Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted January 6, 2005 Positively Kanyon 4 posts -- One of the most loyal readers of the site An underrated Astroboy fanatic. Thanks for the compliement guys... Always like to check in here from time to time, and plus my job is so boring and I just tend to browse Smart Marks Forums a fair bit... There's always something good to read on here... And how awesome is that giant Astro Boy!!! Thank you for the compliments. This is kind of turning into a talk about whatever you want thread with Astroboy just happening to be the main theme. Really, this is the main draw and the thread that's holding www.thesmartmarks.com together. And how awesome is that giant Astro Boy!!! I wonder just how big it it is and where it's located at. I found it on a Japanese site so I'm going to have to go back and check to see if I can use a translation tool to find out some info. THat'll take a little time to find it again though it shouldn't be too bad.

A red headed (I think, it's hard to tell) Japanese woman. That's pretty cool. That actually makes the last 3 pictures of women in this thread all Japanese red heads. WP -- Can not resist woman with long, curled reddish hair. Has to be just the right tint though.
Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted January 7, 2005 Was watching a j-flick called Hana & Alice the other night and this scene made me think of this thread. Sweeet. That is one awesome pic. Thanks for posting it. If I ever see that flick flotaing around in the local Wal - Mart bin I'll make sure to pick it up. Please don't leave us all hanging. Was the Astroboy balloon? just there for a second in the background or did he actually do something in the movie? Much accolades for the picture. I'm still in amazement of it. Guest wildpegasus Report post Posted January 9, 2005 Stolen from Atoman from the Astroboy-online.com forum. It's about episodes and censorship from the 1960s show. Ohaio, Tomodachi(Hi, friends) I decided to post a new thread about the remaining half of the 60's series that wasn't dubbed,(almost 100 eps.)since I've been watching them on dvd. That's right, we may complain about the butchering of 80's Japanese episodes 1 and 2 and a few cuts here and there of other eps. of that series, but the 60's censors skipped nearly 100 eps. I won't summerise the eps. here, but talk about why they censored them. Here's one in perticular: The Yellow Horse. It's about Astro going undercover to bust drug smuggling gangsters. Ok one thing the censors probably didn't like was that Astro got naked, well sort of. Inspector Tawashi says that Astro's skin isn't human enough to go undercover as a human child, so he hands him some artificial skin made out of nylon, looks like a flesh colored body-stocking. Astro puts it on and Tawashi puts a wig on his head. Now he looks like a naked human boy. Astro checks himself out and coments on how well the nylon looks like real skin, then he pulls and stretches it. Well that seen alone probably made the censors crazy. The main reason it was banned was because later after fully clothed of course, Astro goes undercover to a drug den and gets himself injected, twice mind you, with a drug known as Yellow Horse. Hmm, looks like heroene to me. It really doesn't have an affect on him, but he acts crazy just the same. Ok in the 60's in my country there was a growing drug culture, and the last thing the censors wanted was kids seeing there idol doing heroene. I'm pretty sure this was banned in the states, because I didn't see it listed here: http://www.astroboy.tv/ I wish I could post some images of the "naked" scene and the injection scenes. The story was from the manga, so you can see it there if you can't watch it. I forgot which volume though, sorry WP -- Interesting stuf about the heroine.. You can find some of the controversial pics here. For the red x's just copy the address of the former picture (under properties) and paste in the address bar at the top of the computer screen. If one thing's for sure you'd never see of those scenarios in TV today. http://www.astroboy-online.com/forums/inde...ct=ST&f=1&t=988 WP -- I'm curious about how many people are actually reading this thread and who you are. Guest Monday Night Jericho Report post Posted January 9, 2005 I just sat down the watch Grave of the Fire Flies (came a few days ago) and guess what... The damn DVD doesn't work. It's all scratched and there are constant glitches. Shit, I was really in the mood for it, too. Anyway, I have a question for everyone: when you're watching anime, and you have the option between the regular version (Japanese with subtitles) and the English dub - which do you choose? AlwaysPissedOff 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2005 Eh, it doesn't matter with me most of the time, but there are shows where I won't watch the subs for at all(Slayers, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, unedited Kenshin, and any of the Tenchi series). It's nothing against the Japanese VAs who worked on said shows, it's just that the English ones sound better(IMHO, obviously).

Anyway, I have a question for everyone: when you're watching anime, and you have the option between the regular version (Japanese with subtitles) and the English dub - which do you choose? Almost always subbed. There are a lot of anime dubs that are nortorious for absolutely ruining a show. The one problem I do have with subs though is I often know what is said by the charactors before they finish saying it themselves When I don't mind dubs A) When the narrator talks. I think I actually prefer dubs here. Dubs usually aren't as good though when discussing emotion. That's when I want my subs B) When it's well done aka Monoke which seemed like a good job to me. I can't compare it to the subbed version but I know I was perfectly happy with the dub. Dragonball Z, the original Bubblegum Crisis which I can verify are examples of shows better watched subbe. It's all scratched and there are constant glitches Ready for a little bit of insanity that upsets the very fabric of life? Read this very thread on the smartmarks about injured DVDs. http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?...0entry1734110

I've seen another dub of the show and it's not as good. Commonturk > Bruce or Brute. THat's one example of a dub improving on a sub's name.

It's nothing against the Japanese VAs who worked on said shows, it's just that the English ones sound better(IMHO, obviously). As long as the dub is pretty good I think you're fairly safe. It's just that you gotta watch out for horrable dubs out there that can absolutely wreck a show. WP's Anime Reccomendations of the Day! PERFECT BLUE -- First off, warnings because this show is very disturbing at points. Don't watch it front of your younger siblings or kids. Two versions exist. One I think is NC-17 and the other one is restricted or unrated. The dub seemed pretty good in this though I hear there's a quote at the end that comes off better in Japanese. Lots of nice physcological suspense in this. BLOOD REIGN CURSE OF THE YOMA -- I really liked this one because of its atmosphere, imagination and what it made me think about. I don't think everyone would like it as much as me though. BUBBLEGUM CRISIS -- ORIGINAL SERIES -- THis was just fun and an example of a sub definitely being better than a dub. Not the best series ever (uncompleted) or anything but the music in it I really liked. It gets a little repititive after awhile but there are a couple of songs here I really took a liking too. It's weird. I can only listen to them a few times over because it becomes a little annoying but whenever I want to feel good I just pop in that song on the first DVD and listen to it a few times. Works every time. The combination of the animation/action in the background, people having a good time and boomers on the loose just make for a happy WP ready to take on the world. MILLENIUM ACTRESS -- This may have been from the same director as Perfect Blue. A lot tamer than Perfect this is a love story with a different feel to it because of the way it's filmed and it's creativity. Give this one a shot. An unknown underrated flick. Even if you don't like love stories, pick this one up. You won't regret it. Terrific piece of work. Resident Evil 4 in 2 days guys! I'm pumped. 9.8 at IGN who are kind of tough on Resident Evil games. Anybody else excited for this?

I'm pumped. 9.8 at IGN who are kind of tough on Resident Evil games. Anybody else excited for this? Perfect Blue, that's a good pick, not your typical anime, not for your typical anime fan. The dubbing in that film was excellent, the voices matched the characters very well. When I first watched it I had mostly watched anime's such as Ninja Scroll, Akira, Gundam, Macross etc. I was used to lots of action, violence and gore, as a result when I first started watching Perfect Blue and saw a bunch of J-Pop girls dancing around, I thought "Oh shit! this is for teeny girls, why the hell did I waste my money on this?" I was completely wrong of course, it's one of the best anime out there (granted I have not seen them all) excellent story, excellent characters, good plot twists, great animation. If you haven't seen it yet I really reccomend that you do, just keep a bit of an open mind, a friend of mine who really likes anime couldn't stand this one, I don't think he knew what to make of it. Anyways, I guess thats my mini review, now go watch it.

Resident Evil got a 9.8 huh. might have to check it out, wish it wasn't for the gamecube though simply for the fact that i don't like their controller as much, particularily the shoulder buttons, but that's being really nitpicky though. I'm just petrified that it's going to lose some of its fear effect by reading the reviews because if it does it's just not resident. Nobody outright said it's not as scary but by reading some of the changes I feel there's a chance some of the fright factor might be gone. The reviews only seem to be concentrating on everything else besides the fear factor. Bottom line. Resident Evil without fright is like Benoit without the intensity. The two just don't go together. Let's just hope for the best. WP -- I'm curious about how many people are actually reading this thread and who you are. If you are reading it please just make a quick post saying that you are indeed reading. Thanks very much. All cooperation is sincerely appreciated. Remember this is now a Samurai Jack combined with an Astroboy thread so feel free to talk about Samurai Jack as well. I'm sure it will have it's scary moments, they all did. Let's hope so. Guest The Ohtani of Time Report post Posted January 10, 2005 Eh, it doesn't matter with me most of the time, but there are shows where I won't watch the subs for at all(Slayers, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, unedited Kenshin, and any of the Tenchi series). Crashed on the floor when I moved in This little bunk alone with some strange new friends Stay up too late, and I'm too thin We promise each other it's til the end Now we're spinning empty bottles It's the five of us With pretty eyed boys girls die to trust I can't resist the day No, I can't resist the day Jenny screams out and it's no pose 'Cause when she dances she goes and goes Beer through the nose on an inside joke I'm so excited, I haven't spoken And she's so pretty, and she's so sure Maybe I'm more clever than a girl like her The summer's all in bloom The summer is ending soon It's alright and it's nice not to be so alone But I hold on to your secrets in white houses Maybe I'm a little bit over my head I come undone at the things he said And he's so funny in his bright red shirt We were all in love and we all got hurt I sneak into his car's black leather seat The smell of gasoline in the summer heat Boy, we're going way too fast It's all too sweet to last It's alright And I put myself in his hands But I hold on to your secrets in white houses Love, or something ignites in my veins And I pray it never fades in white houses My first time, hard to explain Rush of blood, oh, and a little bit of pain On a cloudy day, it's more common than you think He's my first mistake Maybe you were all faster than me We gave each other up so easily These silly little wounds will never mend I feel so far from where I've been So I go, and I will not be back here again I'm gone as the day is fading on white houses I lie, put my injuries all in the dust In my heart is the five of us In white houses And you, maybe you'll remember me What I gave is yours to keep In white houses In white houses In white houses

Crashed on the floor when I moved in This little bunk alone with some strange new friends Stay up too late, and I'm too thin We promise each other it's til the end Now we're spinning empty bottles It's the five of us With pretty eyed boys girls die to trust I can't resist the day No, I can't resist the day Jenny screams out and it's no pose 'Cause when she dances she goes and goes Beer through the nose on an inside joke I'm so excited, I haven't spoken And she's so pretty, and she's so sure Maybe I'm more clever than a girl like her The summer's all in bloom The summer is ending soon It's alright and it's nice not to be so alone But I hold on to your secrets in white houses Maybe I'm a little bit over my head I come undone at the things he said And he's so funny in his bright red shirt We were all in love and we all got hurt I sneak into his car's black leather seat The smell of gasoline in the summer heat Boy, we're going way too fast It's all too sweet to last It's alright And I put myself in his hands But I hold on to your secrets in white houses Love, or something ignites in my veins And I pray it never fades in white houses My first time, hard to explain Rush of blood, oh, and a little bit of pain On a cloudy day, it's more common than you think He's my first mistake Maybe you were all faster than me We gave each other up so easily These silly little wounds will never mend I feel so far from where I've been So I go, and I will not be back here again I'm gone as the day is fading on white houses I lie, put my injuries all in the dust In my heart is the five of us In white houses And you, maybe you'll remember me What I gave is yours to keep In white houses In white houses In white houses Still doesn't ring a bell, who sings it? Sorry about that. I forgoty to say who it was. Jessics Carlton sings it. Love the song. Want a picture? Yes, picture please. Sorry, I meant to say Vanessa Carlton Here's a pic!
