The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

I must say I am shocked that Washington, with all the trading they're doing, have not gone back to Bobby "Maxime Oullett, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round draft picks for Adam Oates sounds fair" Clarke looking to deal.

see the thing with Gonchar to Toronto is Stajan. If Ferguson doesn't want Stajan going, then Gonchar isn't going to Toronto.

And he shouldn't want Stajan going. No way is Gonchar worth that much, with what the Caps have (not) been getting in their fire sale so far.

Looking at what the Caps got for Bondra, if I'm the Leafs my first offer would be Antropov, Berg, and maybe a high draft pick. The Caps are giving up a top flight defenceman and getting back a forward with a ton of potential and another serviceable defenceman. The Leafs are deep at forward and even though Antropov could be a very good player, he's expendable and if they're getting Gonchar they don't need Berg anymore.

Of course, this is just my fantasy world. He'll probably end up in Colorado like everyone else seems to.

Looks like I may be right, unfortunately.

If Washington could pick up Morris (and other prospects) for Kolzig & Gonchar, it'd be a great hockey trade for them. I stress 'hockey trade' because it'd be good as a personnel decision, beyond being just a salary dump. Morris is a young, offensive defenseman who could easily replace Gonchar on the blue line, and is 8 years younger. And if the Caps moved Kolzig, they'd be able to transition more goaltending responsibilities to their young netminders, and save $6.25 million in the process. If they could find a way to get another roster player (such as Hinote) instead of just AHL prospects or draft picks, then I'd say it would be a fantastic move for the Caps.

Well, it looks very much like the eight playoff teams in the East are set (sorry, Sabres fans)...it's going to be REALLY interesting to see how they order themselves over the next month and a half. With Montreal's win over New Jersey tonight, there are eight points separating first (Ottawa, Philadelphia) from seventh (Montreal).

New Jersey acquired Victor Kozlov from the Florida Panthers today as well.

Habs 5 straight wins, and these are wins against teams in the playoffs. I'm proud of you my boys

In a situation that none of us ... and I really mean none of us ... predicted, the TAMPA BAY LIGHTING (!) would be the top seed in the East if the playoffs started today. This is the team that like 3 weeks ago I was hoping the Bruins would get to face in the first round of the playoffs, and now they're leading the conference. (of course, they're also the only team with a better record than Boston in the last 6 weeks or so). If the playoffs started today, the first round would be amazing:

Tampa Bay vs. NY Islanders

Ottawa vs. Montreal (matchup of Northeast rivals)

Philly vs. NJ (matchup of Atlantic rivals)

Toronto vs. Boston (matchup of Original 6 teams & Northeast rivals)

Well, there's a guarantee that a Canadian team will be in the semi-finals

That just screams Toronto/Philly from last year where it is a war that neither team would be able to come back from for round 2.

Channels Tina Turner and chants:

Two teams enter. One team leaves.

Habs get Kovalev from Rangers.

NEW YORK (Ticker) - The New York Rangers began to dismantle a dysfunctional team Tuesday, trading former All-Star right wing Alexei Kovalev to the Montreal Canadiens for right wing Jozef Balej and a 2004 second-round draft pick.

And the next firesale begins.

Leetch will probably go, probably to a team that loses out on Gonchar. So Toronto, Colorado, Boston, the possibilities are limited.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised to see Messier go somewhere.

The Caps GM said that there is an offer being worked on for Gonchar, as he was scratched tonight against Florida...

I am shocked that Montreal got Kovalev...

Kovalev, Koivu, Ryder

Kovalev, Riberio, Zednik

Kovalev, Perrault, Ryder...

the possibilities are endless

I can't believe Montreal landed Kovalev. As a Canuck fan, I'm mildly annoyed that they didn't grab a guy like Kovalev if he was available. But I guess we're fine at RW, and Montreal kicks all kinds of ass. Go Habs!

A resurgent Calgary, a tough Montreal team...is it 1989 or something?

Very good trade for Montreal. Kovalev is a solid player who can score some goals down the stretch run for the Habs. Hopefully he can produce in the playoffs for Montreal.

Well just hope that Montreal wins the cup, unlike in 1989.

Damn Calgary for winning the cup in the forum.

In a trade that will probably go overlooked, the Kings pickup Nathan Dempsey for a 4th rounder in what I would consider a steal.

Dempsey is a good puck moving D-man who T.O. should never have let go (not to mention Smith and Cross) and should help give added depth to the Kings blueline.

And in totally out of nowhere ideas, I say the Canucks should package up Nolan Baumgartner, Fedor Fedorov and R.J. Umberger and deal them to Anaheim for Salei or Carney. Salei and Carney are probably two of the better defenseman available apart from Leetch/Gonchar and I don't think those three could land Leetch or Gonchar.

I believe Baumgartner just hit the max games up before he has to clear waivers again, they want to get rid of Fedorov (and this unites him with older brother Sergei in Anaheim), and Umberger is set to become an UFA this year.

The tough part is which one to go with. Carney is a solid d-man who was great in the playoffs last year with the Ducks and can play against the opposing teams top lines and contain them. Salei is younger (by 5 years) and cheaper and is a really good defenseman in his own right, with a good nasty streak.

Better yet, package these guys up with one more player and try to make a move for Sean Hill and Jeff O'Neill.

I think the Ducks would take the three aformetioned players for either Carney or Salei. Anyone else's thoughts?

The B's picking up Gonchar more than makes up for that debacle last night against the Leafs. This is the first time that I can remember that the team made an acquisition at the deadline that actually could create some waves (Moran & McGillis at last year's deadline didn't really move me). Plus, since it only Morrisonn & a few picks, it didn't cost the team much of the future. Of course, if (when?) they don't resign Gonchar at the end of the season, I might feel differently.

And I can't believe how bad the B's looked last night in Toronto. I don't know if it's that the Leafs just played that great, or the B's that horribly or what, but it's the worst the team has looked in a few weeks. Luckily, though, they have 2 more games this month against Toronto, hopefully they'll win those 2.

Is it just me or are the top two Hart trophy candidates playing for teams in Florida?

Well, maybe Luongo isn't top two but if he sneaks Florida into the playoffs he should get it. But my vote right now has to go to Martin St. Louis without a doubt.

Also with Gonchar to Boston maybe the Bruins fans will stop bitching. That is until they lose out in the first round again.

Also, that pretty much widdles down the Leetch contenders to Colorado and Toronto because it does not seem very likely that Slats would send Leetch Lou's way to help the Devils make another run at the Cup. I would say look for Lou to make a move for one of the aformentioned Duck defensemen who he got a good look at in last years playoffs.

Morrisonn plus 2 picks isn't too much to give up for Gonchar IMHO. I'd have preferred if the B's could have moved Jeff Jillson instead of Shaone, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over Morrisonn getting traded. The B's have a fair amount of good young d-men even w/o Morrisonn. Hell, Boynton, Jillson, and Girard (if he can come back) is a pretty good young nucleus, and it's not like Gill or McGillis are old. The picks bother me more than the player, truthfully.

With how open the Eastern Conference is this year, a trade like this could catapult a team from the 5th seed and a tough first round matchup to the #2 or 3 seed and a much easier matchup. If the Bruins can swing one more trade, pick up a legitimate top 6 forward, they'll be tough to beat in the postseason. Maybe a Messier, Francis, or O'Neill. Once Samsonov & Bergeron get healthy, that'd give the B's 3 good lines, 3 good D pairings and a goalie that has comparable stats to what Theodore had when he won the Hart & Vezina.

And unless the Panthers sneak into the postseason, there's no way that Luongo should be considered a Hart candidate. I hate it when a team with a losing record has an MVP candidate. The whole point to the MVP is that their team would be lost without them, and I'm willing to bet that the Cats would have not made the playoffs even if Luongo had a shit year. Put him up for the Vezina, maybe, but not the Hart.
