Final Fantasy XII Details

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/441/441084p1.html is the media conference held yesterday.

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/441/441293p1.html is an exclusive Q&A about the game with the creators.

Set in the FFT universe, a war drama (I love this kind of stuff- I am a Gundam fan, after all).....holy fuck, does this sound sweet! When they said this was gonna be something different, they sure weren't kidding.

I'll reserve further judgement until I hear about the battle system and more about the story, but so far I'm impressed, I must admit it.

People are getting too hung-up on the character designs. READ THE ARTICLES. The actual tone of the game and the look of the enviornment is nothing like FFVII-X.

The most encouraging thing is that romance plays a MUCH smaller role in this game, and the theme is war (and probably why it sucks). This is a GOOD thing, because as much as I like romance I'm all romanced out after 8 and especially X.

Yeah, the character designs are same 'ol, because that's what sells in Japan. Oh well. The rest of the game is still plenty different, if you take the time to READ before replying.

I am sad they are taking the focus away from teen angst and romance.

I will still give it a chance and probably love it though.

GOTY 2004!

Well, don't you think change is good every once in a while? I loved 8 and X, but I need a break sometimes (especially with X really extended into two games). I'm sure XIII will be right back to that angst and romance we all love. :P

If it is still cinematic, dramatic and emotional then I won't mind. I have faith it will be. I just really like the angst and romance.

It's Final Fantasy. If it's NOT cinematic, dramatic, and emotional Square will have a national riot on their hands over there.

WAR! Heroes! This better have a fucking hero who wants to save the day and can't care less about what a bitch thinks of him because he's to busy being a badass.

Uh....have you ever watched a Japanese anime dealing with war? It never, ever glamorizes it, and the hero is always a reluctant one who's trying to make peace. I seriously doubt FFXII will alter from that formula, simply because there are very, very, very few Japanese people who support the glamorizing of war.

I have watched PLENTY of Anime. I'm not talking about glamorizing war. I'm talking about a hero who is a hero. And if he's a shit kicking badass so be it. But I don't want some whiney fuck who is like "I don't want to fight! I hate everyone! Why must you all be so mean to me!" I want someone that is like "I'll save the day! I have no fear!"

I mean come on. Kenshin isn't a wuss. He doesn't kill but he isn't scared of anyone. Same with Vash. And look at the main hero of Beserk for god's sake....total badass. We need a main character like that....they're right........rugged...that's the key.

The whole "FF heroes have angst" thing is overhyped anyway. Squall is like the only one who is unsure of himself for a long period of time. Cloud is kinda disinterested at first but gets into it within a few hours and except for one part where he is messed up in the head, is happy to be leader. Tidus and Zidane wanted to help people. Even Squall wanted to fight, he was a SeeD! He was just inclosed and didn't know why he had to be leader(though he rarely openly complained).

Okay, I get what you're saying now. I think you might have that type of hero, since in the interview the creators commented that the character's look was originally supposed to be more manly, so that suggests what kind of tone the character will take. I thought you meant like a gruzzled soldier-type character and I was just pointing out that would fly in the face of Japanese morality and what is acceptable to them, but yeah, thanks for clarifying yourself.

And Sakura, I agree on the Squall thing. If he didn't want to fight, he wouldn't have enlisted in SeeD. People take his very inclosed nature as being whiney and/or uninterested in fighting, which isn't true, because again, if he didn't wanna fight, he wouldn't have joined SeeD. Pretty simple, I think.

Definitely interesting... Seems like the series will in fact be taking a different direction.

I do love though, how they avoided the comment of how Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance both were listed along with the other Final Fantasy's release dates.

Also, I find it interesting that THIS (FFXII) is the game that Yasumi Matsuno, Hideo Minaba and the gang that created FFT were thinking about eight years ago. So it'll be interesting to see what they have up their sleeves.

Anyone find it interesting how Vagrant Story was also brought up? I mean, it's kinda funny how all these games have some influence on FFXII. Maybe just a little more than influence, perhaps?

Shall be interesting to see what this FF will bring.

I was pretty much un-wowed by Tactics as a whole, so this news that it's set in Tactics, music is done by the guy who did Tactics, and it's being directed by the guy who did Tactics, isn't THRILLING~! to hear.

Then again, the reduced-love-and-teen-angst-in-story is a good sign. A very good sign. The farther away we get from FF8, the better. :P

We'll see.

The fruity kid had me worried, but it does appear this potentially could be good. I shall sit and hope it starts a revolution of good FFs where sappy Titanic-esque love stories were ruining the show.

I don't know what's sillier in this thread, Sakura talking about how much she likes the angst when there's far better angst fiction out there than what Square has done, or Duo's lessons of "anime can teach you everything you need to know about Japan."

I didn't say it could. But Square's primary market overlaps with anime fans- anime fans buy RPGs, and RPG fans buy anime. It's just how it works, and it's why themes in so many RPGs and animes are so similar. That's obviously what I meant by the Japanese market rejecting it- it would be suicide to go with a theme like I described, because it's simply not what the fanbase wants.

I hope (finally) that the party doesn't have to save the world.

I'm sick of saving the fscking world.

Someone give me a Suikoden non-saving-the-world plot anyday.

Oh and rumor has it that there are judges in this game. The red cards from FFTA are the (by far) worst part of the game. Losing the game because you used a totoma when they banned full screen attacks (and losing 3 hours of play) is frustrating.

The judges aren't going to be involved in the battle system like they are in TA, I don't believe. The interview seems to point to the judges just being characters in the game (and possible enemies?).

Vash = sales, but I'll have to wait for Planet gunsmoke for that.

How about the Minmay defense in this game? :D

Geez, didn't you save inbetween fights? No way any FFTA battles went longer than 3 hours.

Anyways, re judges in FFXII:

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

They're actually called something else in the game. Black Knights or something similar, and they're hunting down the main characters. I read some more details off a link from Wednesday's Penny Arcade. Think the actual article was at gamespot.

Anyways, FFT was awesome. If they make a game even close to FFT's level of awesome, I shall be happy.

No I didn't save in between fights in FFTA because barring a red card for the main character it is IMPOSSIBLE to die!

I mean seriously if one loses all their characters on a non-lawless area, doesn't the mission just get failed, no game over?

Just a quick question here. Will this be the first game really developed by Square/Enix? I know some games have come out since the merger, I'm just not sure how much imput the new guys have had yet.

Thank God for them going back to Old School (medieval times). Now, all I need is Moogles and Chocobos to mark out for and I'm set. :D

Okay:

1) It's not medieval times in the traditional sense. It's more meditterian (sp?)- the group went to TURKEY for influence. And there's lots of technological elements to it.

2) Okay, the Chocobos in this game look (almost) SCARY. I do NOT want to see what a Moogle would look like in this game!

If you want old-school medieval, go buy FF9. As much as I dislike that game, there's old-school medieval for you.
