While Haunted Mansion won the weekend, the real story is Elf. It managed to go UP 18.5% from last week, despite four new releases this weekend, and have the 6th highest 4th weekend ever. Also, Matrix is already out of the top 10. Damn, dropped fast.

What the fuck is this Haunted Mansion?

I haven't seen one god damn ad or heard a DAMN thing about it.

You must not watch much TV. I've seen plenty of ads for Haunted Mansion.

In fact I've seen the movie. Of course, I didn't see it because I wanted to. It's not something I'd suggest to others or watch it again, but it wasn't that bad.

I've also seen bad santa, which I enjoyed.

Yes damn you Matrix...100+ million ha that's what you deserve. Yes, because 100+ million is such a punishment.

It has made $230 overseas though.

I guess people over there don't know what a good movie is, or they have a thing for bad acting....

I got the top 7 right, except for Gothika. I had timeline in it's spot.

Also, I had Elf and HM reversed.

Looks like Elf will get to $200 million. Will is the next Adam Sandler.

I look at Will as the "next" Chevy Chase.

So you're predicting his career will bomb after a few more years, but he'll still have a group of loyal fans?

No, just in the way that he acts and presents himself. He's just more like a Chase than a Sandler go me. He's more like a Steve Martin than a Sandler.

I'd agree with that sentiment.

Well I doubt that Bad Santa and The Missing were expecting to do great box office numbers. So I can't see them being too disappointed by it.

Big Santa isn't a disapointment because it wasn't a big budget movie...Timeline was and No one Believed for a second Missing was gonna do anything.

I'd agree that Timeline is the only disappointed new movie. That's the kind of movie, studios expect good box office from.

BTW, boxofficemojo.com's estimates are showing CitH at #1 with 25.5 mil and HM at #2 with 25.3 mil.

Erm, then they must have changed them, because that's where I got my numbers from.

BS has that cult classic written all over it...

It'll be a HUGE video seller.

Also...Love Actually seems to be steady each week...

Bad Santa opened in about 750 less theaters than the Missing and Timeline. And, as it turns out, Bad Santa made $8,383 per theater, while the Missing made $5,987/theater and Timeline made $4,521/theater. [All taken from boxofficemojo.com] So, as it turns out, Bad Santa did better than it seems. If it opened up in the same amount of theaters that movies like Gothika and Elf did, it definitely would have more money. The way it is now though, it did pretty damn good and is sure to pass its budget of only $18 million.

Basically, Bad Santa did a lot better than I thought it would. I had it making less than $10 million this weekend, and doing pretty awful in reviews, so I'm happy it exceeded my expectations. Hope to see it soon.

And I'm kind of happy Timeline bombed, considering Paul Walker is one of the worst actors today.

Anyway, good numbers for the movie business all around this weekend.

This list isn't right, Cat In the Hat was actually #1, but just barely...

In initial box office reporting early Sunday, "The Haunted Mansion" had the top spot, but Universal later revised its numbers upward to put "The Cat in the Hat" in the lead. Rankings could change again when final numbers are reported Monday.

...the actual numbers for the top two are as follows.

"Dr. Seuss' the Cat in the Hat" --- $25.6 million

"The Haunted Mansion" --- $25.3 million,
