Hockey-Minnesota and Boston. Back in like 1981. This one went into the stands.

 

Baseball-Atlanta and San Diego. 1985. The benches cleared like 3 times, and players and fans where arrested.

 

College Hoops-Ohio St. and Minnesota. This took place back in like 1971. A player on the Gophers commited a dirty foul, and the benches cleared. Really ugly, and Minnesota the rest of the year, ended up playing with only like 7 guys.

I remember a pretty good brawl after one of the Bowe/Golota fights. Entourage, hell, even the ANNOUNCERS got in on some shit.

 

George Foreman had his dukes up while Larry Merchant and Ol' boy whose name escapes me sat there in terror. Jim Gray was pushing people over and shit, it was nuts.

My choice is a new one: Binghampton vs Philly in an AHL game. This is the one that made it to Sportscenter because the goalie did the flying leap over the pile of players. There were twenty two fighting majors handed out (yes, that's 22), 14 guys got game misconducts, there were a total of 379 minutes in penalties handed out. Just a never ending stream of brawls at the end of the game.

I loved the Wings/Aves brawl the game after Claude Lemieux made a bastard play and ran Draper's face into the boards.

 

It was great watching McCarty pound Lemieux and Shannahan throwing a flying lariot at Roy.

 

Needless to say I'm a Wing's fan.

My choice is a new one: Binghampton vs Philly in an AHL game. This is the one that made it to Sportscenter because the goalie did the flying leap over the pile of players. There were twenty two fighting majors handed out (yes, that's 22), 14 guys got game misconducts, there were a total of 379 minutes in penalties handed out. Just a never ending stream of brawls at the end of the game.

Yeah, I was going to mention that one, too. Also, anytime 2 goalies fight it out is entertaining, so I'm going to mention Felix Potvin vs. Ron Hextall from a few years ago, since I don't think that one's been singled out yet. Tie Domi vs. the fan in Philly was awesome, too.

That was an awesome fucking spectacle. Get this one on tape if you haven't seen it. The Bowe/Golota fight itself is worth the viewing. He was kicking Bowe's ass the whole fight but couldn't stop low-blowing him. At the end, I believe Golota finally gets disqualified and all the cornermen rush the ring. Golota gets nailed with I believe a cellphone and the fans start rioting. All you see is people getting their asses whipped in the stands. Golota fans vs Bowe fans, basically blacks against whites. Jim Lampley is freaking out because his kids are somewhere in the stands and he's worried about them and George wants to throw down.

Another good one is that minor league baseball game where the player got him by the pitch, turned around and nailed the catcher, and then charged the mound. He knew the catcher would stop him if he tried to charge the mound so right after he got hit I think he karate kicked the catcher then went after the pitcher. I've seen clips on this and it is hilarious.

I was living in Colorado, with 2 Wings fans, when this feud began. I agree with the Wings, and their fans, except for two things ... first, the hit by Lemieux wasn't meant to be as dirty as it ended up being. If memory serves, Draper spun at the last second and that's why he got his face rearranged. And I HATE Lemieux with a passion.

 

My second complaint with the whole deal is why it became McCarty's fight with Claude, rather than Draper. Lemieux is feeble, Draper could have kicked his ass, but instead sent his bigger stronger buddy to do it. I can understand in the immediate aftermath, when his face was all busted up, but the next year, it should have been Draper that fought Lemiuex, not Darren. Just my two cents.

If you dig fighting goalies, keep your eyes on Emery from Binghampton ... I think he's had one game with the Sens this year, but he's better known for his fisticuffs than he is for his netminding. The guy just straight up likes to fight, and looks for any excuse to do so.

The fight after the Hawaii bowl game this year was insane.

 

Seeing clips of a guy swing his helment, one guy slamming another guys head on the ground repeatedly not to mention the completely disarrayed shots the camera men were getting made it almost hilarious.

 

Honorable mention goes to Van Gundy's ankle hunting.

I remember at the VERY end of the broadcast, since they showed the riot in its entirety, Merchant actually THANKED Foremanon the air for protecting him, because he stood there looking imposing during the whole fracas, ready to whoop some ass.

 

The fight itself was a hoot, because Golota was just beating Bowe's ass pillar to post, and doing so in just a downright filthy fashion. Forearms, elbows, and FOUR blatant low blows that were called, and no fewer than a dozen that were either ignored or unnoticed. Golota had a trainwreck appeal. He wound up and headbutt Kirk Johnson with the very top of his head in another bout, and in his breakout fight, BIT Samson Po'uha on the neck in a fight that left them both utterly drenched in blood from head to toe. It's a shame he was completely undisciplined, because he could've been pretty damn good. Once he got in real trouble in a fight, he could never recover. Then he had a blood clot in his brain or some craziness after his abortion with Tyson where the crazy polak just quit.

Nevermind, Old school nailed it already. The Pawtuckett Red Sox shuffle kicking the catcher in the chest then spearing the hell out of the pitcher. Still, hilarious to this day. Red Sox should have called him up for the Yankee series so he could shuffle kick Posada and charge Clemens.

 

Kyle Farnsworth earlier this year, charging the batter before he could charge him. Bless stupid crazy Kyle.

Another good one is "Fan-Man", the guy who flew into the Holyfield-Bowe fight with a parachute and a fan to help him fly around. He got his ass beat quite nicely when he landed.

The Probert-McSorley bout that lasted forever (in hockey fight terms) was a true heavyweight classic.

 

Frank Shamrock-Tito Ortiz still stands up as a great fight in my mind.

McCarty was the enforcer by default, Detroit just didn't (and still doesn't) have anyone else to serve in that role. This year the Wings only have 22 fighting majors, tied for 26th in the league. (To compare, Calgary leads the league, with 44.) And of those 22, McCarty only has 3.

 

He's not a fighter along the lines of Worrel, or Shelley, or Oliwa. THOSE are the kind of players that I can understand taking a battle like this onto themselves, it's their only reason to be in the league. Not so with DMac - he's a grinder that is tough enough to fight if/when he needs to. I can understand why he would have to regulate as soon as it happened, but then it became HIS war with Claude, not Draper's. And that's crap, it's not like he was fighting a fighter - he was fighting Lemieux.

 

To me, Draper looked weak because he sent his bigger, tougher friend to fight a battle that he should have been fighting himself.

A couple months back I saw this show on TV about aboriginal players in the NHL, and they showed this one fight between Stan Jonathan and Pierre Bouchard from the '78 playoffs. Holee-shit, did Jonathan ever pound the shit out of Bouchard. He switched hands half-way through and by the time the linesmen came in to break it up, Bouchard was dripping blood all over them. It was awesome.

I saw this while sitting in a restaurant a couple weeks ago in a commercial for them, and had no idea what was going on, but I was marking out hardcore when I saw that goalie go flying over about five people!

 

What started that?!

 

Also, I was watching Off The Record on Friday while Jericho was hosting, and they had some boxer who's name I can't recall. Anyways, while they were talking about the risks people take before stepping into the ring, it showed a clip of him just drilling some guy three times after he was OBVIOUSLY out on his feet and the ref should have stepped in. It was brutal.

 

If anyone else saw that episode, they may be able to give you more insight on which fight that was.

Shaq v. Brad Miller - This was when Miller played for the Bulls. Shaq has been getting mugged all game and he finally just loses it. He starts throwing these haymakers, if they would have landed it would have been like Rudy T and Kermit Washington all over again. Bulls players are running all over the place trying to avoid Shaq like he is Juggernaut. Finally Charles Oakley steps in and grabs Shaq and basically saves Brad Millers life. If I was a coach in the NBA there would always be a place on my team for Charles Oakley.

 

Tim Belcher v. Chan Ho Park - I am a little fuzzy on the names so if someone else remembers better than me then by all means correct me. Park was playing for the Dodgers and I want to say that Belcher was playing for the Angels. During interleague Belcher gets hit by Park and charges the mound. Well Park is waiting and unleashes with roundhouse kicks at Belchers head. It looked straight out of a Fu movie. I do not remember if he connected well with any of them though. Belcher whined after the game about Park not fighting fair.

 

EDIT:

I am surprised no one has brought up Rudy T. and Kermit Washington. Kermit is at center court involved in some kind of scuffle Rudy T comes running down the court and Kermit unleashes arguably the most devastating punch in the history of sports. It ends Rudy T's playing career, and blackballs Kermit from the league. He still cannot get a job, and Rudy has helped him out. If I remember correctly Rudy almost lost his eye and suffered from headaches for a long period of time. The bruise/welt, or whatever it was on Rudy's face was huge.
