The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

Recommended Posts

I wish the Leafs would play Tellqvist more. Kidd can be OK, but for every good game he has there's a 7 goal blowout in there somewhere.

I'd say if Belfour retires, build up Telqvist because he's got skills untapped.

Hasek out for season

DETROIT -- Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek will miss the rest of the season because of an injured groin, although he hopes to play again.

``That's it for the season,'' Hasek said Tuesday. ``I cannot handle anymore. My groin, it cannot handle it. I hoped for two months it would get better every day. But it didn't get better, it got even worse last week''

The Red Wings have Curtis Joseph and Manny Legace in the net.

The 39-year-old Hasek ended his retirement after one year to return to Detroit, but he played in just 14 games before Tuesday's announcement. He was 8-3-2 for the Central Division-leading Red Wings.

``He really feels that he needs an extended period of time to give the groin a chance to heal,'' Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said from a meeting of GMs in Henderson, Nev.

Hasek has been the NHL's MVP twice and won the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goalie six times.

``I think in the summertime he's going to decide whether he wants to officially retire,'' Holland said.

Hasek retired after helping Detroit win the 2002 Stanley Cup, and the Red Wings signed Joseph to replace him. After the Red Wings were swept in the first round of last season's playoffs, Hasek returned, and the team tried to trade Joseph.

But no one wanted to take on Joseph's $8 million contract, and Detroit must be relieved to have him now. Joseph is 13-9-2 with a 2.48 goals-against average this season.

``We're very, very lucky that he's been a real pro through this,'' Holland said. ``And luckily for us that nobody claimed him.''

Hasek out for the year?

And here my avid Red Wings-loving lab partner tells me in chemistry today that Hasek is back and the Wings are ready to take the Cup.

So who's getting the sweep this year, Cujo? Calgary? Edmonton? LA?

Well, Tellqvist is the goalie of the future. Hopefully, assuming there's hockey next year, he's Belfour's back-up

Me and you share the same view point.

Toronto Management will try to find the best goalie out on the free agent market

Burke is the best bet for a solid goalie, and lately he has been improving every year, and its been a while for him to prove himself in the playoffs.

Now with Burke to Phili, Colorado really needs a solid number 1 goalie to carry them into the playoffs (Osgood), and if Belfour has constant back problems, that could be a problem for Toronto (no Stanley Cup)

I couldn't disagree more about Colorado. Aebisher has been amazing all year and he deserves to go into the playoffs this year as the undisputed #1. Even if he falters in the post-season this year, he still should go into next season as #1. All goalies have to get experience some time, if every team just kept playing "proven #1 goailes" then guys like Roy and Broduer never would have brought Cups to their teams at such young ages.

With Philly though, I think the Flyers should devote the next month and a half to pushing Burke to the limits. Play him as often as possible to see if this guy really is the answer. If he becomes a serious question mark, then give Esche the job in the playoffs and let Burke ride the bench. There needs to be an obvious #1 in Philly if they're going to have any kind of defensive confidence when they go into the post-season.

While I do agree Aebischer isn't ready to be a Stanley Cup winning goalie right now, Colorado would be stupid to bring in Kolzig or Osgood. (plus, why would St Louis trade Ozzie to a Western Conference team?!?). If the Avalanche were going to get a veteran goalie to ride into the playoffs, they'd have done so already. To wait until the deadline to pick someone up would shoot bullet holes into Aebischer's confidence, which would be a pisspoor move to do to a young goalie.

Detroit remains my unquestioned pick to come out of the West, especially after the Hasek news. The team doesn't sound very happy with Hasek at all, and I think they're going to rally solidly behind CuJo down the stretch and into the playoffs. I think you're going to see some inspired goaltending out of Joseph the next four months.

Alright, just for the record, who all here thought the original Oiler-Flyer Mike Comrie trade was a great move by Clarke? And I think alot of you did so don't be shy.

Also, in no way would I call Osgood a "solid number one goalie".

And talking about goaltending controversy, Philly could already have one on their hands if Antero Niittymaki can keep his play up.

How can you tell a kid, who is 3-0, with 3 goals against and a 96.1 save percentage that he is being sent down? Not to mention him outplaying Martin Brodeur in a 35 save performance to earn a victory over Philly's biggest divisional rival.

I liked the deal, but in no way did I think it was a steal by Clarke or anything. I would have liked to have seen what would happen if Comrie got 18 minutes a game, but it wasn't going to happen on this team. So it turns into Woywitka, a 1st, and a 3rd for Burke, Branko, and Eager. That doesn't look bad to me.

At least Niitty won't be getting sent down for a couple more weeks. I would leave him as the starter through that stretch, he earned at least that much.

What's the point of trading for Burke to leave the kid as your #1? If they were going to keep playing Niittymaki for the stretch drive, they shouldn't have pulled the trigger on the Burke trade and just rode Niittymaki until Esche got healthy. Then, come playoff time, keep Esche as your starter with Niittymaki as your backup.

And count me among those that thought the Comrie to Philly trade as a good move by Clarke. Not a great move, mind you, b/c I don't think that depth at forward was a concern for Philly, but anytime you can pick up a decent player without costing yourself too much from your present team, it's got to be considered a good trade. (e.g. Weinrich to the Blues, Slegr to the B's, etc.)

They wanted Burke for the playoffs so they would have a veteran backing up Esche, just in case he got injured. I see no reason they just couldn't have him play the same role for the time being. They have a perfect opportunity right now to see a young guy, in a pressure situation, and they ought to just see if they have something in this guy.

Penguins acquire D Jackman from Leafs for D Berehowsky

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) - The Pittsburgh Penguins swapped defensemen with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, acquiring Ric Jackman for Drake Berehowsky.

The 25-year-old Jackman appeared in 29 games for the Maple Leafs this season, collecting two goals, four assists and 13 penalty minutes. He has played 111 career games with Dallas, Boston and Toronto and has three goals and eight assists.

The 32-year-Berehowsky returns to Toronto after collecting five goals, 16 assists and 50 penalty minutes in 47 games this season for the Penguins. He was a first-round pick of Toronto in 1990 and made his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs during the 1990-91 season.

Berehowsky also has played for Edmonton, Nashville, Vancouver and Phoenix and has 36 goals and 110 assists in 540 games.

Both players are Toronto natives.

I think I trust Berehowsky on the blue line more than I do Jackman, but I wonder if he's going to get more playing time than Jackman did.

When I look at the list of ex-Leaf defencemen I'd like back on the team, Berehowsky isn't particularly high on it. However, considering who he was traded for, it sounds about right.

I'm also guessing that Berehowsky is a free agent at the end of the year...

Anyone see the OT of the Isles/Avs game last nite. Great games by both goalies. Dipietro had more to do and he made a Hasek like save in OT ...might be the save of the year. Sauve made a great glove save on Hunter in OT....2 goalies who have a bright future.

Or at least, for three of the next four months...Joseph sprained his ankle tonight.

Oops.

Bonk went down for a month to a month and a half with a broken foot.

Volchenkov and Varada are still out, and Fisher has played in two games.

Damn injuries. Making me nervous and such.

NEW YORK -- The NHL's 30 teams lost a combined $273 million during the 2002-03 season, according to a report issued on behalf of the league Thursday.

The report said 19 of the 30 teams had operating losses last season. In addition, the league said it spent 75 percent of its revenue on player costs, according to the report by former Securities and Exchange commission chairman Arthur Levitt.

The report said the league generated $1.99 billion in revenue last season.

The league is preparing for bargaining with the NHL Players' Association on a labor contract to replace one that expires Sept. 15.

That number will go down a bit this year, since a better Canadian dollar, and making it not as expensive for Canadian teams to go down.

Only teams I think are that lost a considerable amounts of money, were, Florida, Tampa, Atlanta, Carolina, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal, Buffalo, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, LA, Anaheim, San Jose, Phoenix, Nashville, New York Islanders

Well, 53.3% is better than 63.3%, I guess...

I think the biggest thing is that over HALF of the teams lost money. How many just broke even? Or made a profit?

Also... 75% of revenue to the players? That's insane.

I heard the Dallas Stars aren't doing so hot on the financial side of things this year. At least Ottawa and Buffalo are back on track, though. I have a feeling that the Pittsburgh Penguins aren't going anywhere, because it's a historically relevant and well-known team. The league would be wise to block a move; a courtesy it surprisingly did not extend to the Twin Cities in 1993.

Did anyone hear Darren Pang Tuesday night on ESPN Overnight? They just played a bit of his interview on the Senators pregame show, and he basically accused Dominik Hasek of flat-out quitting on the team, and never having any interest in playing this season in the first place (except for that fat contract).

I needed a trip back to 1996 to remember that sounds like something that Hasek might do. This helped refresh my memory: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/stor..._jim&id=1732829

Holy Shot Roenick just took a slap shot to the face. Guess that'll be another scar. And as I'm typing this Primeau takes an inadvertant knee on knee hit from Holik. Wow

EDIT: They just reported Roenick was taken to the hospital with a shattered jaw.

I've been a big pitt's fan since I was a kid because Mario played for them and I don't think that they'll be able to keep the team there for more than a couple more seasons if things keep going this badly.

at this point they're trying to lose in hopes of getting a top first rounder. just like they did the year mario was up for grabs.
