Midway Arcade Treasures

Recommended Posts

I've seen reviews for the X-Box version, and I believe it's coming out for PS2 as well (maybe Gamecube, I'm not sure).

However, take a look at the roster of games...

720

Blaster

Bubbles

Defender

Defender II

Gauntlet

Joust

Joust 2

KLAX

Marble Madness

Paperboy

Rampage

Rampart

RoadBlasters

Robotron 2084

Root Beer Tapper

Satan's Hollow

Sinistar

Smash TV

SPLAT!

Spy Hunter

Super Sprint

Toobin'

Vindicators

Robotron, Toobin', Rampage, both Jousts and Defenders, Paperboy, and Smash TV? Haven't played the others, but I'm sold on it already.

Slightly on-topic, what would it take for Mutant League Football/Hockey to be re-released for the new gen systems, or even remade?

On that topic, they needed a Mutant League Baseball and Basketball.

I have PS1 classic collection called Party Pack which has Toobin, Super Sprint, Smash Tv, Klax. I am surprised that the complete collection is on one disc now, before it was spread out on 4 discs.

*Yawns*

Emulators can already provide you with all that, I'm not paying anything above five bucks for console ports of substandard games (although Smash TV and spyhunter are good).

Now if namco released Mappy for the ps2...

Funny thing is that I got this game last night when I saw it at Target. Was going to create a thread, but I figured nobody would care.

Gauntlet, Smash TV, RoadBlaster, Joust. Good times.

And what I love about Gauntlet is that, unlike the PS2's Dark Legacy, your energy diminishes as you are playing -- they way it is meant to be.

Although hitting the triangle button is a bit different that plopping in another quarter.

Best Buy is pimping an Activision classics PS2 game in their flyer -- if it's what I think it is Pitfall 2 will be included. I loved that game as a kid -- first time I ever "beat" a game...

I have the Activision collection and it rules the school... EXCEPT that some games were left out due to a dropped feature. There are empty slots for about 8 games on the "rack" of cartridges that were SUPPOSED to be "earned" by doing something online, but they dropped that feature so there's no Cosmic Ark, No Escape!, Firefighter, or about 5 other games that were mostly made by Imagic. (Firefighter SUCKS but Cosmic Ark rules and No Escape! was okay.

As for the new Williams/Midway disc, does anyone know what titles from the previous four collections didn't make the cut? The only games I know are missing for sure are Crystal Castles and Gauntlet II.

Question: Is the PS2 version out yet? I haven't seen it.

Pitfall 2 isn't in the Activision collection for PS1. The PS2 one I'm not sure of though, it may have far more. Is Pitfall 2 Atari 2600?

It feels all wrong playing on a computer to me. So haul your jaded, emulating, cheap ass out of this thread if you aren't going to add anything to the conversation. :P (kidding)

I'd rather be able to select from a menu on a PS2 disc than boot up my computer, run the emulator, download and run the ROMs, and wrestle with my keyboard to play a game.

And...you never played GAUNTLET??? Wow.

Is that the precursor to that arcade/DC game Legends?

Remember that I have no arcades around here and growing up I hardly ever went to any.

You actually shut down your computer? Loser <g>

Personally emulation action is allright by me. What's even better for me too is that I can take my disc of emulated games to my workplace, load them onto one of our computers, then hook the computer up to one of our fine digital projectors and play classic arcade games on a six foot screen

Yes I know, I have it so rough

I have to agree with the last guy. You're only two years younger than me, and you never played Gauntlet? Turn in your gamer's badge now

Seriously though, if you're big on the old school arcade action, you should enjoy it. It was one of the first arcade games to utilize computerized voices, along with the likes of the Star Wars vector game (not counting the Dragon's Lair game, that's a different boat entirely), and of course it'll seem antiquated, but still a fun game

...unless you get stuck on one of those seemingly neverending levels, then it's not so fun

Yes, it's out on the PS2. It's called Activision Anthology and I've had it since this time last year. It's also got Pitfall 2 on there, which fucking ROCKS because it's never been officially emulated before now.

I've seen the AA2 reviewed on gaming Web sites, but I've never been able to snag a copy.

Guess these "old school" collections are selling well -- funny how we buy the latest video game technology to play Defender and Pitfall...

It's all nostalgia and and the 20 Years theory...

In 20 years, everything that was popular then will be popular again because people who grew up in that era will now want to have the things they saw in their youth.

I'm certainly no exception to this, as I bought 2 of the 3 Activision packs for Windows when they came out then dug out the old 2600 and started buying up old games I'd wanted forever.

On top of that, it's cost-effective because the only real money put into emulation collections is into the basic emulation engine for the old system. In the case of the 2600 stuff, they just need one engine then they can fine-tune bits of it for each game. In the case of arcade games, it's a little more effort because arcade hardware, ESPECIALLY before the JAMMA standards of the late 80s / early 90s, was very specific to individual games.

I seriously had only one arcade around here, didn't begin gaming until 93 or so, and that one arcade (currently shut down) didn't really keep any old stuff around except for pinball games and Pac-Man.

Although before I was officially a gamer, we had a roller rink (also shut down now) that had some good stuff for the time, like Toobin', Moonwalker, Robotron, Joust and Defender.

No Gauntlet that I remember, though.

You make it sound like its hours and hours of hassle. Plus there are things such as USB adapters you know (I never use the keyboard for emulation). If these games were classics to me then fine I would buy it but I'm not paying a craphouse like Midway 20 or above bucks to play some games I didnt even like in the first place.

Also I'll say it again, I want Mappy
