The Jokers got the home crowd going with a 3-2 lead through 4 innings, but Baltimore smothered them hard in the final three innings, pulling away with a 8-4 victory and a chance to sweep the Jokers at Trump Coliseum tomorrow.

 

Edward James went 2-for-4 with a hit and an RBI, but two homeruns in the 8th inning sealed the deal for the Crime Spree as the sweep is near for the Jokers.

With a 3-for-5 performance, driving in 3 runs and scoring twice himself with a solo homerun in the 4th inning, Edward James led his team to an easy victory over Baltimore 10-2, catching the cruising Crime Spree by surprise as they fall short of the sweep.

 

Edward James had a double later in the 4th inning that account for the other two of his three runs batted in during the course of an 8-run 4th inning that knocked Baltimore off their high horse and into the gutter with an embarrassing beatdown.

After the beatdown in Game 4, Baltimore bounced back by duplicating the Jokers and scoring a lot of runs in one inning, exploding for 6 runs in the top of the fourth. Las Vegas tried to crawl back, but ultimately fell short as their season ended in Las Vegas with a disappointing 7-5 loss to the Baltimore Crime Spree, advancing the Crime Spree to the East-West Conference Championship.

 

In his final game of the season, Jokers star Edward James went 0-for-3, walking one and striking out once, but scoring on his only opportunity to reach base while adding his third stolen base of the postseason. He finished with a .304 batting average, 1 homerun, and 5 runs batted in during the five games.

In only her second year and her first postseason appearance, Ann Onita became the first woman in SFBL history to win a postseason game, winning in impressive fashion by pitching a near complete game, Seattle providing only two runs but those two runs being more than enough to defeat the New York Bums in Game 3, bringing the series to two-games-to-one in favor of the Frasiers.

 

R.J. Frost went 2-for-4, scoring one of the two runs for Seattle. David Hunter went 0-for-4 with one strikeout, bringing his batting average to .154 on the postseason.

 

SEATTLE 2, NEW YORK 0

Seattle leads series 2-1

 

New York rallied, down 4-2 after three innings and tied the game at 5 by the end of seven innings. The game carried on into the eleventh inning, and featured plenty of dramatics.

 

After scoring two runs in the top of the 11th to put the Bums on the ropes, the Bums came up with one shot to keep them in the series.

 

After a groundout to the second baseman, Louis Robbs beat out an infield hit, and Antonio Frades doubled to the gap in left-center, advancing Robbs to third. Wanting a double play, Stephen Tamke was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ricky Breckenridge came up with the chance to be a hero, but instead struck out swinging. The Bums were left with one out...but John Slaght made that one out worth the wait.

 

With a triple down the left field line, every baserunner came home, and as Stephen Tamke wildly rounded third and streaked for home, the fans in New York knew it was over. And it was. New York wins in dramatic fashion, left fielder Roy Aliff having trouble fielding the ball and resulting in the victory for New York.

 

David Hunter went 1-for-6, scoring once and getting caught stealing the other time, and R.J. Frost went 1-for-4, driving in 2 runs, receiving a free pass and striking out twice.

 

Marvin Jenkins didn't fuck up this time, but he did only pitch 7 2/3 innings, allowing 9 hits, with 5 earned runs, walking two batters and striking out five.

 

SEATTLE 7, NEW YORK 8

Seattle knew how to create the drama at Maytag Cardboard Stadium with tens of thousands of fans watching in the stands, cheering on the Bums.

 

After building a 5-0 lead through 8 innings with 11 hits, Seattle went down without a hit in the top of the 9th, giving New York a chance to rally from a tough deficit.

 

In the bottom of the 9th, Iggy Deen was walked to begin the inning, and starter Frank Elston then allowed a double down the left field line, putting two runners in scoring position for Louis Robbs.

 

With one swing, Robbs cut the deficit to 5-3 and brought the remaining New York Bums fans to their feet, rooting their team on. Elston out, Carrera in as the closer attempts to stop the bleeding. A single from Antonio Frades doesn't help matters, as the tying run comes up to the plate with no outs. However, Chucky Staller's pinch-hit at-bat is for naught, as he flies out to right-center, failing to advance the runner. Ricky Breckenridge, the hero in Game 4 falls short as well, grounding out to the first baseman but still somehow managing to advance Antonio Frades to second.

 

Steven Zuber then came to the plate with two outs, representing the last chance for the Bums...and laced a single to center!

 

Come on down, Antonio Frades, and it's a one run game! Martin Abad was up next, and with the game-winning run at the plate and the game-tying run on first base...Abad flied out to left field.

 

Seattle wins, and New York will have to win 2 in a row against the Frasiers to move on to the East-West Championship.

Modesto Lamb pitched 8 1/3 innings in the loss, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits as Harry Clingenpeel went 2-for-3, driving in 2 runs with a double.

Peter Kostka made his first start in his career for the Pride in Game 4, and together with Vernon Duran, Charlotte did not stand a chance.

 

After throwing 65 pitches in 6 innings, allowing 3 hits and one earned run while striking out five and walking none, Vernon Duran came on in relief of Kostka, pitching three innings of PERFECT relief. Meanwhile, Columbus piled on the runs, cruising to victory over Charlotte in Game 4 and giving Columbus a big 3-1 advantage in the best-of-7 series.

 

Neall Issacson drove in his 4th and 5th RBI as two of the seven runs that Columbus scored in the game.

With the season on the line, Charlotte came out with their teeth bared, and both the Harlots and the Pride swung the bats like kings, as five balls left the field and traveled into the stands where Harlots fans were waiting.

 

When it was all said and done in the Brothel, however, Columbus had simply outpowered Charlotte and had topped everything the South Division champs had thrown at them.

 

Columbus' 11-9 victory sent them to the East-West Conference Championship to face the winner of Memphis/Vancouver. Kostka did not pitch in this game, still winded after his amazing 6 inning performance as a starter.

Mike Van Siclen went 2-for-3, walking once, striking out once, and scoring twice.

 

Robert Henderson also went 2-for-3, scoring once while receiving a free pass of his own.

From disappointment to embarassment.

 

In one of the biggest blowouts in playoff history, Memphis reminded Vancouver that their offense is simply superior to theirs, with 6 Eels driving in more than one run, and William Salsbury bringing in five runs, his first five RBI of the postseason, but they're big ones that carry Memphis to a HUGE 18-6 victory over the Vasectomy, giving them a 3-games-to-2 advantage against Vancouver.

 

Mike Van Siclen went 1-for-5, striking out once.

 

Robert Henderson went 1-for-4 with a walk and scored once.

 

William Salsbury went 5-for-5, scoring 4 times and driving in 5 runs. Amazingly, no homeruns were hit by the Eels in this game.

GAME 6

 

Seattle leads series 3-2

 

It wasn't pretty, but Seattle scrapped together a hard-fought victory over the New York Bums 10-9, winning the series at Microsoft Field and advancing to the East-West Conference Championship to face off against the Baltimore Crime Spree.

 

New York had threatened a Seattle lead late once again, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 9th with two outs off Raul Carrera, but Tim Righini came on in relief and was able to get Antonio Frades out with runners on first and second to end the game and the season for New York.

 

David Hunter had his best showing of the postseason so far, going 3-for-4 with one RBI, scoring three times and being walked once. R.J. Frost had a rare bad day, coming up empty with a 0-for-5 day that brought his postseason batting average down to .227.

 

Ann Onita made her second postseason start, picking up a rather ugly victory, but a victory nonetheless as the Seattle bullpen held steady and increased her record to 2-0.

Memphis' Bocefus Longenbach only allowed two hits in eight innings of work, both of those hits from Vancouver's Mike Van Siclen.

 

Van Siclen's two-run homerun in the top of the third tied the game at the time, but Memphis added a couple of runs in later innings and the Luv Connection was only one man, as Vancouver lost Game 6 and the series, their season ending with a 4-2 loss to Memphis in which Memphis proved that not only do they have the offense to win 18-6 in blowouts, but also that they can shut down opponents with their superior pitching.

 

Van Siclen's 2-for-4, 2 RBI, one run performance brought his final numbers in the series to .480, 2 HR, and 6 runs batted in, leading the team in all three categories during the six games in the postseason.

 

Robert Henderson went 0-for-4, never coming alive in the postseason after an excellent regular season and finishing with a .240 batting average, with no homeruns or runs batted in.

David Hunter started his second section of the postseason by going 0-for-4, and R.J. Frost mimicked that performance, as his postseason batting average dropped to a depressing .192.

David Hunter was walked once on a 0-for-4 day, his batting average falling to .194. Frost seemed to show signs of improvement, on the other hand, improving his batting average to .233 in the postseason with a 2-for-4 day, driving in one run, representing the fourth run batted in in total during these eight postseason games.

 

Dante Rodriguez' brought in two more runs in this game for the Crime Spree, improving his postseason total to 11, including two homeruns and a .424 batting average.

"Now Err'body in the Club Get" Tipsy Gesner did it again, taking the high-powered offense of the Memphis Eels and allowing only five hits in seven-plus innings, as Columbus rolled to a 5-0 victory over the Eels in Game 1 of the Best-of-Seven series to decide a North-South Conference Champion.

 

Neall Isaacson drove in his eighth run of the postseason on a 1-for-4 day, and also scored once himself, as three runs in the third inning and two in the eighth were more than enough to stop the streaking Eels.

Seattle finally got back on track, scoring three runs in the first inning and then slowly increasing their lead, eventually moving to a 7-4 victory to bring themselves within one game of the Crime Spree.

 

Ann Onita improved to 3-0 in the postseason with another impressive six inning performance, castrating Baltimore's offense and allowing only eight hits and four runs; Onita also walked three and struck out two.

 

On the offensive side, David Hunter went 1-for-4, with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one run with a solo homerun in the 8th inning with two outs. R.J. Frost made an error in the field, and was an error at the plate, going 0-for-3, but Frost crossed the plate in his only appearance where he reached base, a walk.

Memphis finally got their offense going, and Columbus was completely and utterly defenseless to stop it. A seven-run 4th inning was the highlight of a 13-4 Memphis romp that brought them within one game of the Pride in the best-of-7 series.

 

Still no sign of Peter Kostka, although he is always available to pitch, he simply hasn't been called upon lately.

Seattle established an early lead and didn’t look back, as Baltimore took too long to try and rally back.

 

After scoring five combined runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, Seattle held on through the late innings, stopping a late rally from Baltimore before it could get rolling and taking Game 5 7-5.

 

David Hunter’s only hit was a triple that drove in two runs, going 1-for-5 on the day and scoring two batters after hitting his two-RBI triple in the bottom of the third inning.

 

R.J. Frost went 1-for-3, walked once as his postseason average moved to .211. Hunter’s is at .204, but Hunter picked up his fifth and sixth RBI of the postseason as Seattle completed a home sweep of Baltimore, traveling back to the Pen to try and close out the series..

Onita looked to go 4-0 with a win in her fourth start of the postseason, but it wasn’t meant to be. Baltimore was determined to avoid elimination in the Conference Championship, and would not be denied.

 

Down 3-1 after six innings, Seattle came back with a big 4-run inning in the seventh, but Baltimore responded with two runs, tying the game at five and forcing extra innings. Unfortunately, closer Raul Carrera could not stop the Crime Spree as Michael Maley’s solo homerun down the right field line with two outs won the game for Baltimore and forced a Game 7!

 

David Hunter went 0-for-5, his batting average falling under .200 while R.J. Frost went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI, bringing his RBI total to six on the postseason and his batting average to .233.

 

Onita received the no-decision while working seven innings, giving up nine hits and five runs with four walks and four strikeouts in 109 pitches, allowing the crucial two-run homerun that tied the game for Baltimore before finally getting pulled.

Two runs in the bottom of the eighth broke a 2-2 tie and allowed Memphis to win Game 5, pulling back within one game of the Pride and avoiding their season ending prematurely.

 

Kostka remained in the bullpen for the game, obviously well-rested even after his start.

Memphis came out swinging, and Columbus paid dearly. Kostka made an appearance, but he, along with the other five Columbus pitchers, simply could not stop the rush of runs that Memphis produced en route to an 11-7 victory that emphatically forced a Game Seven to decide the Conference Champion.

 

Kostka pitched for 1 and 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on one hit and walking two while striking out one.

Mikah Zirkwitz’ two-run homerun in the top of the fifth inning was the tiebreaker for the Frasiers and was ultimately the difference maker as George Alongi and the Seattle bullpen held Baltimore to only one run in the bottom of the first inning, winning the game and the series and the conference championship with a 3-1 victory!

 

Both R.J. Frost and David Hunter did not get a hit; Frost went 0-for-4 and Hunter 0-for-5.

Kostka once again did not make an appearance, and it is unknown how much of an effect he will have in the final round of this year’s playoffs after already doing so much with that unexpected start and victory.

Three Batters To Watch

 

Seattle:

1. Glynn “Sleeper” Kortkamp - He can get the bat on the ball; he doesn’t necessarily have a lot of power, but Glynn is not immune to hitting a homerun every now and again.

2. “The Velvet Hammer” R.J. Frost - Sure, he’s had a rough postseason, but if there’s any time to turn it on, now would be the time. His thirty-two homeruns and 111 runs batted in during the regular season can’t be ignored by Columbus, no matter how bad of a late October he’s having.

3. Arne Snider - This catcher represents a mixture of Kortkamp and Frost. With a batting average of .296, Snider can put the bat on the ball with a fair amount of success, and can also hit the ball out of the park, leading the team in homeruns. He’s had a little trouble in the postseason like Frost, but when it really comes down to it, there’s no denying Snider’s talent for hitting.

 

Columbus:

1. Neall “The Monster” Isaacson - The 3-4-5 in the Columbus lineup that will likely take the field against Seattle starts with Neall Isaacson, once again a Big Stick nominee for his performance in the regular season. Neall has ten runs batted in through the postseason so far, but his postseason batting average sits one hundred points less than his final seasonal batting average.

2. Antwan Adelaide - The biggest key to the Columbus batting in this postseason has been Antwan. Four homeruns and fifteen RBI lead the team in both categories for the postseason. He’s truly the most dangerous man at the plate during the series, as Alongi, Elston, and Onita will have a hell of a time trying to put him away: his .362 postseason batting average also is tops among the Columbus batters.

3. David Zearge - Finally, Zearge--with two homeruns and eleven runs batted in--caps off a very dangerous section of the Columbus lineup. Zearge is actually hitting the ball better than usual as of late, which gives him an added threat to pitchers. Unfortunately, Columbus’ whole team is not comprised of batters like Zearge, Isaacson, and Adelaide. In fact, their biggest disadvantage lies in the fact that the hitting is somewhat weak with the exception of these three. Whether or not these three can get the job done, we will have to see.

GAME 1

Applewhite Field played host to the first game in the best-of-seven series to decide the 2014 champion. Seattle was returning after being defeated by the Memphis Eels last year in the Championship Series, and Columbus has finally reached the final stage of the playoffs, ironically during the season that they lost star hitter and batting champion Robert Henderson to the Vancouver Vasectomy (who were eliminated by the Memphis Eels, who were eliminated by Columbus. Small world, isn't it?).

 

Moving onto the game, one thing became clear in a hurry: After struggling early in the postseason, Frank Elston has turned things around for himself. And that's a very good thing, as Seattle needed the help from the ace to get through this final seven-game series.

 

With a complete game, Elston allowed only four hits and no runs in one hundred and fifteen pitches, picking up the victory as Seattle was able to bring home five runs in a 5-0 shutout of the Pride, taking the all-important first game of the series.

 

Mikah Zirkwitz drove in two runs in two hits, scoring twice. His two-run homerun in the seventh inning off Felix Rodas brought the Columbus ace off the mound after a disappointing outing.

 

Neall Isaacson, Antwan Adelaide, and Braulio Cerda all made errors in the game for the Pride, and all of them led to at least one run--Adelaide's error set up Mikah's two-run homerun.

 

David Hunter went 0-for-5, while R.J. Frost went 2-for-5, driving in his seventh run of the postseason in the first inning.

 

In an increasingly rare appearance, Peter Kostka went to the mound in the 9th inning, allowing an unearned run on three hits as he finished the inning out with the damage done.

After having the door slammed in their face in Game 1, Columbus was determined to salvage a split in the first two games at home. However, Ann Onita was getting plenty of run support whenever she was on the mound, so the Pride were prepared to scramble for runs wherever they could get them.

 

Unfortunately for the Pride, they didn't quite get the number of runs that they were expecting.

 

Fortunately for the Pride, Yosy Valdez made sure that Seattle didn't get any runs either.

 

Ann Onita suffered her first loss of the postseason in five starts, allowing a single from Jayson Meinke that scored David Zearge from second as her only run in six hits allowed, but that run was enough to sink Seattle as they came up just short, a 2-1 loss to Columbus bringing the series to one game a piece.

 

To no one's surprise, David Hunter was held to a 0-for-3 day, bringing his postseason batting average to an abysmal .149. After a fairly successful Game 1, R.J. Frost was also 0-for-3, staying just above .200 at .218.

Columbus held an early lead, but Seattle rallied back in dramatic fashion, capturing a 4-3 victory on Bill Pazanini’s single to center field, scoring Arne Snider from second and capping off a three run bottom of the 9th.

 

Tipsy had held Seattle down for a good portion of the game, surving eight and one-third innings with four hits allowed and two earned runs. The work of Jose Lopez caused the Frasiers to win, in fact, as the reliable closer who had just scored his sixth save of the postseason in Game 2 collapsed under the pressure that the heart of the Seattle order brought to the table.

 

Jose Lopez only retired one man before the wheels came off, allowing four more hits and two more runs as Seattle had Columbus beat in 17 pitches from Lopez.

 

David Hunter once again had a terrible day, going 0-for-4 as his postseason batting average plummeted once again to .141. R.J. Frost wasn’t much better, at least managing a hit in a 1-for-4 day that took his batting average to .220. That one hit was very important, however, as Ben Gonzales would pinch run for R.J. Frost and eventually represent the game-tying run when Gonzales crossed the plate following a Glynn Kortkamp single to left field.

Seattle was once again donning their rally caps, but the deficit was insurmountable this time as Columbus escaped with a 6-5 victory to even the series at two games a piece.

 

A four-run seventh inning gave Columbus a 6-3 lead and also forced Seattle to come back with limited time remaining. Edwardo Ceniceros hit a two-run pinch-hit homerun to bring the score to 6-5 after eight innings, but Seattle fans went home disappointed after Ben Gonzalez grounded into a game-ending double play.

 

David Hunter’s postseason batting average moved to .147 with a 1-for-4 day, scoring the only time that he reached base. R.J. Frost hit a two-run homerun in the fourth inning off Felix Rodas, his only hit in a 1-for-4 game that raised his postseason batting average a mere .002 points to .222, with one homerun and nine runs batted in so far in the postseason.

 

Jose Lopez was back on track, collecting his seventh save after blowing a save opportunity in Game 3.

Onita’s record suggested that she was a good pitcher, but Game 5 proved that the run support had always been there for her in the past and the absence of such run support, combined with two innings that are sure to give Onita nightmares for seasons to come should it result in a Seattle loss, led to Onita’s second consecutive losing decision as Columbus rolled to a 9-3 victory, going up 3 games to 2 in the series with Seattle.

 

The Pride scored three runs in each the third, fourth, and fifth innings, never duplicating their offensive performance throughout the rest of the game, but not requiring it as Seattle could not get their offense to catch up with the short outburst of runs.

 

After David Tondus went yard on an Onita fastball with one out in the top of the fourth, Onita was finally replaced by John Camp, finishing her abysmal start.

 

Camp would go on to give up three runs himself.

 

David Hunter went 1-for-4, scoring twice. R.J. Frost went 1-for-4.

Columbus had the chance to end the season on a high note with a win over Seattle, and it seemed academic with Tipsy on the mound. However, a three-run eighth inning changed all of that, and Columbus attempted to scramble back down 4-1 but fell short, finishing the game 4-3 as Seattle forced a Game Seven with the chance to win the SFBL Championship on the road.

 

Gesner was given the hook after giving up a 2-run homerun to Manny Donato in the eighth, and after walking R.J. Frost as the next batter, Jesse Holman came on in relief, but Glynn Kortkamp would eventually drive in Frost with a RBI single.

 

The bases were loaded in the bottom of the ninth for the Pride, only down one run, but Antwan Adelaide struck out swinging against Raul Carrera.

 

David Hunter showed signs of life by going for 2-for-5 with one RBI and striking out once, bringing his batting average to .167. R.J. Frost, meanwhile, went 0-for-3, but the walk in the eighth inning would bring him across the plate; Frost’s batting average fell to .214.

Though I think it would've been rather fitting to see the team with the most TSMers come up short again. heh.

Vancouver's leftfielder Robert Henderson will never forget this day. A great season convinced the voters that he is the North-South Big Stick Award winner. 2015 Preview:

 

With another season of the SFBL in the books, R.J. Frost, David Hunter, and Ann Onita have joined the list as TSM players who have won a championship.

 

Free agency will feature Charlie Matthews in a last ditch effort to revitalize his career, David Hunter possibly leaving the League Champion Frasiers for greener pastures (although it can't get much greener than Seattle right now).

 

And we have three new rookies that will get distributed among our twenty-four teams. The expansion teams will be getting the first four draft picks in an attempt to make them better...will our three rookies be lucky enough to find themselves on the Twisters, the Real McCoys, the Freedom Fries or the Crunk Machine?

 

It won't be long before we find all of this out.
