Rap: Why does it get such a bad "rap " around here

Recommended Posts

I cruise the music board from time to time, and it seems to me that rap and hip hop get such a bad rap. I see comments like "rap isn't music, it doesn't take any skill to be a rapper" and I wonder why in the hell people say stupid shit like that. If someone said rock wasn't music, there would be an uproar but no one ever says shit when the same is said about rap

Mostly because TSM is filled with metal heads, many(not all) of which tend to be close minded.

Also, because alot of the people saying it see the shit on MTV and figures it represents everything rap. In this case I will agree with them, because much of the stuff MTV shows is awful.

Actually, someone generally does say shit when that happens. I usually will if I see it and no one else has said anything. There's just a smaller number of fans, so it may take longer. Look in the rap vs hip hop thread, that's pretty much all of them. And Banky, but he isn't in here as much.

The anti rap sentiments you usually see around here are ridiculous and more than a decade out of date, so it isn't worth nearly as much effort to counter a statement which no one who isn't socially and culturally retarded would believe. And I mean retarded in the most clinical sense, so don't take offense.

I can't actually think of any metalhead at TSM, besides Mario, that is closed minded musically. Sure, Agent prefers the grindcore and Thumbtack the black metal and baron the power metal and me the thrash, but we also dig classic rock, classical, and lots of "artsy," "indie" stuff. Good tunes is good tunes, I say.

Rap gets a bad "rap" because of MTV. That's why. The truly good rappers aren't "pushed" (yes, I'm going to use wrestling terms) in the mainstream because their topics are either taboo or too heavy, and the ones with the push are the kind that the least common denominator (read: suburban white girls) will like. Just like how you see the worst rock bands on MTV and hear the worst rock bands on the radio, there are plenty of amazing rock bands that never get MTV or radio exposure.

I just detest mainstream hip hop which is confused by the media as rap music. I like rap. It was a big part of my listening collection as a youth, however I just don't like today's version.

I'm not a metalhead (far from it) but I really dislike rap. I think it does take some form of talent to be a rapper, but I just find too often that it really doesn't do much for me.

There's so much similarity in all the songs to the point where I can't distinguish between artists/songs. The lyrics are usually either garbage about bitches or whatever or pretentious trite about living in da hood. I really find it rather pathetic.

Early rap I could stand. MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Kriss Kross all didn't take themselves so seriously and it was fun. Now it has lost that and I think until someone can find something new to diversify rap to the average person (which I think will be difficult) it is going to be near impossible for me to get into.

Well if 5 artist use the same name for a song but use different lyrics then you can see that very few hip-hop artist are orginal. Just go search any P2P site and look for "Whoa" or "Whats My Name".

Ja Rule is the devil.

When I buy a music CD, I want some, you know, MUSIC on it.

I don't want a monotone generic beat made with synthesizing machines.

I don't want some guy talking into a microphone. I want something that resembles singing.

I don't want these words being called poetry because they happen to share a last phoneme together, despite usually being about riff raff topics and not making any sense.

Group me into the people that just isn't feeling rap.

I wouldn't say it has a bad rep here, its just there are not enough people, and rap is hardly discuss.

It's true, but often when it is discussed the people who dislike it are usually the loudest and out number the people who like it.

Metal is just generic and Offensive as Rap is,

Metal , is primarily just loud angst driven yelling...How people can call that an ARTFORM and deny The Ability of flow and Rhyme...

Sadly, Many people are misguided here and believe Nelly, Ja Rule is representive of the Rap Art.

Maybe because it takes some basic knowledge of how to write a song (harmony, melody, time signatures, tempo, etc.) more than it takes to say a few stanzas of a "poem" that happens to rhyme to rhythm. Pick up a guitar. Try to play "Hallowed Be Thy Name" by Iron Maiden. You can use guitar tablature and sheet music if you'd like. Now, pick up a microphone. Try to rap "California Love" by Dr. Dre and 2Pac. You can use transcriptions of the lyrics.

See how much easier it is to perform a rap than it is to actually PLAY the music? Now, I'm not trying to insult rap, but overall, it's about 1/4 as difficult as it is to play rock music (and its branches).

Yes, I know it takes a certain amount of ability to be able to rhyme good (which is a WRITING attribute, not a musical one) and make the words flow (which is a SPEAKING attribute, not a musical one). Hell, I respect anybody that can freestyle above the generic "I'm great, you suck" stuff immensely, because I can't. But I also think that anybody that can't do the intro to "Raining Blood" should respect people such as myself immensely for being able to not only play it nearly flawlessly, but also faster than it should be played.

I think that goes with metal also. A lot of the metal I have heard, all sounds the same to me. The only metal I like, if these bands even fit with metal catagory, are old school Korn and Slipknot.

The only rap artists I like are Eminem, Outkast, and Nas. Other than that, they don't do much for me.

Then again, my favorite bands are Phish, Eagles, Strangefolk and Grateful Dead, so I like a completly different type of music.

I don't really even think current mainstream rap is that bad. Artists like Outkast, Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Jay Z, The Neptunes, and Sean Paul are all doing creative things, and producing a lot of good music. Right now is a pretty damn good time for mainstream music, excluding rock.

Outkast and Sean Paul I dig. There's something about Sean Paul's accent I find compelling in his music, and whenever my girlfriend has it on a rap station and a song from him comes on (she hates him), I tell her to leave it. But Missy Elliot and Jay Z? No. Uh-uh. Sorry. Nada.

Mole, I don't hate you, and I also don't feel like having another Metal Crusade like I used to have to do constantly at WrestlingTalks and Mcrook and Wrestling-Titans, so I'll say this once: KoRn and Slipknot and Linkin Park and almost any other band you'll hear Rolling Stone call "metal" are NOT metal. The obvious exceptions to this rule are the big ACTUAL metal acts, such as Slayer and Iron Maiden and Black Label Society.

Take 2 Turntables, a stack of records, and freestyle on a mic in a battle. Try to be as good as Jam Master Jay or even Kid Rock B-)

That would be Busta Rhymes, he's everywhere.

No, not just one guy, I mean it's one big circle of "You rap on my CD and I'll rap on yours"

When I used to work at Best Buy and I saw some of the big name rappers releasing CDs, I'd look on the back at the tracklist and I swear half the tracks would have after that "(Guest starring <random rapper>)"

Whats wrong with that? I know everybody does that now since nearly everybody is in some kind of kliq. I think that was the main reason why No Limit and Cash Money sold so many CDs.

I just want to say that saying rap/hip-hop shown on MTV sucks is too much of a blanket statement. Most of it sucks, yes, but Outkast, for example, is truly great and they get played all the time.
