Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

Recommended Posts

Guest Kamui

I just picked up my copy of MK:DD!! today, and I've been playing it non-stop since I got home. Either believe the hype (if you're reading EGM) or don't believe the naysayers (if you're reading IGN) because this game flat-out ROCKS. The control is spot-on, the courses are great, the graphics are really great, and this is just another one of those plain 'ol fun Nintendo games. It's nice to have something like this to break up all the RPGs, you know?

And I haven't even *begun* to play multiplayer yet, let alone LAN or online (warppipe.com for those who don't know- still waiting on my broadband adapter to come in). Once I get some friends over who have this game and we start connecting our Gamecubes, I don't think I'll be leaving the house for a while- and that's not even counting online play, whenever the Warppipe guys get it out. Bravo Nintendo!

I was wondering if anyone was going to start a thread about this. Most stores around here aren't getting the game in until tomorrow, but I definitely plan on picking it up. I have been wanting a GameCube for a long time now, being a Nintendo fanatic for the last 15 or 16 years since I got an NES, but I never did get a Cube for one reason or another. Now that it's at $99 with the kick-ass Zelda bonus disc, I plan on purchasing the system along with Mario Kart later this week. Zelda and Metroid Prime are better games, but Mario Kart's right up there and most importantly, it has a great multiplayer mode. I usually agree with EGM's reviews, and they were spot-on this time. I don't know what Gamespot was smoking, but then again they gave MK64 a 6.4, so what do they know? Every GameCube owner out there should buy this game, or at the very least give it a rental.

I'll have to reaquire a GameCube when my disability goes through as well. I'm a big Mario Kart mark so $99 for a brand new GameCube(or less perhaps when my disability does go through) along with maybe by then it being $40...I'll grab that. Maybe I'll grab WM XIX too when all this happens

I got it yesterday. It seems cool and IGN is right, it is a lot like MK64(but that isn't bad if you ask me).

My team is Daisy & Koopa Troopa.

I'm a light cart person, so my team generally switches between the six light characters depending on who's special items I feel like using at the moment. However, the team I use most often is Baby Mario & Diddy Kong.

The problem I had with their review wasn't that IGN said it was like MK64 (it is- but again, that's not neccesiarly a bad thing. Not EVERY title has to be this huge evolutionary leap over what came before), but that the author of the review spent way too much time taking badly hidden cheapshots at Nintendo's general gaming practices than actually, I don't know, REVIEWING THE GAME.

It just read like a Sony or Microsoft fanboy's anti-Nintendo arguement- "The games are too kiddy, too simple, no online play, WHY WON'T NINTENDO CHANGE WITH THE TIMES?!?", etc., etc. And that's all fine and good if you're a Sony or M$ fanboy, I guess, but as someone who owns all three systems and just wants to know how the game is, the review just came off as annoying, mean-spirited, and uninformative. I can't even imagine how a Nintendo fanboy must have felt!

I'm glad to hear this. I was getting worried about Nintendo (especially because I have F-Zero GX and I've lost all interest in it). But IGN, GameSpot and GamePro were all mean to MK: DD. So this post is a sight for sore eyes.

Everybody likes Mario Kart. Even people that hardly play games at all. It's just simly one of the funnest games out there ever.

BTW, what type of music do they have for this one? I'd love to have some fast moving songs this time around.

That is the ever-loving truth. I've never met someone who didn't like Mario Kart (any version). Hell, my friggin' mother liked Mario Kart. It's simply a social phenomenon.

Here's my question, in the same vein but not necessarily about MK.

I sold my GameCube this April, not because I was sick of it, but because I was poor. I still have a Wavebird, Prime, Wrestlemania X8, and Madden '03. At this point, does it pay for me to get the Cube again? Or, more accurately, is there enough good stuff for it to make it WORTH the investment?

I think the IGN writers for the gamecube section are too tough for there games, or either think that X-Box and PS2 are better. Simple can be fun.

The two person-karts add a lot more then I expected. I had the notion going in that the person not doing the steering would just be sitting there without any challenge or nothing to do. That really isn't the case though. When you can concentrate completely on using the weapons, you can really develop more strategy on when/how to use them instead of having to worry about driving first and using the weapons second. It makes every kart a lot better because 100 percent effort can be put into both facets (driving and using weapons). The cooperation on power slides and starts is also a nice touch.

IGN really made it sound like Double Dash was nearly an exact clone of Mario Kart 64. They are similiar (obviously) but Double Dash has more then enough upgrades to make it worth getting. Heck, it has more upgrades then the newest version of Madden or any other annual sports title has. The two person kart really adds another dimension, especially when you two players are control one kart. A bunch of the new characters are nice additions, as is the ability to pick your kart. The two new battle modes are decent. The game also runs a lot faster in four player mode then MK64.

Double Dash is as fun and as addictive as the previous Mario Kart titles which is good enough for me....

I hated Mario Kart 64.

BLASPHEMY!!!!!!

I could play that game contently for like 4hrs straight. Hearing Toad go "Ow,ow,ow,ow" was just music to my ears

Yep, MK64 was easily about a million times better just because it was 4 player. That game was addictive.

I just got it today, but have been playing it every night since it was released.

Every night for the past week, my friends and I all go over to one house and play 16 player coop....it's beyond awesome. My only problem with the game is that in those types of multiplayer situations, the computer randomly assigns players and karts to everyone. A small gripe, but it teaches you to be good with just about anyone.

I got it today. My original thoughts are in the Wal-Mart deal thread. Long story short, I adore this game and it's the most fun I've had gaming in years. I've played games for 17 years, but kinda lost interest when the Dremcast died. This game has almost singlehandedly restored my interest. Now, for an update. So far, I've been playing for about 4 hours (not counting the hour or more I spent on TMNT, F-Zero, and Sonic Heroes on the demo disc) and I have to stop for a minute just to rest my hands. It's so hard to put down, though. I have beaten all 3 cups on 50cc and 100cc, unlocked 6 cars and the Special Cup, done every track (including Special) on Time Trial, and... I think that's it. I fully expect to play for at least another couple hours, but I have to start up on that Zelda disc sometime... I'm actually contemplating staying home tonight, on a FRIDAY night, just to play GameCube. I'm a loser.

Agreed. I don't know why, but I just don't like that game. I loved the original Mario Kart and played that game to death but for whatever reason, the magic was just gone with Mario Kart 64. I just have no desire to play Double Dash because of it. There are two games that nearly crippled my interest in video games: Donkey Kong 64 and Mario Kart 64.

Although I must say the battle mode in MK 64 was much better.

Two beefs about this game.

No hop...what in the hell were they thinking?

Second.

Playin 150cc, when hit a guy, it seems like they no sell it, and continue to go on, and it gets a little frustrating.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

Rainbow Road is probably one challenging track, especially when all those speed bursts on the spiral part of the section. It gets pretty clustered when a few banana peels, and up-side-down question blocks in the way

Okay, this is why I hated MK64:

First of all, it had the "preferential item treatment" that DD has. Guys in the back are getting stars, those killer blue shells, lightning bolts. In the front you get... Uh.. Bananna peels. It's almost cause enough to make you hang back and get some good shit then try and retake the lead again.

This on it's own is fine. I don't mind it, where MK64 is totally broken however is:

They decided to give the really skilled drivers at this game a challenge by having your rival AI character (the one that's almost always coming in behind you) drive faster you can. I must have plunged five shells into Luigi this race and he's back again. Argh!

DD doesn't have the latter problem. I can be lightyears ahead of the guy in second place, lapping past the poor dude in last place and hitting him with a weapon just for fun. Giving wild, game-unbalancing stuff to the people in the rear was enough. Trying to "keep it challenging" for the pros by letting the cars cheat so they can always stay right on your bumper was too much for me.

Yeah, the fact that the AI doesn't cheat like that is a HUGE improvement for the one-player mode. Still, the item thing I'd keep in if I had the option- this is primarily meant to be played as a multi-player party game, and having spent most of the long weekend playing with lots of people (got up to 7 in total- I love the LAN feature!), you really start to appreciate it.

Simply put, a party game should be one where gamers of varying skill levels can all compete and stay in the game. Double Dash's item balance feature means that a casual player who's been playing the game for a half-hour has a much better chance of winning than they normally would against someone like me who's been playing the game constantly since they got it, unlocking everything. This is really important for a party game, and it works very well in practice. I agree it's annoying in single-player mode, though.

Well, yeah, one player mode blew. But who the hell plays MK for one player? 4-player mode race and battle beats the shit out of anything from the original.
