Last Samurai...

Recommended Posts

So what did everyone think of the Last Samurai?

I thought it was excellent. Probably one of my top movies of 2003. It seemed to have everything down pat. The culture was excellent..they did so many things meticuously just to keep in line with the way they actually did it at the time. There's a scene where a man is stirring a pot and then sets down a spoon and he does it in an odd manner...come to find out that's how they did it at the time.

Everything in this movie seemed to fit...and everything seemed to click. The acting, the drama, the music, the dialogue, the cinematography, it all came together perfectly.

Tom Cruise gets hated on a lot for no good reason, or maybe that's just my circle of friends. In any case, I'll be sure to check it out. I actually had one question: is there a lot of fighting in the film, or is it mostly drama? Please answer in spoiler tags. Thanks in advance.

Well Tommy Boy use to not do much to defend against his critics. He use to be inconsistant in his acting. He'd go from good acting to being a pretty boy posing for the camera.

Ever since Jerry McGuire he's been a lot more consistant.

However, alot of people mainly guys still can't get past him being a pretty boy.

Brad Pitt gets the same shit and he's never really done the pretty boy stuff in his movies.

I like Tom Cruise in films and even kinda liked Vanilla Sky......I think many people hate on him because, as someone said, his pretty boy looks and perhaps jealousy also.

Well I used to think that guys like Cruise and Pitt were pretty boys. But since I've gotten older and matured I can recognize them for what they are and I really enjoy there movies.

And Hoff.....

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

There's a good mixture of fighting and drama. The fighting makes sense and the drama and dialogue is so gripping you just want to hear what happens next. There is no mindless action save for maybe one scene with a bunch of ninjas...but even that made sense.

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

There are several fights all of which make sense, 2 war battle field scenes, a few training scenes of Tom Cruise learning how to use a sword, one in self defense, ninja fight.

I thought it was quite an excellent epic. There were definately some majorly contrived situations that were a little groanworthy, but it wasn't nearly as corny as I thought it might be. The action was truly excellent, the cinematography was beautiful, the acting was good and the main characters were pretty well developed. Quite good. ***1/2

I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan.

I really enjoy most of the movies in however, but I never get over the fact that I'm watching "Tom Cruise" I can just never see him as the character. Actors like Russle Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Geoffrey Rush and currently Nick Cage (Adaptation was fucking brilliant) can always take me out of seeing them as themselves, Tom Cruise can't do that for me.

I feel that way about Ben Affleck movies, but I might still see the new movie just because it is a John Woo film.

I will only watch Tom Cruise in action movies, I almost lost faith in Mission Impossible but a cheap midday movie is worth the risk.

If you are a fan of Martial Arts movies or Asian culture in general or of the time period then you must watch Last Samurai it has drama, action, solid writing and great cinematography. It was part Couching Tiger, part Braveheart, part anti-gov't also!

I loved this movie. Best of this year in my oppinion(Havn't seen Mystic River, OBVIOUSLY havnt seen ROTK). Maybe not very best, but on of the top three. I thought this movie was excellent, everything meshed, it was just so "perfect". I will prob. see it again, maybe two more times. I love this movie. Tom Cruise is kick ass, I am a straight male, fuck you and all your hate. Also, I think Brad Pitt is an awesome actor, one of my favorites(Outta maybe my top 10). Fight Club.....wow.
