Rumsfeld encouraged Time's choice

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Before Time magazine named the American soldier the "Person of the Year" for 2003, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld helped encourage that idea, magazine executives acknowledged Thursday.

Rumsfeld, in a Pentagon meeting with Time's top executives late last year, had correctly suspected he was among the candidates for the magazine's honor, and offered what one participant called some "free advice" as the meeting came to an end.

Time Managing Editor James Kelly told CNN that Rumsfeld's unsolicited suggestion to honor the troops was the "first time in my recollection that someone who was obviously a candidate has volunteered someone else."

Kelly said the troops were already in the running, but that Rumsfeld's unprompted comment helped tipped the scale. "In my mind, there were two leading candidates," Kelly recalled, "the American soldier, and the secretary of defense. He did not know that, and in my meeting with him, he volunteered" that the honor should go to the American soldier.

One military source referred to Rumsfeld's recommendation as "a pre-emptive strike" made before Time could inform him that he himself was a candidate for the honor.

Kelly said there was no further discussion at the Pentagon meeting as to Rumsfeld's prospects, nor his suggestion to honor the troops.

Time is owned by Time Warner, CNN's parent company.

Intriguing.

I used to have a humorous graphic that said, "Wow, no shit?" I've seemed to have lost the URL. Oh well.

I found this situation odd because a lot of the people on Rumsfeld side of the political fence didn't like Time's choice. It was accused of being "fake patriotism" by some.

I call for the resignation of Rumsfeld over this.

But... But Time is a liberal rag making partisan attacks against the administration! Thousands of deluded Republicans CAN'T be wrong!

Time would of used the article to bash Rumseld. Read the story on the soldiers, they take quite a few pot shots at the Bush administration.

But it was his suggestion. And he was also a nominee for Person of the Year.

Honestly, this whole LIBERAL CONSPIRACY~! thing goes too damn far sometimes.

For people that didn't believe in the reasons for going to war, this news just seems like America trying to make American's feel better for going to war by calling the soldiers Man of the Year or whatever.

I could care less what Time does (I don't read news magazines). I just found it interesting Rumsfeld suggested the idea. Especially since people were calling it "fake patriotism."

Wasn't UBL a nominee in 01?

Personof the year isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.

Back in '94/95 Newt got it, and he's no friend of Time Magazine.

Back in the '80s someone (I think it was Kadafi) got it and Time faced a huge backlash, so I can understand in part why this "award" is not as edgy as it could be...

Well Man of the Year is never supposed to be the most admired, just the most significant. So Bin Laden would've been a huge nominee for the award.

But according to Howie, bin Laden would have to be first proven guilty in an international court of law before we could say he committed jaywalking, let alone acts of terror...

As long as we are spouting off irrelevant partisan bullshit for shits and giggles, according to your president, "the human being and fish can coexist peacefully."
