How do you explain to someone

Recommended Posts

Hey. I just had a very draining conversation with my father about wrestling. Basically, I told him about how WWE sucks most of the time, about the writers being shit, and how everything works, how the wriets decide who wins and loses etc. Then he said to me 'You've just told me that this sucks, and its basically a bunch of crap, so why do you watch it then?'

I can't really put it into words, but I will try here. I watch because once Im in, it consumes me. I love everything aout wrestling, matches, promos, storylines, championships, its everything I want and more. Sure, I have a life, and a very productive one, but wrestling is the one thing in my life that I can always go to and enjoy. Its my default. When I go on the web, I go here, or to other forums, or to dirt sheets. When Im at home and Im not doing anything else, I play SmackDown, I watch WWE, Ring Of Honor, ECW, anything I can get my hands on, anything in my house, I watch it. Once I complete High School and then my college degree, I want to learn how to wrestle on the weekends, and work of a week. I want to wrestle. I dont really care if Im successful or not, that doesn't worry me, but I do want to wrestle. I have other plans for my life, main plans, but wrestling is something that I will always want to do.

I'm a mark sometimes, a big stupid mark. Im not afraid to admit that. Sometimes I watch old shows, and someone like Jericho, Benoit, RVD, or someone else that I really enjoy watching perform, will come out. I can't help but smile. I can't help but feel happy.

Wrestling affects me on a deeper level sometimes. Just one month ago, I saw In Your House: Canadian Stampede. The Main Event came around, and they did a shot of Brian Pillman, Davey Boy Smith and Owen Hart all standing in a row, smiling their asses off. I almost lost it. I never knew these men, I wont know any of their families, and I'll never know who they were outside of wrestling, but still, I feel connected to them, they were there to entertain me, to make me feel happy. So, I feel connected.

I read Mick Foley's, and The Rock's comments on Owen Hart. I read of how he felt about his family, how they were the number one people in his world. Then, after the Main Event at Canadian Stampede, the camera caught a shot of Owen with his children in his arms, smiling the biggest smile. Again, I nearly lost it. I dont know why, or how, but I nearly did. I can't explain it.

After a great match, after a great promo, I can't help but feel happy. When two cruisers are going at it full throttle, my heart races. When The Rock hits a Rock Bottom and goes for the cover to win the WWE Championship, I want him to win, even though I know its all set up, its all a game.

So, I'm interested, why do you watch? What makes you so attracted to this crazy thing we call professional wrestling? How do you explain to someone why you watch?

If I'm ever posed that question I'll usually take a more hands on approach. If it's possible, I'll put something on and tell them to watch it and tell me what's wrong with it. Then I can counterpoint each argument as it comes up, cause I'm always better on the fly like that. I'll usually compare it to ballet, which will sometimes take someone off guard, cause most tend to downplay that similarity.

Oh, and don't be afraid of being a mark. Smarks are assholes.

Whenever I was younger the whole "Larger Than Life" aspect consumed me. Hulk Hogan was the biggest guy and nobody could ever hurt him and things of the sort. I liked rooting for the good guys and booing the bad guys. Then as I got older I started to see wrestling in a different point of view. I started viewing it athletically and liked the more technical aspect. I didn't care about who was cooler or who was supposed to be the "good guy" or "bad guy", I wanted the person who was the best to get to the top and win. I cheered Mr. Perfect even though he was a "bad guy", I wanted to see him win because I knew he was one of the best. I cheered Bret Hart during his anti-American run because I knew he was one of the best. I cheered Jericho in WCW because he was a good wrestler. Even though I never really liked Shawn Michaels, I would give him credit when he put on a hell of a good match. Just the whole physical aspect of it consumes me now. Whenever I tell someone I watch wrestling and they ask me why, I say because of the athleticism. People will try and write off wrestlers as not being "real athletes" because it is "fake", but whenever you show them a good match and the storytelling and psychology come together, they can't help but get consumed in it too. That is why I watch wrestling.

As Jeff Jarrett said on 'The Unreal Story Of Pro Wreslting, "For people that watch it, no explanation is needed. For those people that don't, no explanation will do"

Very well put.

I simply explain I have a love for all things entertainment and it really captures both interesting aspects of sport and acting, two things I have a passion for.

I don't believe in calling something horrible and watching it anyway though, so I've never had to explain myself there.

I honestly dont know why i watch. I have watched for soooo many years that it has become a habit, im addicted, like a drug. You start off with the soft stuff (WWE) and then slowly move into the harder (indys) and after a while you are a full blowen junkie watching 4 hours a day, lookin for any kind of wrestling too watch

I recall a similar discussion coming up a while ago, and Dames, along with Jarrett, put it better than I've ever heard or could hope to explain it as.

"Why am I a fan of professional wrestling?

It's rather simple for me. When everything comes together perfectly, the work in the ring, the story being told, the angle's progression...there is nothing better. It's art. "

My apologies to Dames, hopefully he didn't mind me using the quote.

I can't explain my love for wrestling...I've just always loved it. I'm addicted to it, somethings just send a chill down my spine.

Check the quote in my sig.

I love that Jarrett quote, and the Dames one is a really good one as well. I don't think I'll bother trying to convince my dad though.

Because I love professional wrestling. Simple as that. I'll watch the awful (late 2000 WCW, 2002 WWF/WWE) and the magnificent (2002 TNA, RoH whenever).

And if somebody brings up the "it's so fake" line, I make fun of them for wearing either a JTHM or Spongebob shirt. Shuts 'em right up.

My one-liner excuse when someone asks:

"Because I [fucking] feel like watching it."

The I'll ask a question like "Isn't that your excuse for watching gay porn all the time?"

then from there anything can happen.

I love when people want to know something like "How can you get into it when it isn't real, the end is already picked out and it isn't a real athletic contest?"

I then ask them if they saw a good movie lately.

Man...I forgot all about that Jarrett quote from the A&E special. Makes perfect sense.

I just tell people I watch it for the athletism mixed in with the drama, comedy, and entertainment aspects mixed in with it...not for T&A and stupid angles that make no sense and helps no one.

People seem to be more cool with it these days because I think it's gotten to the point where it's such a stupid argument that they don't have anything to say anymore. It's like...what's worse...a 50 Cent rap video or a Bra and Panties match? That pretty much sums it up.

I used to be a closet fan but now I feel if you don't like it, kiss my ass. Wrestling is one of the few things that makes me happy in life and in today's society in general there's not a lot that makes me feel the way that I do about wrestling.

I think that it's sad that when people give you shit about wrestling, they WONT talk bad about HBK vs. HHH on Raw...rather something stupid about T&A or something.

Good attitude, you know, I've found that people are a lot less derogatory about wrestling if you don't act like it's something to be ashamed of.

I say for the violence. When they say "it's fake, douche," I show them the Nick Mondo tribue Lars made (download it at www.nickmondo.com) and the stuff that Mondo took, leading to him quitting. It's hard for someone to say that taking lighttubes, weedwhackers, and a second story fall is fake.

Just everything that has to do with wrestling. I always try and enjoy the story being told behind a match. If the match sucks so be it..the guys involved still worked their butts off by going into a ring and risking their body, and I respect it. It's just something that gets in your blood. Once you get someone hooked to wrestling it's hard to lose 'em.
