shiro Suzuki was the last player to hit three dingers in a game on July 13th, 2013.

By The Numbers

35

For thirty-five games, Logan Caldwell was Mr. Consistent for the Detroit Motor Vehicles. Now, with the streak broken at 35 (tying for the longest hitting streak in North-South history, and the 2nd longest streak in SFBL history), it's time to break it down, game-by-game.

How Did Detroit Do During The Streak?

The streak started on May 30th, ending on July 15th, breaking it down in every game that Caldwell had an at-bat in, it looks something like this:

May 30th: 2 hits vs. Houston (W)

May 31st: 1 hit vs. Vancouver (W)

June 1st: 2 hits vs. Vancouver (W)

June 2nd: 1 hit vs. Vancouver (L)

June 4th: 2 hits vs. Atlanta (L)

June 5th: 1 hit vs. Atlanta (W)

June 6th: 1 hit vs. Atlanta (L)

June 7th: 2 hits vs. Columbus (W)

June 9th: 1 hit vs. Columbus (W)

June 10th: 3 hits vs. Memphis (W)

June 11th: 2 hits vs. Memphis (L)

June 12th: 1 hit vs. Memphis (L)

June 14th: 2 hits vs. Indianapolis (L)

June 15th: 2 hits vs. Indianapolis (W)

June 16th: 2 hits vs. Chicago (L)

June 17th: 3 hits vs. Chicago (L)

June 18th: 1 hit vs. Chicago (L)

June 20th: 2 hits vs. Memphis (W)

June 21st: 1 hit vs. Memphis (L)

June 22nd: 1 hit vs. Memphis (W)

June 23rd: 1 hit vs. Vancouver (L)

June 24th: 1 hit vs. Vancouver (L)

June 25th: 1 hit vs. Vancouver (W)

June 26th: 2 hits vs. Vancouver (W)

June 28th: 2 hits vs. Atlanta (L)

June 29th: 1 hit vs. Atlanta (W)

June 30th: 1 hit vs. Atlanta (W)

July 2nd: 2 hits vs. Chicago (W)

July 3rd: 1 hit vs. Chicago (L)

July 9th: 3 hits vs. Charlotte (L)

July 10th: 2 hits vs. Charlotte (L)

July 11th: 2 hits vs. Indianapolis (L)

July 12th: 1 hit vs. Indianapolis (L)

July 13th: 1 hit vs. Indianapolis (W)

July 14th: 2 hits vs. Houston (W)

July 15th: 0 hits vs. Houston (L)

Total record during the streak: 17-18 (excluding the loss when the streak was broken)

So, as you can see, the hitting streak from Caldwell really didn't help things for the hapless DMV.

Still, congratulations to Caldwell on an amazing streak.

Talkin' Expansion

20 teams in the SFBL reside in the 20 states of the union. Here are the states without an SFBL team (team name ideas that I've heard or come up with in parentheses):

Alabama

Arkansas

Connecticut

Delaware

District of Columbia

Idaho (Idaho Udapimps)

Iowa

Kansas

Kentucky

Lousiana (New Orleans Crunk Machine)

Maine

Minnesota

Mississippi (Mississippi Madness)

Missouri

Montana (Montana Wasteland)

Nebraska

New Hampshire

New Mexico

North Dakota

Oklahoma

Oregon

Rhode Island (Some kind of Quahog reference, I forget)

South Carolina (Charleston Dancin' Fools)

South Dakota

Utah (Utah Joes)

Vermont

Virginia

West Virginia

Wisconsin

Wyoming (Wyoming Whatchamacallits)

Since the Division Alignment would look something like this:

East-West: East, Central, West

North-South: North, Central, South

Teams are most likely to be placed in tornado alley (Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Arkansas), unless some movements are made to place new teams in the East, West, North, or South.

Feel free to chip in with any ideas.

Let's say for whatever reason we keep the current teams, what would the division alignment look like? *just trying to get an idea of where new teams would fit and what sections might be weak*

- How's that for a possible realignment? Possibly switch Boston to North and some of the expansion teams seem to work well in their spots. We could also shift Baltimore to the East and place Arkansas in the Central in place of them and another expansion like Missouri in the Central. This way, E + W = 14, N + S = 12

Is it possible to get some Canadian teams in this game?

Just because, if so, someone should make an Edmonton team.

I'd also demand a trade there immediately. :D

Won't happen, but I'd do it.

Vancouver is Canada, isn't it?

Anyway, since Edmonton is in Central/Western Canada, it'd require some more moving around to shove Edmonton into there.

The expansion proposal that you bring up is interesting, Harley. If we do go with North Dakota, I'd likely just have a Dakota team that brings together both of the states.

Nebraska? Pshaw. Put Charlotte in the Central and go with New Orleans.

...yeah, that's just because I want the New Orleans Crunk Machine, but is that really so bad? Plus, it works in this realignment scenario (in my opinion).

Actually, New Orleans is interchangable with Nebraska in the Central.

Louisiana is deep south, but it's also close to the center of the country. So it works.

I'd actually like that better than Nebraska, because as mentioned before, the Crunk Machine needs to happen.

Yes, Vancouver is. I just want more Canadian teams dammit. Plus, if there was an Edmonton, every post that I'd bring on a subject, I'd add at the bottom, "And trade me to Edmonton, dammit it all." Just for a good joke. Edmonton wouldn't really be hard. It's West. North and West. We are NOT central.

Just central of Alberta, not of the Country we live in.

Besides, I believe that you should at the very least open up a team in Toronto. As Toronto is considered the business centre of Canada, and all.

No expansion draft, it'd take far too long to accomplish.

The expansion teams will be filled with fictional minor leaguers that will be promoted to the expansion teams.

Yes, that means that these expansion teams will suck for some time. But they will get better.

And really, I've had no problem with people asking for trades to other teams. I just didn't know if the rest of the SFBL players thought it was such a great idea (we did toss around the idea of having an all TSM team at one time, I remember).

Awards/SFBL Players In The News:

Detroit's Logan Caldwell slams three taters

DETROIT - Logan Caldwell was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Detroit to a 9-2 win over Columbus by homering three times. His 1st shot, off Laron Eickenloff in the 1st inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Braulio Cerda. A pitch from Jose Lopez in the 8th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 398 feet from home plate in left field. Overall he finished 3 for 5, scoring three times and driving in 5 runs. So far this season he is batting .329 with 33 homers and 86 RBI.

Henderson earns Batter of the Month Award

The North-South Batter of the Month award goes to Robert Henderson, Columbus' starting leftfielder. Robert pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .411 with 12 and 27 RBI while slugging .777. His season numbers are: .356 AVG, 182 hits, 26 doubles, 4 triples and 40 taters, along with 109 RBI and 115 runs scored. He's 1st in the North-South in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 3rd in RBI!

Atlanta's LeBeau wins Pitcher of the Month Award

The winner of this month's North-South Pitcher of the Month award is Atlanta's Eric LeBeau. He went 6-0 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 1.40. He struck out 37 in 45 innings. This season LeBeau compiled an ERA of 3.00, going 17-9 in 29 starts. He fanned 153 while giving up 152 hits in 216 innings. He's 3rd in the North-South in ERA and 1st in wins!

Relievers:

1) The Berzerker (3-3 (37 SV), 3.61 ERA, 2.67 ERC)

2) Peter Kostka (6-2 (3 SV), 4.35 ERA, 2.88 ERC)

Notes: Winston Ghandi's injury hurt his stats for the month and for the year, as he won't quite have the same numbers that the others are having. No one can touch Robert Henderson, however, as he is on pace for a Big Stick-award worthy performance, while also looking at a potential 50 homeruns if he can come alive in this final month. It's more than possible that Big Red will take a jump up that Highest Paid Players list in the free agency period, whether or not he comes back to Columbus.

Rolf continues to convert saves--37 is tops in the entire SFBL. Onita had a rocky August, but is still having a great year, while Giant Gonzales' career is seemingly running out of steam, on pace for a 20-loss season which would certainly be death for the big man. Save for a sudden trade, however, "Beanball" is scheduled to finish out his career with the Hanoi Janes--he's signed through 2015, when he would be 39 and certainly near retiring age.

His 11 decision losing streak--only recently snapped--has to be discouraging, however.

At least I can take pride in that. I wish I'd win a trophy before my career dries up.

I know how you feel. Suzuki always seemed to do well for Phoenix, but it never seemed to translate into wins for the team, which was frustrating. At least this year they will finish a respectable 2nd place. Also, it is nice to see the Seattle Frasiers doing well now, I have always, strangely, enjoyed that team name, for whatever reason.

It's just, James is putting up some lovely numbers that I should be helping my team get to the playoffs. Not just have a reasonable record.

I was absolutely pissed when my team blew the playoffs because I wasn't there.

Awards/SFBL Players In The News:

Hunter wins Player of the Week Award

The Player of the Week award in the East-West goes to Seattle's David Hunter this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive performance in his league. He hit .393 with 8 RBI and slugged .857 in 28 at bats. He has hit 18 homeruns while batting .247 this season. His 141 hits and 33 walks add up to a .288 on-base percentage.

RJ Frost knocks lights out with three homeruns

BALTIMORE - Seattle beat Baltimore 6-3, but that was not the real story of the game. RJ Frost was, as he went deep three times. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Trace Kessinger. A 449 foot drive to center field marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun again off Kessinger in the 7th inning. The game was tied, 3-3, after the blast. His 3rd shot, off Francisco Vives in the 14th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. RJ stroked 3 hits in 6 at bats, scoring three times with 5 RBI. In 5704 career at bats, he has hit 303 homeruns and collected 1105 RBI. The induction into the Hall of Fame is almost a sure thing for him now!

Seattle's Onita out for postseason

SEATTLE - Seattle's right-hander Ann Onita suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for the remainder of the postseason. In the 4th inning of the game against Las Vegas she experienced pain in her throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Ann has a record of 17-6 this season, with an ERA of 4.15. In 191 innings she was able to strike out 106 batters. She's 4th in the East-West in wins!

3) Logan Caldwell (.322, 38 HR, 105 RBI)

4) Carlos DeSantis (.307, 41 HR, 115 RBI)

5) Patrick Hannon (.279, 35 HR, 107 RBI)

12) John Duran (.246, 13 HR, 53 RBI)

13) Charlie Matthews (.204, 9 HR, 33 RBI)

Starting Pitchers:

1) Eric LeBeau (22-11, 2.90 ERA, 2.53 ERC)

2) Marvin Jenkins (15-8, 3.27 ERA, 3.50 ERC)

3) Ann Onita (17-6, 4.15 ERA, 3.64 ERC)

4) Giant Gonzales (9-19, 5.55 ERA, 4.68 ERC)

Relievers:

1) The Berzerker (3-4 (44 SV), 3.41 ERA, 2.87 ERC)

2) Peter Kostka (7-2 (4 SV), 4.52 ERA, 3.27 ERC)

Notes: Rolf ends up with the most saves of any relief pitcher in the SFBL at 44, and LeBeau once again finishes with a very good year, despite the 11 losses. Giant Gonzales avoids 20 losses, and Robert Henderson looks like he might be beaten out for the Big Stick by J.C. Morello, who leads the league in homeruns with 63 and finished second in runs batted in.

Onita's season-ending injury at the end of the season is heartbreaking for her, since the Frasiers are moving on to the playoffs in convincing fashion.

Aww man...we finally get some good pitching despite less then stellar seasons from myself and Frost(Both hitting only .240 range) and now Annie's gotta go and miss the post season, oh well here's hoping we can make it deep at least.
