Months of rumors are now offical...

According to guitarist Dean DeLeo and bassist Robert DeLeo, Stone Temples Pilots have now officially broken up.

No reasons was given for the breakup but one could believe it involves Scott Weiland's new project "Velvet Revolver."

Well this definitely sucks. I was a pretty big fan of STP. Although I didn't purchase their later releases such as Number 4 and Shangri-La-Dee-Da, I did enjoy what I heard from those records, and I own Core, Purple, and Tiny Music.... They were an amazing band, one of the best rock groups of the '90s in my opinion. I haven't heard anything by Velvet Revolver outside of the first single, "Set Me Free", but I wasn't too impressed. Still, I have hope since I love(d) Guns 'N Roses, and Weiland's a great, charismatic singer who's great when he can stay out of jail/rehab.

Oh god..The last couple STP albums are so incredibly, terribly, unquestionably bad. They took the basic rock formula from Core, and Purple, only made every single song fall flat like a second-rate quiche.

How do you guys think Velvet Revolver is going to turn out? The songwriting will have to fall in Scott's lap, as the good GNR shit was mostly taken care of by Axl and Izzy. And, IMHO, if you have heard one Slash riff you have basically heard em all.

While this does suck, it comes as no surprise. I've been an STP since Core came out in '92 and felt their last good record was No. 4. It gets shit on by alot of people, but I love it, particularly "Atlanta."

I agree with you 100% on Atlanta. That is one of my favorite songs ever.

This is a surprise to me, not because they broke up, but I didn't know they were still together.
