It simply means not knowing and from the tone of your previous posts I thought you were speaking on the Marlins situation without knowing the facts. I've seen it done on this board too many times to count, as well as many times on ESPN (everyday during the playoffs by Dan Shanoff in the Daily Quickie). Nothing personal, I just can't stand it when people think they are funny or cool by making payroll jokes about the Marlins when they have no idea what they are talking about. Obviously you do know the situation and I was a bit unjustly strong in my tone, but you could probably see where I was coming from. Actually yeah, and sorry I got on the defensive. I'm sure it did kind of come off like I had a problem with the Marlins but I really don't. I was very impressed with them and still am with the moves they made. I just hope they can get a stadium to stay in the upper road. I'm not a big fan of the being accused but I do understand how what I said might have came out very ignorant of the situation. No harm, no foul on my end. Hope it's all cool.

That slugging percentage is the tenth best mark of all time. His most similar players at his age are Willie Mays and Duke Snider. He's just entered his prime. Whoever signs him will get a heck of a player. 2. Ivan Rodriguez Rodriguez has once again managed to price himself out of the market. The number 1 team is legally unable to resign him. The number 2 team (Orioles) found a cheaper option. In any case, I-Rod is a career 304/344/488 hitter. He can steal an occasional base, but not at a high percentage. He's very good defensively. He's 32. One point in Rodriguez's favor, he's the ONLY catcher of any value left on the market. 3. Rafael Palmeiro Palmeiro just keeps hitting. Palmeiro always provides 30+ home runs and has NEVER missed significant time due to injury. Teams should temper their expectations if he leaves Texas, but he'd be a nice piece to a team needing a short term solution at first base. Personally, I think the Cardinals should be on their knees for this guy. 4. Sidney Ponson Ponson finally put it all together last season, posting a 3.75 ERA between the O's and the Giants. He improved his ERA in 2002 as well, and he's entering his prime, so the improvement looks real. Ponson has trouble with the long ball, so he should avoid extreme hitters' parks. 5. Greg Maddux He's slipping, but he still never walks anyone, and his K/BB ratio is quite good. Put a good defense behind him, and you've got a solid 2-3 quality starter. Plus there's a good chance he'll pick up his 300th win. 6. Ugueth Urbina Good peripherals, and actually better than his overall ERA would indicate. A good pitcher for a team needing a solid closer. 7. Raul Mondesi For teams needing an inexpensive corner outfielder. Mondesi has a decent bat, good speed, and a cannon arm. 8. Juan Gonzalez Injury concerns and attitude problems have depreciated his value. As such, he could be a bargain pickup for a low payroll team. When healthy, he hits well. 9. Eric Young Still chugging at 37. Second basemen are hard to come by, so Young still has value in this market. He draws walks and steals bases. Freak stat: He hit a career high 15 HRs in 404 at bats in Milwaukee. After he was traded to San Francisco, he failed to hit another one. 10. Travis Lee He won't be a superstar, but teams needing a stopgap at first could do worse. Lee is an 800 OPS hitter, and he's a terrific athlete and fielder. He'll be of some help in the bullpen and if Julio has another meltdown he could fill in since he was the closer in Milwaukee. And Jason Johnson will probably have a good year pitching in a pitchers park like Detroit.

Its not a feel good story of the year type of thing. I just happen to be diabetic myself, and its good to see a fellow diabetic succeed. Besides, unless a player/team is directly competing against the Phillies in a given game, I have no reason not to cheer for them. I guess I just have a more positive attitude about sports.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see them pick up Maddux or Ponson, as I can't see them risking this rotation. They have no minor league depth whatsoever and little value for trades. The Padres are quietly building themselves a decent pitching staff. Besides Wells, they have Ismael Valdes, Sterling Hitchcock, Adam Eaton, Kevin Jarvis, Brian Lawrence, Jake Peavy, and Ben Howard. If 5 of those 8 pan out, they could have a decent pitching staff. And on a side note, David Wells and Jamie Moyer are surprisingly similar pitchers, statistically. Al, type 1 or type 2? Myself or Johnson? If you're asking about me, type 1.

Ponson, I can definitely see them picking up, if the O's don't get him first. I personally didn't want to see him go. I hated that he was always stuck with our B-squad playing behind him during the regular season. Yeah, he blew up in the playoffs, but the whole team with the exception of Alfonzo, Schmidt and Herges were playing like crap and there Marlins were red hot.
