Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2004 Am I the only guy here who doesn't see some of these original posts that are being quoted? Netscape seems to be acting funky with the upgrade. I use Netscape at home, and every now & then posts will be missing when I get into some threads.
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted January 30, 2004 Why is Iceland called Iceland when they have no ice and Greenland is called Greenland when its covered in ice and snow? http://www.askjeeves.com http://web.ask.com/web?q=Why+is+Iceland+ca...&askbutton.y=14 If I wanted an answer from Jeeves I would have gone to that site, I want your answer When I was a lad, I enjoyed watching Beakman's World, an edutainment science show featuring an eccentric man in a wig, a cute, spunky sidekick and a disgusting man in a rat costume. For me, it was the only reason to get up early on Saturday mornings; cartoons meant little to me, but Beakman...that's where my heart belonged. Beakman's World had a segment in each show where he, Beakman, would answer questions from the viewers. One day, I was moved to send my own question to Beakman--why does my reflection in the bowl of a spoon appear upside down?--but Beakman never answered it. Instead, I was sent a postcard thanking me for asking the question, but Beakman didn't have the time to answer every question he received, and that sometimes it is most rewarding to look up the answer yourself. I got that same postcard with the cartoon Beakman who had a head like 3 times the size of his cartoon body. He failed me too.

I just made a sixtuplet (or is it sextuplet, I can't remember) post in Current Events. I just left it alone and then I had six posts of what I was saying. What I'm asking you is, how'd it happen? Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2004 What am I missing with Outkast? Why are they so loved by all? As a fan of Outkast for some years, I'm largely at a loss as to why they've now become the new Beastie Boys (being the rap act for people who don't like rap*). Yes, their current sound has more crossover appeal--compared to the relatively straightforward sounds of ATLiens and Aquemini (the latter being my favorite album of the 90s, by the way)--but I don't know why they've crossed over in this huge a fashion. *Not to say that Outkast sound anything like the Beastie Boys. Also, Outkast are way more popular than the Beasties ever were.

Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted January 31, 2004 *Not to say that Outkast sound anything like the Beastie Boys. Also, Outkast are way more popular than the Beasties ever were. The Beasties had such a cross-over impact because they don't stick with one genre. You say that the Beasties have a lot of non hip-hop fans? Well its because 50% of their songs aren't hip hop. Going back to Check Your Head they've been doing a lot more instrumentals and hardcore songs. THATS why they cross-over so many genres. And Outkast is way more popular than the Beasties? Bah, thats nonsense. Again, I look at their crossover appeal. Both people in the hip-hop, rock, and "punk" scene dig the Beastie Boys because they play music that caters to them. No "punkers" were buying Stankonia. No rock fans were buying ATliens. The newest double LP was being bought by everyone and their mom, I'll give it that, shit...just that might make them as popular or a little more popular than the Beasties...but way more popular? Thats nonsense. In fact, if you polled the people right now which song is/was more popular, they'd say Sabotage over Hey Ya. I think everyone is doubting the Beasties power since they've taken a good 6 year hiatus from making an original music. The one track they released this year was horrible, but I am assuming that they'll still come back and be just as hot as this Outkast group everyone is talking about. I'd say Sabotage was more of an underground hit that appealed to all people who listened to "alternative" music, whereas Hey Ya was more mainstream, and appealled to pop kids and parents as well as alternative kids. Or at least that's the way it is here in the UK.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Report post Posted January 31, 2004 Well more mothers know Hey Ya. But every young kid who listened to music was listening to Sabotage in 94. EVERY KID. I guess I'm not young enough to see what the impact Hey Ya has on my peers...none of my friends now really listen to it. And just on a side note The Sabotage video was much greater than the Outkast one.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2004 According to the evil RIAA, Outkasts' first album went platinum, Aquemini and ATLiens went double platinum, Stankonia went triple, and the latest one is currently at 7 million. Beastie Boys' first album is currently at 9 million, Paul's Boutique and Ill Communication are at triple, each, and Hello Nasty is at just platinum. (You can find all this information here. Just click on the "gold & platinum" link on the main page, and peruse the searchable database.) Looking at the numbers, the Beasties' popularity seems to have decreased over time, while Outkast's has only grown. Anyway, the only reason I compared the two was because they've both been deemed okay by non-rap fans. EDIT: Furthermore, I'd really rather not argue over which is better. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2004 The Sabotage video was much greater than the Outkast one. Dude's got talent, but he doesn't know when to quit. The way he turns practically every fucking track into a quasi-freestyle thing is gratingly self-indulgent. He managed to reign it in during his two appearences on So...How's Your Girl?, so I can enjoy him, but only in moderation.
