WWF Print Ads

Recommended Posts

For those of you who frequent my website, just wanted to let you know that I've re-posted the 150 or so print ads I have into fuller size images (and added a few more). They start in 1964 and continue to November 2003. Yes, now you can actually read where the show was held.

If you come across any others, feel free to drop me an e-mail.

Here's the direct link:

The other day, I found a full page ad from the USA today hyping the first ever Smackdown! from April '99..might you have any interest in that, or are you only looking for live event ones?

You know what ... I think I might be interested. So far I've only posted live event ads but I have received a number of Saturday Night's Main Event and The Main Event ads (I think from TV Guide). I'll probably add them all soon enough.

On the Japanese one, was that Tenryu on the opposite side of Yoko???

Yep, he worked several of the WWF's May 94 Japan tour dates.

What I'm not sure about is the Japanese wrestler featured in the ad from 1980 that also includes Backlund, Inoki, and Hansen. I'm a bit Japanese illiterate so if it's obvious and I'm just not getting it, forgive me.

Guest Markingout

After the last one in 92 all the ads became red Xs. I refreshed and the same thing happened.

Who do you know in Flint, MI? (I see a lot of ads from the Capital Centre)

I also see a couple of events I went to long ago (in Wichita)

The Capital Centre was in Landover, MD ("Capital" since it was so close to DC; later renamed the USAir Arena and torn down a few years back). I'm from the area so everytime I go home, I'll find a few more via old issues of the Washington Post.

D'oh... there's a Capital Centre in Flint, MI and that was the first one I thought of (since I'm originally from Ohio/Michigan)

Looking back at the ads for Wichita from the early 90's, there was a time when they came here every six months or so... now we're lucky if they come here every two years or so (last time was an SD house show in August)

Whaaaaa? Hogan vs Warrior with Mike Tyson as ref? Did this actually happen?

It was suppose to happen but then James "Buster" Douglas beat Mike Tyson and therefore that never happenend if I have my story straight which I believe I do on this one.

Thanks.

Savage, not Warrior.

WWF @ Detroit, MI - Joe Louis Arena - February 23, 1990

The Main Event III - shown live on NBC:

WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan pinned Randy Savage at 11:14 when guest outside referee Buster Douglas (sub. for Mike Tyson) made the fast count following the legdrop; during the match, Douglas sent Sensational Sherri, who was in the challenger's corner, backstage; after the match, Douglas knocked Savage out with a punch

Yeah that is exactly what I heard had happenend but that makes no sense if they where going to use Tyson why not just have him be the referee at WWF WrestleMania VI in the Title Vs. Title Main Event between Hulk Hogan Vs. Ultimate Warrior it just makes no sense that they would waste him on the other match but that is what would have happenend.

Thanks.

Actually, there was talk at the time of Savage being a transitional champion for Warrior - since the WWF was so lukewarm to face vs. face matches (talk from fans, mags, etc). Involving Tyson - or Douglas for that matter - bumped up the anticipation for the free TV Hogan vs. Savage title bout (a match that had happened nearly every day of the previous year).

Also, involving a boxer as the guest referee means he would have to knock someone out ... couldn't do that with Hogan vs. Warrior.

Yeah I heard that it was going to be Savage Vs. Warrior at WWF WrestleMania VI which would have been interesting to see Hogan not in the main event. Yeah you are right he could not have knocked out either Hogan or Warrior so it somewhat makes sense. I heard that Savage Vs. Hogan match from WWF Saturday Night's Main Event was really bad. Let me add that Cawthon777's site kicks major ass!!!

Thanks.
