Jobber of the Week

Dean loses poll & endorsement after Hulking Up

Recommended Posts

Yeah, but really, what's the sense in sitting here and whining about it?

You acknowledge the mistake and take a few jabs at yourself (which he can do on Letterman tonight), you refocus the debate on your plans and your positive aspects (which he could do tonight at the debate), and you try to accentuate your positive, "loving husband" side (which he will, probably, do on ABC's Primetime Live tonight, in an interview with he and his wife.) As I said in the column, he has one chance tonight to turn around this catastrophic error. What he does with it will determine if he's fit to be the nominee or not.

So it's not necessarily the most complete explaination of my thoughts, and it probably has many errors in it (which are, of course, due to my lack of oratory skill), but this column should suffice as my response to the events on which I haven't spoken.

So the past week hasn't changed your opinion/vote?

I've already cast my vote.

I still can't bring myself to call what he did a catastropichal error. However I probably have given this whole thing too much time myself, so I guess I will stop.

I was really looking forward to Dean in Beantown at the Democratic Convention, too.

The Howard Dean being a wrestler jokes have gotten old. You can't go to the well too many times and expect the punchline to be fresh.

So you're saying my new sig shouldn't be a picture of Dean with a Slim Jim in his hand, saying "Snap Into It... OOHhh yeah!"?

Eh. He looks a lot less ridiculous hyping up the crowd when you realize that he's pointing at supporters and that the whole thing has the atmosphere of a rambunctious pep rally. The rebel yell is still brutally retarded, but I think he can be forgiven for a two-second transgression.

This is Dean's "potatoe" moment. It will NEVER go away.

I still don't see what was so bad about it. Is it bad to show energy as a politician? The crowds at political rallies can cheer and whoo, why can't Dean make some noise too?

There was some poll on Inside Politics that said that only 50% of those polled thought Dean had a presidential personality after Monday night. Was it that horrible to get his supporters excited again after a fairly bad collapse of what was a sure thing a month earlier?

EDIT: I'm not saying this because I'm supporting Dean either. I'd be asking this even if Bush had done it.

You know, I can handle you supporting Dean if you keep up with the primo Kylie Minogue shots. Splendid.

Anywhoo, when you have an image of being somewhat unstable to begin with, doing ANYTHING that might "prove" that image to be "correct" is a really bad idea.

I just see it as being really enthusiastic and not exactly passionate, but at least believing strongly in what he's got to say.

As I said elsewhere, this is his "potatoe" moment. Quayle was written off, irreversibly, as a total idiot after that. Dean is a raving psycho after this.

...The Dems REAL problem is that the GOP has, no doubt, been keeping up with their flip-flop-mania over the past few years and can UNDRESS them on that alone

Look at it from the Democratic perspective for the last two years and three months. You're supposed to be offering some kind of opposition to the other party, which happens to be in charge and is entrusted by the American people to defend the nation against more ghastly events, so you end up looking like you oppose protecting the country and all the good things that the current administration is trying to do. This makes you backtrack on your original opposition until you think you might be able to offer some kind of resistance without looking like total heels again, but that fails and you're forced to go back ONCE MORE.

It'd be the same deal if Gore had won in 2000, the Republicans would be forced to advance and retreat in the same manner.
