What is Outkast?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I've been kind of off the music scene lately. Actually you could probably mention about 20 new bands and I'd only know about 2 of them.

Well anyways I saw the OutKast "Hey Ya" video the other day. And then I heard the song being played over the Sugar Bowl and I must say.....I loved it. I dunno if it's that Sports have a weird way of making me like whatever song is played over the video packages or just that this was a great song.

I found out today when I heard it twice on the radio and had to crank it both times.

This is my first exposure to OutKast. So I was wondering......are all of their songs this good? What kind of music is this? What kind of music do they generally play?

Should I get their CD?

Outkast is alternative/atlanta hip hop, with sometime forays into more experimental territory. Get their three latest albums. Before that they were kinda different, still good, but not something I'd recommend based on liking that song.

edit: Aquemini, Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below are the names of the three I'm talking about.

True, but one of the big things about OutKast is the lack of those stereotypical things which people hate about rap and hip-hop. They're very accessable.

I'm still trying to figure out how their label managed to get them some play on Alternative/New Rock stations. I like their stuff, but it's not exactly what you expect from the stations. Then again, Sarah McLachlan started out by getting play on "alternative" stations in Canada, so who knows anymore?

Outkast is an Atlanta based rap duo who are heavily influenced by the 70's soul funk sound. If anything I would like to compare them to the Beastie Boys of the South. Outkast has a sound that is outside of the box if you will, they do not look like they stereotypical rap artist, you will not see them wearing throwback jerseys or carrying guns or acting violent.

Outkast along with Goodie Mob which includes Cee-Lo form the Dungeon Family. They have been working with each other for years and often appear on each others albums or remixes. Other artist Outkast has worked with on a semi-regular basis are Erkah Badu, The Roots, Common.

Look for these songs:

Wheels of Steel, Jazzy Belle, Ms Jackson, Elevators, Rosia Parks, Neck of the Woods, The Whole World, BOB, Art of Story Telling.

If you like Outkast might as well get Black Eye Peas, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Del the Funky Homosapian, Jurassic 5.

What?

I generally don't like rap but I like DMX.

He told me that it's rap and I hate all rap. Not true I like DMX.

And as a matter of fact....I don't think I have any black friends.....strange....

Outkast is *the* crossover rap act of our time. I don't think anyone else has received such unanimous critical acclaim and sold so many albums to so many different types of music fans.

For some non-rappy inroads into Outkast, if you're not a big hip-hop fan: "Hey Ya," "The Way You Move," "B.O.B.," "So Fresh, So Clean," "The Whole World," "Ms. Jackson," and "Spottieotiedopalicious." All except the last one were huge crossover pop hits, and I chose the last one because it's one of their most interesting pieces. Should appeal to you no matter what you like. If you like what you hear, buy, as suggested, any of the three latest albums, and you're sure to like what you hear. A few of their best straight up rap tracks (my favorites, really) off those are "Rosa Parks," "Skew it on the Bar-B," "Humble Mumble," and "The Rooster."

Also good off the new album are "Take Off Your Cool" and "Reset," which are downtempo chill songs that I think anyone could love.

What was that about? The man was just giving evidence that he doesn't hate all rap.

Anyway, Dama, of the three mentioned discs, I'd recommend Stankonia. I thought it was the best, and it has a good number of more "pop" sounding stuff, pleasing to the ear, to sort of ease you in to their very alternative style.

Yeah, if you just want to up and buy one, go with Stankonia. It has the strongest start of any of their albums and definitely feels the most instantly accessible. It's great all-around, too.

This post is fucking funny. It may be the booze talking but FUCK...this is all too ironically humorous or something. A bland ass country white boy asking about Outkast nearly 10 years after they broke out. Shit...this thread is funny.

And I can't believe I fucking like Alan Jackson!

That's the most disturbing thing you have EVER said.

God damn man...Think of the fucking children

Well at least you didn't say Tobey Keith. :shudders:

I'm actually not a country boy. Just b/c I'm from Oklahoma doesn't mean that I'm a country bumpkin. I've lived in the city my whole life.........

I mean hell.......Arkansas has more inbred hicks and Texas has more cowboys.

Oklahoma is really just like Kansas......a whole lot of nothing.

you will not see them wearing throwback jerseys

That's funny cause on HBO's Real Sports they showed a piece on throwback jerseys and in particular Mitchell& Ness and it said Big Boi pretty much was the first famous person to wear a throwback. He wore one in a Goodie Mob video back in 1997 (It was a Nolan Ryan Astros jersey btw) and in one of OutKast's album booklets Big Boi's wearing a Ryne Sandberg jersey. I've never see Dre wear one, but Dre doesn't dress really like anything I've seen before, but I've seen Big Boi wear 'em all the time.

^that was years ago, before every white boy was wearing one. I think Andre 3000 is in his preppy phrase now.

Preppy how? He's in his eccentric, wild, unconventional Sly and the Family Stone stage. There isn't ANTYTHING preppy about how he is dressing.

They had some mtv special a while back where they followed Outkast around and

they went to a throwback jersey store and the owners said that Outkast must have

purchased something like $30,000 worth of product from them.

what edwin basically said: huge crossover appeal. everybody loves outkast, it's like the damn beatles.

and, at least in her 'fumbling towards ecstasy' phase (which was when she started getting airplay), sarah was much more alternative than pop.

Andre looks like a confused spoiled boyfriend of the Hilton sisters from the Hamptons now. No longer does he wear misc clothes from the Goodwill, now its polo jerseys and slacks from Tom Ford.

What exactly is a throwback jersey?

I mean....I have a Donovan McNabb jersey.....does that count?

I don't see a problem with a white guy wearing a sports jersey....they do when they you know....play the sport.

duuuuuuude. a throwback jersey is exactly what the name implies. A jersey which is a throwback, meaning that it evokes memories of a bygone era. You ARE an illiterate bumpkin.

Yes I'm illeterate. I can't read. That's how I was able to make this post and read all of your posts......jesus.........yeah I don't know half of this stuff because I frankly don't pay attention or give a fuck about half of it. I went through High School not paying attention to this shit and now I'm going through the rest of my life without paying attention to it.

But for some reason you'd rather incite a flame war than actually add anything. Thank you.
