Somebody sell me on Buffy The Vampire Slayer,

Recommended Posts

I would say Season 4 is better than 1 because even though 4 is the weakest of the overall season arcs, only FIVE episodes in the first season deal with the main story arc, The Master. Everything else is just throwaways.

At least Season 4's "throwaways" consisted of Hush, Restless and Something Blue.

Way to spoil the show for him if he ever decides to watch it RRR...

He wanted you to tell him why you like it, not describe the show from start to finish. Not to prove to him that you're the biggest fanatic on it.

I suppose I have a soft spot for season one because that was when I first started watching. I still don't think it's campy, though.

He said "sell me on the show" - how can I sell it on him without going into detail? He wanted to know why it gets the hype..

"It has great characters - Xander is funny" WOW, gee, that should convince anyone. I wouldn't call myself a top 5 fanatic on this board, let alone "biggest". I enjoy the show. I wanted to provide perspective on it. The best way to sell something is to familiarize someone with it. Besides, there were other people "spoiling" the show, so it's not like I was the only one (infact, the precident was set BEFORE I posted). So yeah, add something or go away.

I also think Season 4 had the better standalone eps then Season 1 and might overall be better but I still liked Season 1 quite a bit. I specifically enjoyed "The Pack" and "Nightmares" as well as the ones mentioned, ironically though it also has two episodes that I absolutely despise in "The Puppet Show" and "Teacher's Pet"

I read an interview where the developers put over how "funny" it was having in Sid...sad.

While I like Season One, it is one of my least favorites. Season Four gets the good nod from me in that case.

He said "sell me on the show" - how can I sell it on him without going into detail?  He wanted to know why it gets the hype..

So....... what you're saying is there's absolutely no way you could go into detail about why you like the show without giving away what happens at the end of the seasons. Do I have this right?

"It has great characters - Xander is funny" WOW, gee, that should convince anyone.

How on earth is what you did better? You didn't even say why you thought the stuff that happened was good, you just said it happened. Well that's terrific.

I wouldn't call myself a top 5 fanatic on this board, let alone "biggest".

And yet you're the only one writing 20 paragraphs on it a day.

Besides, there were other people "spoiling" the show, so it's not like I was the only one (infact, the precident was set BEFORE I posted).

Um, not really. The first thing Mole said in his post was that it was an essay on season 3. So in case the first guy that posted ever plans on still watching the show, he wont read it.

It's not that season 1 is that bad...but the writing got soooo much better after that that it can't hold up to the later episodes.

The worst season of Buffy is still better then the best season of many other shows.

I still can't believe they put that stupid fucking puppet in the Buffy game.

Dames

That WAS completley out of left field, wasn't it?

And I find that the farther I go back, the less I like the shows. I still LIKE the shows, but then I'm the type of guy who likes to keep things current.

As for an explanation of Willow, she started out as a painfully shy social outcast and grew into a confident, powerfull Wiccan who, over the course of the series, came to terms with her sexuality, her use of magic, and her role in the Scoobies in general.

Was the puppet in the original comic? Because while he doesn't fit the story, I didn't actually mind him being in the game too much as you only play him for about 10 minutes and he actually did play differently than other playable characters.

You left out one thing...

So yeah, add something or go away.

Which you haven't really done... at all. But you can try again in your next post to contribute to the discussion... unless you watch the show at all... do you?

So....... what you're saying is there's absolutely no way you could go into detail about why you like the show without giving away what happens at the end of the seasons. Do I have this right?

I wasn't going into detail about why I like the show... I was going into detail about the characters on the show as to familiarize him with them. As evidence by this:

"To like anything you must become familiar with it."

Which on line #2.

Can I familiarize someone with the characters without going into detail about who they are and subsequently what they have done on the show to reflect that... I dunno. "Buffy has the weight of the world on her shoulders and faces a lot of bad guys and sacrifices a lot." - I dunno, just doesn't really "sell" very well, ya know? That's just pretty poor selling. Don't you just HATE bad selling? Oops... Since the end of the seasons tend to have the most impact on the characters, kinda hard to leave em out.

Why would I talk about why I like the show? What would my personal taste have anything to do with his? He's a big Horror/Sci-fi fan, that part of Buffy doesn't really appeal to me so much as the _characters_ in Buffy do. Which is why I feel familiarization is the best way to interest someone. It is very hard to "jump in" and watch a show after it is already going (or in this case, gone). But once you have a reason to watch - a character you can relate to or have interest in - it makes the transition a lot easier. Case-in-Point, me watching PRIDE 15 for the first time. I knew Sakuraba, I knew Mark Kerr, I knew Gary Goodridge, I knew of the Gracies... but that was it. A lot of the fights I watched half-hearted because I didn't know who the fighters were and therefore didn't have a connection with them - why should I care if they win or lose? Sakuraba's fight, however, I was watching very closely because he was a highly regarded fighter and I wanted to "see the hype". Now when I watch that tape I don't just look for Sakuraba, Kerr, Gracie, and Goodridge - I watch for all the fighters. Jackson, Noguiera, Oyama, etc. and watch their fights just as intently as I did with the Sakuraba fight. Maybe I should explain the connection between my experience and why I wrote why I wrote in this thread, cause I get the strangest notion that it will fly over your head. You see, if Mr. J were to go and watch some Buffy eps. with a little more familiarity with the characters, he may start to make connections between what I wrote and what is going on-screen. Interest may increase.

How on earth is what you did better? You didn't even say why you thought the stuff that happened was good, you just said it happened. Well that's terrific.

Well I gave their basic roles and character types and then showed examples. There's only really so far I can go - you have to see it to fully understand and appreciate. "It has great characters - Xander is funny" is 1 dimensional. What I did was 2 dimensional. I guess I could have gone for the "what this means" and "why this is" approach, but then I'd have people complaining about me writing too much... oops again.

And yet you're the only one writing 20 paragraphs on it a day.

And I own no Buffy books, DVD's, or have it anywhere in my sig or avatar and my name certainly isn't buffy-related... Err... Dur...Duh... Maybe it's cause (a)I like to write and (b) no one else provided an in-detail response to his query (which I am disappointed in, I thought this would have been littered with Buffy-love. But then again, I doubt this is the first time buffy-fans here had to do this.)

Um, not really. The first thing Mole said in his post was that it was an essay on season 3. So in case the first guy that posted ever plans on still watching the show, he wont read it.

And if "the first guy that posted" didn't want spoilers after asking a question that had a high probability of getting them, he'd have said so. And when he said this: "I promise to keep an open mind so feel free to reply. I just have to know why this show is so revered." I kinda got the impression that he wouldn't worry about details of the show...

Eh, I liked Willow better before she became an all-powerful Wiccan. My favorite characterization of Willow would have to be the season two version. Then again, I'm biased towards seasons 1-3.

Speaking of Buffy. I had the epitome of nerd arguments with a guy a while back.

Who would win in a fight? Buffy or Blade? I pretty much said Blade hands down.

I loved her crush on Xander stuff. I mean, right after him and Cordy hook up, and Willow freaks...that was good stuff. Really made you feel for the character.

I am pretty much lost after reading this thread, but I can say that I prefer the "out-there" epidodes to the typical vampire slayer episodes. Like the "Franken-Football" player episode.

But I can actually see why it's so popular, I guess... .

I know what you mean. The time she cried after Xander had his first time with Faith was also gold (even though she was seeing Oz at the time).

Speaking of hopeless crushes, I miss the one Xander had on Buffy.

It depends on what season Buffy you were talking about.

Season 2 Buffy would loose, but season 7 Buffy would win.

I've seen seasons 1 and 2 if you paid any attention to the other threads, and as for leaving, let me think about it...... no.

I wasn't going into detail about why I like the show... I was going into detail about the characters on the show as to familiarize him with them. As evidence by this:

So. you have to give away what happened at the end of the seasons to go into detail about the characters. Just to get that straight.

"To like anything you must become familiar with it."

Which on line #2.

Can I familiarize someone with the characters without going into detail about who they are and subsequently what they have done on the show to reflect that... I dunno. Since the end of the seasons tend to have the most impact on the characters, kinda hard to leave em out.

:) Well if you're not intelligent enough to figure out how to familiarize him with the characters without giving away everything they did, then there's these little things called spoiler tags.

Why would I talk about why I like the show? What would my personal taste have anything to do with his?

Er... Because that's sorta what he wanted to know. The best way to sell him on the show is to explain why to him you like it.

He's a big Horror/Sci-fi fan, that part of Buffy doesn't really appeal to me so much as the _characters_ in Buffy do.

The point is you didn't say why the characters appealed to you.

Interest may increase.

Of course nevermind that all it would take is to explain what their personalities and goals and motivations are. If he knows everything that's going to happen, then there's really no point to watching since there's no surprise left. Dude, I'm REALLY sorry that I made you feel like you needed to type all that. But honestly, no. You still shouldn't have spoiled it.

Well I gave their basic roles and character types and then showed examples. There's only really so far I can go - you have to see it to fully understand and appreciate.

If that's as far as you can go, then that's where you should've stopped.

"It has great characters - Xander is funny" is 1 dimensional. What I did was 2 dimensional. I guess I could have gone for the "what this means" and "why this is" approach, but then I'd have people complaining about me writing too much... oops again.

Instead you opted for the "spoil shit" approach.

Look how much you're writing on it in just one post. You know a lot about Buffy, we're all impressed. Give it a rest.

And if "the first guy that posted" didn't want spoilers after asking a question that had a high probability of getting them, he'd have said so.

No, it's common sense. And it didn't have a high probability of getting them. You're the only idiot that posted huge spoilers.

And when he said this: "I promise to keep an open mind so feel free to reply. I just have to know why this show is so revered." I kinda got the impression that he wouldn't worry about details of the show...

From what? That's some shitty reading comprehension there.

How so? Blade could just blow her away or use martial arts to smack her around and cut her down with his sword.
