dubq 0 Report post Posted December 2, 2003 I'm just posting this for those who were involved in last weeks discussion about Heenan and Slaughter looking close to how Monsoon did before he passed away... SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Dec. 1, 2003 -- Sgt. Slaughter has lost about 100 pounds from his highest weight, 390 pounds, and he plans to lose about 30 more to get back to his “fighting weight” of 260. Slaughter’s new slender physique was on display last week when he wrestled Randy Orton on RAW. “Last time I wrestled on TV, I saw myself and I was kind of shocked about the way I looked,” Slaughter told WWE.com, referring to a match last summer. Slaughter, a WWE agent these days, consulted with Dr. Bob Quarles, a physician with close ties to WWE, who conducted assorted tests on the former WWE Champion. “He found that I was healthy, I was just overweight and out of shape,” Slaughter said. Slaughter explained that his back was in such bad shape due to his legendary 30-year career that, for the last five years, Slaughter has been unable to train. Slaughter said his back problems date all the way back to his high school football playing days; a few years after high school, he broke into the wrestling business, which isn’t exactly the healthiest profession for one’s back. Slaughter remembers a battle royal in the early 1980s in Montreal; he and Andre the Giant were the last two competitors in the ring, and when Andre picked him up and threw him over the top rope, Slaughter landed squarely on his back. The next morning, he couldn’t even roll over in his hotel bed to pick up the phone for his wakeup call. Slaughter’s back problems have been particularly bad the last few years. Quarles introduced Slaughter to a nutritionist/chiropractor, J.J. Heavilin, who started Slaughter on a low-sugar, high-protein diet. Asked if it was like the Atkins diet, Slaughter said, “It’s kind of a Sarge diet.” He added, “I don’t really call it a diet. I call it a change of eating habits and a change of lifestyle because I don’t plan on going back to the way I ate before.” Slaughter said he started looking at the nutrition labels on low-fat and fat-free foods and realized that many of them were loaded with sugar. He eliminated them from his diet. Slaughter has lost between 60-70 pounds since he started the diet in the summer. Because he’s lost all that weight, and because Heavilin, the chiropractor, has done such great work on his back, Slaughter has been cleared to resume training and jogging on Dec. 12. “Hopefully the next 25 to 30 pounds will come off in training that I’m going to be able to do for the first time in five years,” he said. Slaughter said he found an old picture of himself when he was in much better shape. He made several copies of it and put in on his refrigerator, in his briefcase and anywhere else that he often looked. “That was what gave me the motivation to get back down to 260 pounds,” he said. But there were other motivations: Slaughter said his main inspiration was to get in great shape in time for WrestleMania XX, just in case he’s needed to compete there. Plus, he said, all the young competitors on the WWE roster call him a legend. “They say I’m a legend, so I wanted to look like a legend,” he said. By the time Slaughter started the diet, he had already trimmed 30-40 pounds. He started losing weight leading up to a surgical procedure last spring to remove his gallbladder. Slaughter said his entire family – his sister, both parents, all four grandparents – have had gallbladder problems. Last Thanksgiving, Slaughter checked into the emergency room at a hospital in Charlotte, N.C. because he had what turned out to be excruciatingly painful gallbladder stones. After consulting with his doctor, he opted to have his gallbladder taken out; his doctor encouraged him to lose weight in preparation for the procedure. He did, and he shed even more pounds afterwards because eating was difficult to impossible. At that point, and after seeing himself on television, Slaughter decided to make a full-fledged attempt to take off all his excess weight. Today, Slaughter says, “I feel great. I got a lot of compliments on my match last week.” Slaughter said his match with Orton, the “Legend Killer,” was a milestone for him because he has also wrestled Orton’s grandfather (Bob Orton), father (“Cowboy” Bob Jr.) and uncle (Barry O). “I’ve beaten the other three, but I didn’t beat Randy,” he said. “But I wouldn’t mind getting a rematch with him when I get in better shape, so I can make the legends look better than they have.” So, there you have it. Sarge isn't wasting away, he's living a healthier lifestyle and rightfully so. Good for him!
Guest Dynamite Kido Report post Posted December 2, 2003 Honestly though I really don't remember him wrestling under 300 lbs. Maybe in the early 80's but that's still a maybe. Or was he under 300 when he was doing the GI Joe thing or in the AWA?
Downhome 0 Report post Posted December 2, 2003 So, there you have it. Sarge isn't wasting away, he's living a healthier lifestyle and rightfully so. Good for him! Exactly. I couldn't believe that people here were all, "OMG HE B DYIN~!", he's just getting in better shape. In that match with Orton, he looked the best he has in years. Congrats to Sgt. Slaughter! Now all he needs to do is have a LONG ass talk with Rikishi.

Or was he under 300 when he was doing the GI Joe thing or in the AWA? Weights were always over-exagerated back then [and still are] so I wouldn't be surprised if he was 260-80 back in those days [GI Joe days, I mean].
