Vanhalen 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 Does anyone find this so racist, imagine if Regal had to pretend he wasnt english, maybe im overreacting, but this is horrible to me. "After the match, Mick Foley gets on the mic and tells La Resistance that America and tonight’s crowd is very forgiving and they’ll be willing to if they’ll recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Foley conducts it, the crowd goes along with it, but Conway half asses it and Dupree doesn’t do it at all. For this, Foley fires them. "

Guest Ray Report post Posted December 3, 2003 imagine if Regal had to pretend he wasnt english, You know... Dupree isn't really French. Anyway, this is just another example of Vince going for the cheap USA pop. Nothing new.

Ace309 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 Racist? When did country of origin became a person's race? And what word would you suggest to serve the purpose? It's a pet peeve of mine - in the case of prejudice against a country of origin analogous to prejudice against a particular race, 'racist' is the best word to approximate the feeling described. 'Nationalist' doesn't work, because that has another meaning already. This comes up periodically on another board I follow at themat.com - a Pakistani wrestler posts regularly and people respond in truly bigoted form, then deny being racist because "Pakistani isn't a race." Prejudice is prejudice (ignoring for the moment the question of whether this angle actually demonstrates prejudice), even if we don't have an exact word to describe this type of prejudice and have to approximate it with another word describing a similar pattern of thought. tetsubeav 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 I could see using bigoted or predjudiced or, as the subject said, xenophobic, but calling this "racist" just doesn't feel right. It's putting this on the same level of the HHH/Booker T "those people" fiasco. All-in-all, I don't see what the big deal is here. You have the newest anti-American style heel stable who were "punished" by the face by having to do something they'd hate. They half-ass it for the cheap heat. I'm not saying it's good storytelling, I think it's an awful way to get heat, esp when you get into the 3rd Law of Wrestling Thermodynamics and have Foley fire them to get himself face heat (albeit very litte). Just my $0.02.

Guest nikowwf Report post Posted December 3, 2003 BTW, for how pissy you all get over these things, you do realize in these other countries that you really can't get away with disrespecting their anthems, etc. In France, Arabs in school, work, etc. must not dress in their home countries clothes. In Germany, they are VERY xenophobic. Sometimes, I think you people think that the US is very pro US, while every other country is completely free and open to all races. Thats really just not the case. dont kill me on this - i think the xenophobic bs is the wwe is lame too. but its hardly a US only problem. niko
Insane Bump Machine 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 In Germany, they are VERY xenophobic. How, exactly? I don't know a country that cares less about stuff like the national anthem and its nation's symbols than Germany. 14% of the people living in our capital are not born here. tetsubeav 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 have Foley fire them to get himself face heat (albeit very litte). Yeah, you could hear a pin drop when Foley was out there. Actually I mis-spoke on that. What I meant was that giving Mick the chance to get face heat had very little useful purpose. Just another "build up the non-wrestler position over the actual wrestlers" heat exchange.

dubq 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 By the way, I thought the funniest part of the night was when during the match with LaRes pariticpating... Lawler said something about Conway being a French Sympathizer and JR retorted with this brilliant comeback "Well, I don't know anything about sympathizing with other countries. I'm an American!" Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 I believe the proper title of this thread should have been "I'm sick of this bullshit nationalism." Toxxic 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 I think the thing is that if Foley had actually "fired" La Re (even if only storyline-wise) then it'd be shit. However, since he said to Bischoff that all he was doing was making a point and wasn't actually firing anyone, it's kind of OK. Personally I'd be pissed off if someone was storyline fired for not repeating the Oath of Alleigance (or whatever it is), no matter what their supposed nation of origin, or whether they were a face or heel. But since he was only doing it to get a point across and didn't follow through i think we should see it as such.
haVoc 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 Like this is something new. This has been happening in wrestling for 100 years. Americans get their ass' kicked in Japan. Americans get murdered in Mexico. America makes fun of everyone else.
LaParkaMarka 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 WWE does bullshit angles all the time. I mean, look at the recent angle with Stacy and Austin. That was insanely sexist (or, at the very least, extremely distasteful). Plus there was the Booker/HHH thing, as someone mentioned above. I understand why you'd get pissed off about this stuff. But WWE is a pretty terrible company in a lot of ways. This angle is just icing on the cake.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted December 3, 2003 Are we all forgetting something very important about the Mick Foley character? He's the damn master of the cheap pop! It was just Mick getting that cheap pop he is slowly becoming known for. While I found it to be completely stupid cause honestly, wasn't how Rob did it how most of us did it in High School? Seriously. If they were in Canada, you can bet Foley would have asked them to sing the Canada national song.
