EdwardKnoxII 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/story.jsp...111.htm&sc=1110 Seven Teens Die in N.C. Police Chase By PAUL NOWELL TROUTMAN, N.C. (AP) - A car trying to outrun a police officer ran off a road and crashed early Monday, killing all seven teenagers inside, the Highway Patrol said. The driver was identified as a 15-year-old, and the father of one of the victims said none of the teens had licenses and the group had been borrowing cars for joyrides. A police officer from Troutman began chasing the car after seeing the 2001 Dodge Intrepid weaving in its lane, the patrol said. ``They passed us going 85 to 100 miles an hour with the police car passing us,'' said a witness, Brandon Jackson. Troutman police Chief Eric Henderson said Officer Keith Bills chased the car for about a mile on U.S. 21 until it flipped over after hitting an embankment, crashed into a tree and then skidded to a stop upside down in a creek. Bills, however, said he tried to stop the car only briefly, following it about 500 yards before it sped out of sight. ``It was swerving, slowing down and speeding up, just erratic driving,'' Bills told the Statesville Record & Landmark. Bills said he did not see the crash, but found the wreckage later. The Highway Patrol identified the dead as driver John Lindsey Myers, 15, and passengers David Wayne Summers, 14, Quentin Maurice Reed, 18, Antonio Miller, 13, Domnick Hurtt, 17, Erica Stevenson, 15, and Antoinette Griffin, 13, all from Statesville. All were pronounced dead at the scene, and none was wearing a seat belt, the Highway Patrol said. Howard Hurtt said his son and the boy's friends had recently been borrowing cars from people they knew and going for rides. ``They were just out joyriding and a cop pulls them over and here we have seven deaths. I lost my only son,'' Hurtt said. Dyrita Ellis, 31, who came to the scene with her teenage daughter and a cousin, said the five boys who died were a tight-knit group. ``We just saw them yesterday,'' she said. ``They were happy and laughing. ... It looks like they were out having fun last night, just doing their Christmas holiday break.'' The car had been moved by midmorning, but 50-foot skid marks showed where it abruptly veered off the highway. Glass was embedded in the tree's trunk, and car parts were visible around the creek. ``You see these kids driving these fast cars and they have no sense,'' said Bucky Edwards, who stopped by to survey the damage. ``It's so sad.'' Troutman, about 35 miles north of Charlotte, has about 1,600 residents.

Gert T 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 "They were just out joyriding, and a cop pulls them over, and here we have seven deaths." I don't want to take this out of context as these families are problem deep in grief, but JUST out joyriding?

kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 I also liked this gem: The driver was identified as a 15-year-old, and the father of one of the victims said none of the teens had licenses and the group had been borrowing cars for joyrides. So unless I'm reading this wrong somebody's family(-ies) was letting a 15-year old kid borrow the car for joyrides?...

Gert T 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 Of course the parents will sue because what business do the cops have chasing a weaving car going 80+ mph... The kids were speeding to your house to keep you from shooting yourself figuring out playoff tiebreakers. Sorry had to get a bit of inter-forum talk in! kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 God, I can't help but keep posting these quotes because every time I re-read this article I just get more and more disgusted: ``We just saw them yesterday,'' she said. ``They were happy and laughing. ... It looks like they were out having fun last night, just doing their Christmas holiday break.'' Golly gee, I wonder why they are "happy" -- if they had parents like these I'd be giddy 24/7, too. I'm sure mommy and daddy even bought them booze and smokes. On a personal note, years ago these guys who were one grade lower than me in high school were drag racing in a residential area, skidded out of control, crashed and died. One of them I got along with although we never hung out. The other two were stoner losers that I did not get along with -- if you are familiar with my "fast-food" job stories of me doing stuff to people's food, these two were usually the customers I did the food to when they would come in late and make a mess of the store. When I read the story in the paper and talked to a few of my ex-high school buddies they were "shocked" I didn't give two shits about this, except for the one guy I knew. Another time this kid I knew got into drug dealing and owed this guy a LOT of money so he shot himself. Fuck him, too. So, in real life I'm a heartless bastard, although I did feel bad when this really quiet, smart kid I knew died from a tumor less than a year after graduating high school. It never ceases to amaze me how it's always the ones that don't deserve the sicknesses seem to get them...
Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Report post Posted December 30, 2003 Welcome to the land of Cold Hearted Bastards. Although I don't think I'd spit in someones food, I'd just punch em in the mouth. (Checks burgers I buy from now on)
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 Welcome to the land of Cold Hearted Bastards. Welcome? Dude, I'm the town's mayor. Hell, I get joy out of giving holiday bell-ringers the cold shoulder when walking right by them and not acknowledging their existence, or that stupid jingling sound. Although I don't think I'd spit in someones food, I'd just punch em in the mouth. (Checks burgers I buy from now on) As long as you don't come into a place every weekend 15 minutes before midnight, stay 20 minutes after the doors close and make a !@#$ mess in a dining area that was already cleaned, the only junk on your burger will be the chemicals that were already in the meat patty... Downhome 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 I wish that they had took more teens like them with em, and the parents also if they allowed them to do bullshit. I love when morons take theirselves out in an act of true stupidity. I'd rather have these stupid shits kill theirselves, instead of them hitting some innocent car full of small children, or hell, ANYONE else who are minding their fucking business. I have no sympathy for the stupid, it's better them than others.
EricMM 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 These kids were seriously a risk to everyone on any road near them. I'm not going to say that they DESERVED (spelling!) to die, but I will say that they hold all the blame and their parents shouldn't be particularly shocked. Guest SP-1 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 This is . . . terrible. I hate reading things like this. The cop was doing what he was supposed to do, and the kids were breaking at least two laws off the top of my head. Probably alot more. The father's comments may have been taken out of context but if not . . . ugh. It seems the parenting probably had alot to do with the outcome.
EricMM 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 I wonder if they'll do drug/alcohol tests? And if they're positive, whether or not the Parents will still deny claim they were just having a good time?

Skywarp! 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 The cops should beat those parents over the heads with batons for allowing 15 year olds with no licenses to drive on a regular basis. We're lucky that they are the only ones who died, and didn't take anyone else on that highway with them.
Cran Da Maniac 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 This story is all over the news down here (I live about 45 mins away from this town). They interviewed the dad of the 13 yr old on the news down here. They made it out like it was a big tragedy, and that they hold the cops responsible for this. What I don't get is that they all got in a car with a 15 yr old unlicensed driver in the first place. And the bit about them letting them borrow the car, it's kinda funny cuz the news reported that the car was reported stolen several hours after the accident

Guest Ghettoman Report post Posted December 30, 2003 I don't know whats sadder, the fact that this happen, or the fact that all of you have formed your own conclusion on who these people were based on a tiny bit of information. Not one thought that there might of been one or two of them telling the driver to stop, not one thought that some of them simply couldn't grasp just what they were doing and how dangerous it was. Instead we get posts about how dumb they all were and why they deserved it......yikes.
BX 0 Report post Posted December 30, 2003 The fact that the 15-year old kid was driving, when there was an 18 year old in the car, that's bad enough. It's a shame these kids had to die, and they weren't "idiots", just trying to get away from The Man. They did steal the car, after all. And aren't the cops supposed to stop pursuit after it exceeds 75 mph? I believe that's the policy in NC.
