geniusMoment 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2004 That could be stupid. If it is only a minor tear, then he could be back from surgery in a month. I am always worried when a player tries to play through an injury. If he swings wrong once and completely tears the muscles in his hand, he could be done for the year. If he changes his swing to protect his hand he could end up hurting other muscles by putting too much strain on them while trying to protect his thumb. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Supposedly, the Dodgers are interested in Jay Gibbons, and if the Os trade Gibbons to LA I will be really sad. It's no surprise that new Dodgers owner Frank McCourt is backing off his pledge to land an impact hitter: McCourt has mandated a $100 million payroll, according to an industry source, and the Dodgers are at $98 million. The Dodgers still want to trade a pitcher for a hitter, and they're believed to be interested in Orioles RF Jay Gibbons, according to the Los Angeles Times. But the Orioles seem unlikely to trade Gibbons, a player three years away from becoming a free agent, for LHP Odalis Perez, a free agent at the end of the season, unless they also received a young pitcher such as Class AAA RHP Joel Hanrahan in return. When asked if he liked Perez, an Orioles official said yes, but added, "I like (RHP) Edwin Jackson better."

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2004 Supposedly, the Dodgers are interested in Jay Gibbons, and if the Os trade Gibbons to LA I will be really sad. Jay Gibbons is a decent hitter but he's probably at his peak. He's a sub-par fielder. I don't know what the Dodgers obsession is with half-decent hitters. They need a MONSTER bat. Odalis Perez would be a big mistake however. He allowed 28 home runs for the Dodgers last season. Putting him in Camden Yards, a big home run park, could spell disaster. And if the Dodgers part with Edwin Jackson for Gibbons, the Dodgers are nuts. Eric Chavez is supposedly signing a 6 year $66 million extention with the A's. No surprise. With three quarters of the Yankee infield signed for the next several years, the Yankees have no room for another free agent acquisition. Chavez is the best position player the A's have had throughout this run, so of course the A's will do their best to keep him.
Bored 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2004 Really no shocker at all as even though talk stalled recently there was never any sign that it wouldn't get done. Jermaine Dye's and Jim Mecir's bad contracts are off the payroll after this year so they are able to do this and they did finally have to keep someone. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2004 Its official. Eric Chavez signs a six year contract extension with the Oakland A's. Great move. He's won three gold gloves, but most people don't realize how great a fielder Chavez is. And he can maul the ball.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2004 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1764019 SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Texas Rangers minor leaguer Jason Hart has been diagnosed with a non-cancerous brain tumor and is expected to miss the season. The team said Saturday that Hart's condition was confirmed during a series of tests after he reported to the Rangers' minor league camp last week. Hart, a first baseman and outfielder, is expected to undergo surgery in the next few weeks to have the tumor removed. General manager John Hart, no relation to the player, said the team was "shocked and saddened to hear of Jason's diagnosis." He said the Rangers' medical staff believes the tumor was diagnosed early, "and we all hope we see Jason back on the field as soon as possible." Hart batted .252 and hit a team-leading 21 home runs in 137 games last year for the Rangers' triple-A team in Oklahoma. He appeared in 10 games with the Rangers in 2002. Texas acquired him from Oakland in January 2002 with pitcher Mario Ramos, outfielder Ryan Ludwick and catcher Gerald Laird in exchange for infielder Carlos Pena and pitcher Mike Venafro. Hopefully Jason Hart can recover from this. The report seems optimistic.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2004 Josh Hamilton out for the year....... ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Devil Rays outfielder Josh Hamilton was suspended for the 2004 season for violating baseball's drug policy. Hamilton, the first pick in the 1999 amateur draft, already had been given a 30-day suspension on Feb. 17. Under the new suspension announced Friday, he isn't eligible for reinstatement until spring training next year, the commissioner's office said. Hamilton hasn't played since July 2002 because of injuries and unspecified personal issues. He received a $3.96 million signing bonus out of high school. In 251 minor league games, he's hit .295 with 33 homers and 166 RBI. "All we can do is hope that Josh Hamilton will be ready to participate in our 2005 spring training," Devil Rays general manager Chuck Lamar said. "We all know the God-given baseball talent that he has. ... Hopefully, he can fulfill his dream of playing in the major leagues." Hamilton last played July 10, 2002, for Class A Bakersfield. Last year, he took six weeks off for personal reasons during spring training and later was granted permission to leave the organization for the rest of the season to handle unspecified personal problems. When he reported to Double-A Orlando on May 3, Hamilton said that during the leave he took in spring training he sought counseling for depression caused by a serious illness in his family. According to the rules of baseball's drug program, a major league player must test positive at least twice for drugs of abuse before being suspended, with drugs of abuse subject to suspension defined as a group that includes cocaine, LSD, opiates, Ecstasy, the "date rape" drug GHB and PCP. Players who fail to comply with their treatment program a second time can be suspended for 25-to-50 days. Players who fail to comply a fourth time can be suspended for at least one year. A fifth failure results in additional discipline by the commissioner. Tests for drugs of abuse are conducted only if the joint management-union health policy advisory committee determines there is reasonable cause. Labeled as a can't-miss prospect when he became the first high school player drafted No. 1 overall since Alex Rodriguez, Hamilton told the St. Petersburg Times in January that he was ready to resume his career. He declined to discuss the personal problems that sidelined him in 2003, but sounded confident about his chances of bouncing back strong. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1763326

treble 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2004 Expos back on English-language television MONTREAL (AP) -- The Montreal Expos are back on English-language television in Canada. The team agreed Wednesday on a deal with The Score Television Network to show between 25 and 35 regular-season Expos games as part of the network's national English-language package. It will begin with the 2004 home opener against Philadelphia on April 23 but the majority of games will be road contests. The Expos did not have a television deal last season and have been on the air sporadically for most of the last decade. Since 2000, only a handful of games have been shown each season, mostly on French-language television. Claude Delorme, vice-president of business affairs for the Expos, said the ``agreement provides the team with the best television coverage since 1996.'' TheScore doesn't have a lot of money, so they'll probably just be picking up the feed from the other team's broadcaster, but that doesn't really matter. Just more baseball for me to watch. Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2004 Wee! I actually see more than just the Bl... Jays. Damn Toronto Jays for changing their name. I still wish to call them the freaking Blue Jays. The Score doesn't do a bad job with televising games, I found. Plus, I really hoping that the Expos kick people's asses hard. Maybe even win the Series. Just to stick it to everyone. treble 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2004 They're still officially called the Blue Jays, just their uniforms will just say 'Jays'. And I think the only original stuff I've ever seen theScore broadcast themselves are Roadrunners AHL games and the CBL games last year. I don't see any reason why they'd do Expos games themselves when they can save cash by picking up some local broadcast from the States.

I want to know why Toronto had that stupid T with with bird last year. That was just dumb. Never should've dumped the look they had in the World Series years with the neon-looking lettering. EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2004 How can a baseball team not get local coverage? No wonder the Expos wanted to leave Canada. That is why the baseball world hates Jeffrey Loria. How the hell can you own a team and not provide television coverage? But Loria did it, and somehow Montreal is no longer a capable city for baseball. I maintain that if baseball had owners that cared, Montreal would be every bit as suitable a host to major league baseball as Vegas, Washington, or San Juan. In 2002, Florida outdrew Montreal by just over 1,000 over the course of the entire season, and no one suggested Miami couldn't host baseball.
