Well, They're Actually Going Through With It

I'm an Aussie too, and find this thread (and most of the topics in this forum) fascinating. The whole Liberals/Conservatives battle that seems to dominate American politics and news media has never really picked up in Australia. Here we have more of a focus on the two major parties, the Liberals and Nationals (two seperate parties who form a Coalition and currently govern) and the Labor Party (the other major party). The Coalition are right wing and Labor are left wing, but for some reason the conservatives/liberal debate has never really intensified as much here as it has in America. Australia seems to have more of a focus on class over political ideology. The Labor Party has strong ties with the unions so it represents the working class, whereas the Liberals represent the 'forgotten' middle class and the Nationals are predominantly supported by rural supporters. There's extreme left and extreme right parties like the Greens (hippies) and One Nation (redneck racists), but that's about it. Both major parties have similar foreign and economic policy, they really only differ when it comes to social issues such as health care and education.

I've never lived in America, and my contact with Americans is limited to the occassional vacation once or twice a decade, but it seems as though in the past few years in your country there's been a push to define every newsmaker, news service, political issue and person in the context of liberal and conservative. Organisations created with a specific ideology in mind like Fox News or this Liberal Radio Network strike me as retarded, as does the idea that there are a few million Americans who only get news from sources which share their political ideology and disregard the rest as 'liberal bias' or 'FAUX NEWS'.

I don't know if any of this interests anybody, but that's just the thought I've collected through reading this thread and others. Or in other words, YOU YANKEE BUGGERS ARE WEIRD!

Order, liberty, equality here...

You mean equality's not important to you? *gasp* Color me surprised.

Equality, liberty, order is how I would order them. While I can *kind of* get valuing liberty over equality and order, valuing order over liberty and equality just seems like you'd be more happy with a dictator. Hey, there's plenty of order there, and none of that bothersome "liberty" or "equality" stuff to get in the way!

Good Lord.

Why if you put Order above anything else you are almost ... like Hitler!

OK, here are my reasons:

Order: Rules must be followed (this includes the ones regarding discrimination, shooting little gun-toting terrorists in the foot, etc.).

Liberty (in my book it was called freedom): Within these rules everyone is free to do their own thing.

Equality: With rules in place, and people free to do what that want within those rules, equality is not as important, imo.

Or in other words, YOU YANKEE BUGGERS ARE WEIRD!

Can't argue with that. And to think we have the bombs...

Plus they're the ones who won't call them terrorist, anymore. Would anything other than a Liberal news service do something like that?

They call them accused terrorists.

No.

Damn you kids and your newfangled educations!!1!

The textbook was for a class I took in January of '95.

Newfangled indeed.

Wasn't there some other part of this chart -- like a scale showing how socialist/free market you were?

Or am I thinking of that political compass thingy?...

Your political compass

Economic Left/Right: -1.62

Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.36

(see graph to decipher)

Looks right to me...Little to the Left and right in between Libertarian and Authoritarian.

By the way, they changed that site quite a bit. They actually have the democratic candidates and stuff up there now, it's somewhat interesting.

Woah, I became more conservative since last time I took this.

Economic Left/Right: 2.12

Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.31

(I didn't see any of the Democrat candidates -- perhaps they are so far to the left they fall off the compass.

EDIT: Nevermind. AHAHAHAHA -- John Kerry looks to be the closest to me.

And WTF is Braun doing on the right side of the economic divide?

Gerhard Schroder is the closest to me in the global chart (nobody is close to me in the composer chart)?!?!

Eww...

"Our race has many superior qualities, compared to other races."

That was my favourite. Anyone "Strongly agree" with that one?

My score was: Economic Left/Right: -3.00

Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.90

Just as I thought, a moderate who leans to the left. I was close to Gandhi (wtf?) and Jean Chretien (Bleh). I think all the sex questions pulled me closer to the left, and all the religion questions may have pulled me closer to the right. Which isn't fair, since there are plenty of Conservative sexaholic atheists, and many more Liberal Christian prudes.

What was this thread about again?

Economic Left/Right: -3.88

About what I expected.

the Regress Media Network...

Conservatives are starting a radio network? Great name for it, guys!

Little boy, conservatives don't need to start one -- they already dominate that talk-radio market.

I know I'd be proud if my political party dominated an obsolete medium with a loudmouth moron who got himself fired from ESPN.

Why yes, Rush does appear to be bitter about many things. Thanks for pointing that out.

You know, for people who don't care about the medium, the left has tried for YEARS to crack into it and are now spending millions to do it.

Ironic, huh?

Actually, my young Jedi apprentice, if you listen to Rush's radio show for any length of time, you would realize that instead of being bitter/angry Rush tends to use humor quite a bit when making comments.

He certainly is more jovial than bitter whenever I have listened to him -- and I have been a listener since '94 and got on his show once.

Now can you PLEASE leave the grown-ups table and return to whatever folder you strayed from?

And the funny thing is they have freakin' NPR...

The first sign of someone being intellectually threatened is said to be when they begin focusing on one irrational point of someone (in this case, age).

Now run out and go play with your friends...

You mean.....outside?

*gasp*

Just trying to play into the sterotype....

You mean like you focusing on Rush's so-called bitterness?
