NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 The details of the offer say it would give Gibbs full control. When he coached the Skins before he had Bobby Beathard as the GM. I am not really sure of the details in the statement, "full control" though.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 Bad Marvin!... when I went to post it, this wasnt here.. Its not my fault. I blame my ISP.. And how much "full control" can he have with Dan Snyder running the show?
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 Well if Dick Vermeil can come back (twice), maybe ol' Joe can, too. Or maybe not...
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 Let's not forget, Gibbs won 3 superbowls with 3 different QB. If Ramsey keeps getting better, he will be arguably better then Doug Williams and/or Mark Rypien, even though Rypien had a ludicrous season that superbowl year. I know it remains to be seen, but as a Skins fan, it is hard to contain the excitement.
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 Compared to the shit that Spurrier was throwing out there, Gibbs can't get worse than that. I guess we won't know until he gets out there. We also won't know if Snyder will loosen the leash up a little or not. Jerry Jones, a notorious control freak, loosened the leash a little and let Parcells take over and the Cowboys made the playoffs. Perhaps Snyder will take a cue from that. NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 I wonder if Gibbs will bring back his Singleback offense formation or if he will try to work in something brand new. The man was a fucking genius and knew his x's & o's. He is studies the game and knows how to set up gameplans.

kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2004 (edited) Gag. Normally I don't bother with local columnists because most, if not all, of them are horrid, but I stumbled across this one by accident. kkk-ommentary in boldface Lewis' firing makes no sense Wednesday, January 07, 2004 By Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette I wish I would have thought to call Detroit Lions owner William Clay Ford before the team's offices closed yesterday. It would have been fascinating to hear what he had to say about the firings of assistant coaches Tim Lewis and Kenny Jackson by the Steelers. It was Ford, who last summer, in a rare moment of sniping among NFL owners, labeled the Steelers' record of minority hiring as "terrible." That was in response to the league fining Lions president Matt Millen $200,000 for failing to interview a black candidate before hiring Steve Mariucci as the Lions' coach. The fine reportedly came at the urging of the NFL's diversity committee, which is chaired by Dan Rooney. Now, Lewis and Jackson -- two of the four black assistants on Bill Cowher's staff -- are out. (Oh no! Black assistant coaches have been fired!) Do you think Ford's take would have been worth the 50 cents for the paper? That isn't to suggest Rooney, Cowher and the Steelers are racists. I truly don't believe that. Nor is it to suggest that Lewis and Jackson should have lifetime jobs because they are black. No coach of any color deserves that. (Ahhh, the old washing of hands before getting them dirty) Actually, it's pretty hard to work up a good fit about the Jackson firing as wide receivers coach. All season, we heard that Plaxico Burress wasn't running good patterns, that he couldn't run the fade route, that he wasn't getting open nearly as often as he thought. When a star player underachieves, someone is going to take the fall. It turned out to be Jackson, whose head yesterday was proof that Cowher really didn't believe those little lies he told after the final game about Burress not having such a dismal season. But the Lewis firing as defensive coordinator is different. It makes Rooney, Cowher and the Steelers look bad. When I heard the Steelers fired a coordinator, my first thought was Mike Mularkey. (not me) Neither he nor his offense was very good this season. Mularkey never seemed to figure out what he wanted the offense to be -- a pass-first offense or a run-oriented offense. Certainly, the offense never achieved the precious balance that Mularkey preached. It didn't just regress badly from the previous season. It was the biggest reason the Steelers finished 6-10. (And a banged up offensive line had NOTHING to do with it?) Did Mularkey deserve to be fired because of one bad year? Absolutely not. But would it have been a surprise if he had been dismissed, especially considering Cowher's history of firing offensive coordinators? Again, absolutely not. By comparison, the timing of the Lewis firing just didn't seem right. It would have made more sense after last season. His defense gave up 31 points to the Baltimore Ravens and 33 points to the Cleveland Browns and 34 points to the Tennessee Titans down the stretch and kept the Steelers from going deeper in the playoffs. But Lewis and the defense bounced back strong this season. (According to some game stats I just looked up on NFL.com Pittsburgh's defense gave up 27 points [on defense] to KC, 33 points to Cleveland, 33 points to St. Louis and 30 points to San Fran.) I know the defense contributed to some painful losses. The Denver game and the Cincinnati game at home come to mind. (I didn't even include these games because of the scores) I also know the defense was more conservative than any we've seen from the Steelers in a long time. Sacks were down. But I'm convinced Lewis got the most out of what he had on his defense. Was it his fault he was given lousy cornerbacks -- Chad Scott and Dewayne Washington -- by Cowher, the coach/personnel chief? Was it his fault Joey Porter got shot the week before the opener and wasn't the same player? Was it his fault Jason Gildon got old in a hurry? If you want to blame Lewis for something, blame him for not getting Deshea Townsend into the lineup at cornerback sooner. I refuse to do that, though. Only one man deserves that kind of blame -- the head coach. Of course, we all know the one coach Cowher will never blame. Cowher. (Can't blame the head coach for finding scapegoats because too often head coaches are often used in that fashion) In that sense, it was predictable that the Steelers would fire coaches. Changes are inevitable when a team with Super Bowl plans ends up in the standings with the Arizona Cardinals and Ford's Lions. Cowher decided Lewis and Jackson would be his sacrifices. He doesn't need any justification, really. He can always say it was differences of opinion or, to quote the Steelers' news release yesterday, "in the best interest of the team." Now, Cowher must find replacements. How much do you want to bet they'll be black coaches? Do you think Rooney and Cowher have a choice? (I hope their replacements are lily white so Ron can accuse the Rooneys and Cowher of being RACISTS without actually calling them that...)
