Looking Ahead to Royal Rumble 2004

Recommended Posts

But with the exception of 93, 95, 96, 98, 99, 02 and 03...Most rumble have a handfull of favorites.

At the very least, 2000 was either Rock or Big Show (with everyone predicting Rock would eventually have the title shot) and everyone and their mother picked either Rock or Austin in 2001, with the other one winning the WWF title at No Way Out.

1991 was a given, especially after Warrior lost the title to Slaughter, that Hogan would win.

So that's three more with a narrowed field to about two. Most Rumbles ARE predictible - 10 out of 16 (at the very least) had fields of possible winners at 2 or less.

Jason

Edit: The case could also be made that it was either Perfect or Hogan in 1990, which would make it 11/16.

Before 1992, The title or a Title Shot was never up for grabs so it wasn't out of the question that a surprise could come about (I.E 1989 with Studd, when everyone pegged Hogan, Savage, DiBiase and others).

1990? Hogan, Warrior, Perfect, DiBiase were all favorites

1991...True it was all Hogan although going into it...There was some Savage Sentiments...with the Warrior angle and all.

I'm talking from a " Quasi-Mark" standpoint....where obviously Warlord wasn't winning the 91 rumble but there were arguements.

2001...They sold everyone pretty equally and they actually made for about the Illusion of about 5 legit contenders( Austin, Rock, Kane, UT, Rikishi)

But really, did anyone that knew what was going on really think RIKISHI would win the thing in 2001? Undertaker? Kane? Not really.

1991, even with the Savage sentiment, means that there were two possible winners, which is equal to or less than two.

And, I'll admit that 1990 I am probably wrong, but thats why I didn't exactly stand strong behind those convictions in the first place (it's an edited in thing and said with "the case could be made").

It's all about perception really.

The Rumble has ALWAYS been WWE's biggest night after Mania. Simply because it's the only time they can really draw that Casual/Non fan market merely because of Betting possibilities of the Rumble.

So the idea should be that in cases like 2001, they have multiple "percheived" threats to win...

I agree that this is the goal of WWE in this regard.

But they have failed more than half the time to even have this perception.

And, the point of this thread at the beginning is a question for us, as TSM board, to guess who might win and now the question is about how many times we have thought about who could win later in the year (near January). And, especially for TSM people (internet geeks like us), we have little doubt as to who will win going into the PPV more than half the time (almost 62.5% of the time). That means WWE has failed at making the Rumble match unpredictible to us. And, I'd say that a little under half the time (if not half the time) everyone, mark or no, knows going in.

well the marks unlike us don't realize HHH is demanding pretty much to have Orton/HHH for the title at mania...

so they have that "element" of surprise waiting for them...Although I *KNOW* Orton will be given that "Who can stop Orton at the rumble?" push and he draws 28 and stands there and just shoves the last guy(RVD I'm sure) out because that is all he can do.

I'm still disapointed that this year they didn't have Flair just walk out to the ring when #3's turn was up...

If someone from Smackdown win this time too then that would be so fucked up.

Err...why? If they alternate which brand wins it every year, even the slowest marks are going to catch on to that sort of thing.

I see the possible contenders at the moment as:

SD: Benoit, Eddie, Cena.

Raw: HHH, Orton, Kane.

What with Kurt's new surgery needs, they'll probably figure that the Raw main event scene is a safer playing field, and most likely go with Trips. But I'll be hoping till the bitter end that Eddie gets the nod.

Matt Morgan will probably win RR since he's getting a monster push.

Not a chance. Even WWE won't put someone that untested in a title match at WMXX. Lesnar got the nod last year because:

a) He'd already proven he could draw (a bit) and pick up crowd heat.

b) He'd been in a successful ME already, at Summerslam.

c) He's actually got talent.

d) The crowd wanted him to win it and main event with Angle.

It's SurSer already and Morgan hasn't even had a televised singles match. He is not winning the Rumble. Though I wouldn't put a strong showing out of the question.

I smell an Undertaker win, because he's never won it. I can see Vince giving it to 'Taker for his loyalty over the years, and because he's nearing the end of his career.

I doubt they'll have Lesnar win again. As much as I love Benoit and Guerrero, I can't see them winning ANYTHING big in WWE. Angle? Maybe. If Triple H loses to Goldberg at SSeries, there's a possibility of him winning the Rumble.

My money's on Taker.

Ray took the words right out of my mouth. This is almost word for word what I was going to reply with.

Taker gets buried tonight, Taker returns and wins the Rumble in his "old school" character.

Oh, and it will suck.

Cena wins and will be the iron man of the Rumble.

No he won't. If HHH is going to be in it and win it, he'll be the iron man. If not, expect Orton to be the "Iron Man".....

You think WWE will ever EXPAND the rumble to 40?

With Such a THICK roster i could see WWE thinking that by adding 10 more slots...It would be a fresh thing and add more interest in the event...

You know whats scary? Double Posting....and my bad spelling from time to time.

Kane lasted 56 Minutes, so really, thats a really good time. It's not like the Iron Man has been in the ring 20 minutes.

::Wanted Kane to win at RR 01, but knew there was NO CHANCE IN HELL::

I doubt it, but even if Cena would win, they would likely use the "Iron Man" thing to put over some one else.

Although it bugs me that they usually don't do anything like make the "iron man" be some one they want to push and use that as a starting point.

It's almost as annoying as making it such a big deal about being number 1, when number 2 starts the match at the exact same time (Last year's with Jericho and HBK).

I actually like the 90 second rule in the RR. 2 minutes is just too long to Bradshaw and Goldust try to push each other out of the ring. And it irritated me to no end in '02 when the intervals kept changing. It would be 1:45, then 2:30 even 3 minutes. 90 seconds seems the best route to go.

I think Orton's taking it this year, he's riding a push from hell not seen since '99-2000.

I predict a surprise mystery entrant will win.

I predict the winner, to become a THREE time champion...

BRUNO SAMMARTINO!

In seriousness though, I'd like to see Cena or Guerrero from Smackdown win it. For Raw...eh, Jericho or someone.

Don't care what WWE thinks, that's who I want.

I'd like to see one of the following win:

Rob Van Dam

Chris Jericho

Chris Benoit

Booker T

Orton and Triple H can feud without the title being involved. Same with Goldberg and Lesnar (ugh...). Angle vs. Benoit at 'Mania (with Benoit going over) would be awesome. I'd do it as a face/face match, though. As for the Raw side, I'd like to see RVD vs. Jericho. Yes, it's been done a lot, but I feel it could draw well at 'Mania (with the World title involved). Of course, Jericho would have to built up again first (maybe with a victory over Goldberg).

Speaking of the Rumble this year...if they do decide to have Surprise Entrants this year (doubtful with the split and large talent pool, but still) who would you like to see make appearances?

With the way things are building up right now, i'm afraid that Orton will be put over in the Royal Rumble since WWE will try their best to get this untalented bag of shit over with the fans.
