America is "retarded" because we don't like soccer?

 

Why?

 

We have different tastes. I don't call the rest of the world retarded for not loving football. That's their tastes.

 

Soccer does not work here. It is tedious to watch and even more tedious to play. An abomination of a sport.

I wouldn't call the match I watched tonight(Manchester City coming back from a 3 goal deficet with a player sent off to win 4-3) tedious and boring. But then again, different strokes for different folks.

Any team sport is homoerotic due to the shower.

 

I like sports where people hurting each other is the purpose, like boxing, and a slight (but increasing) interest in MMA.

 

Always been a bigger fan of individual sports, too. Jumping REALLY far with a running start, and throwing objects a long distance impresses me, as does lifting insanely heavy objects, or propelling oneself down an icy tube at breakneck speed.

 

I couldn't name too many track and field athletes, but those are sports where the achievements matter more than the athlete, I think.

 

As for other sports, I'm marginally interested in baseball, as I like the Cubs and Yankees, and no one else. NCAA basketball can tug my sack, as they don't have a fraction of the skill of the pissy arrogant pros. I feel the same way about football, and mainly love the NFL because I grew up with it, I think. It's not hard to see why people think it's boring, though.

 

I have a morbid fascination with curling, and scottish traditional sports involving logs and stones.

Oh, I don't have the FOGGIEST idea about any aspect of the game, but watching those canucks zip right along, sweeping the ice with brooms, is mesmerizing. It's kind of like shuffleboard, to my understanding.

That was an amazing game, the FA Cup is the best club knockout competition in the world by a mile.

eh, the DFB cup here in Germany is up there as well. Bremen had an awesome game against a team from the second division (Furth) two days ago. It was 1-1 until Furth scored in minute 81. Shortly after a Bremen player gets sent off with red for a harsh tackle. Bremen proceeded to score two goals in injury time to win the game. Great stuff.

Bremen is on top right now, yes. My Bayern Munich is playing awful right now and Dortmund has big money problems and can be lucky if they get to be in the UEFA cup next year. So Bremen's chances are very good this year, they have a great squad. But most of their important players will not be there anymore after this season.

Maybe you know their central midfielder Johan Micoud, he's a French international but mostly has to play second fiddle to Zidane there. He's awesome. And their forward Ailton has already scored 18 goals in 18 games this season and would be playing for Brazil if they didn't have their heads up their asses.

 

Yes, the FA cup is still a bit more awesome because of its big tradition and I really love the atmosphere in English arenas.

I can't fathom how proper football is more tedious to play than something like American Football (a 60 minute game shouldn't last longer than a wrestling PPV IMO) or Baseball. There's absolutely no flow to those games whatsoever but I wouldn't call either of them an abomination of a sport because hey, we all have our own tastes right? I've never followed Baseketball or Ice Hockey but I can at least see the appeal based on the fast end to end nature of them.

I didn't know Micoud was playing for them, he's a skilful player. I heard Dortmund have terrible injury problems as well as financial struggles. One thing I notice about Germany is how good the attendances are every week. I'm sure Bayern will come good again sooner rather than later, at least you don't support Leicester City like me. In fact, Bayern is still 100 times better than most teams other posters here support, checkout the div 1 football thread for proof.

Yeah, the attendances are crazy sometimes. Dortmund are 9th right now and still draw 83 000 fans every week. I don't support Bayern just because they are successful btw, I live only an hour drive away from Munich so it was a natural thing to support them. But I also root for my hometown squad SSV Jahn Regensburg, who just advanced to the second division this year for the first time since about 30 years ago. Bayern plays against Real Madrid in the CL next round, hopefully they get their act together.

I'm probably one of the very few Americans who enjoys world football (i.e. soccer), especially watching with foreign friends who help me get into it much more

 

For example, the other day at work when they had on a Man-U game (against SouthHampton, dunno when it actually happened, but it was aired on Tues afternoon), I watched it with some of my Indian co-workers, and we were all into it, especially when the crowd shouts/sings in full unison... something you don't hear in US sports (at least, not without the word "sucks" in it)

Per End, only one team can score. Only this stones can be counted that are in the house. (or touch the edge of the house) A team receives a point for every stone that is nearer the center than any other stone from the opponent team (refer to images below). The two Skips decide this only with the help of their eyes. If they can not distinguish which stone is closer, they can use a measuring device. If also the measuring device does not bring a decide nobody receives a point.

Football's more of a cerebral game, though. You've got two teams of mastermind coaches trying to outwit each other, and the players have to be able to execute the plays. It's balanced like that, which is why I love it. Soccer and Rugby always struck me as being more chaotic and physical, with lots of running and kicking.

 

Boxing will forever be my favorite sport though. Two guys, proving who's better with the simplest means available. It takes a great mind, as well as ultimate conditioning, strength, speed, balance, and rhythm to be really good.

I've always had a soft spot for Liverpool but they have fallen depressingly far behind Arsenal and Man Utd. Alongside Man Utd, they still have a massive worldwide fanbase compared to anybody else due to their illustrious history. Arsenal aren't really a big side anywhere outside of London. Leicester are currently a premiership club but probably wont be at the end of the season, they have always been up and down between the top two divisions. Gordon Banks, Peter Shilton and Gary Lineker are our most famous ex-players. As for the champions League you have to favour Real Madrid but you can bet absolutely nobody will write off Bayern as having no chance. I don't think Man Utd are up to winning it this season unless their defence improves and they get some massive performances from Keane, Scholes, Giggs and Van Nistelrooy.

Soccer (I hate to call it that, but this is a Mostly American board), can be just as cerebral as you put it.

 

Example, Leicester City played Middlesborough in the League Cup Final a few years back, I think it was 1997. Middlesborough's side was full of highly paid and just as highly talented international stars. Leicester however was mostly a team made off hardworking journeyman. However Leicester had one ace in their pack, Sweden's national captain, Pontus Kaamark. Leicester's coach, Martin O'Neill told Kaamark to track Middlesborough's best player, Juninho, up and down the pitch without mercy and basically suffocate him out of the game. Kaamark managed to keep Juninho quiet two games running and with Middlesborough's best player effectively cancelled out, Leicester scraped home the cup in perhaps their greatest moment.

Basketball because the pace of the game is slow and there's too much scoring. I tried to watch the last few minutes and the overtime of a Lakers v Cavs game earlier this week; I wanted to scream at the TV it was so boring. Thank god a hockey game was coming on soon.

I think Freddy Adu should be compared to Pele, since you know he is black and is suppose to be the savoir of soccer in USA. I don't think Freddy is a real american since he was not born here, is'nt he from Cameroon or something?

If he's from Cameroon, I'll be very relieved. Considering that Maradona basically had cameras following his every trick from since he was 10, I'd say Adu is more like him. Pele kinda just showed up and stunned and scared the fuck out of everyone. The black thing isn't an issue.

 

But to be fair comparing Adu to either Maradona or Pele is just begging for him to fail. Those kind of comparisons can kill a career before it even gets started.
