The Simpsons Coming To A Theatre Near You...

DVD Fanatic got a chance to talk to The Simpsons producer and writer Mike Reiss, who chatted about the next "Simpsons" DVD and says that The Simpsons movie is definitely in the works. Here's two clips from the interview.

Tom: What can you tell us about the movie? We've heard that there was supposed to be a "Simpsons" movie for the past several years but you don't want to just simply put three episodes together, so how are you creating something new that's not been done before?

Mike: That's been the biggest challenge. They've wanted to do this since season two. It's been 13 years of wanting to do "The Simpsons" Movie. Finally FOX said, "Let's just do it!" We never had the greatest idea that was compelling but FOX said, "Maybe if we start paying you, you'll get inspired." And sure enough it worked! We've got a very good and interesting idea and it's different from the show. You know, it's like the "South Park" movie where it's just a bigger, longer, amplified version of the show. I can't tell you anything specific about it. My wife doesn't even know the secret.

Tom: When do you think "The Simpsons" movie will come out?

Mike: I will say two years from this summer. I think it's going to be Summer 2006 or maybe Christmas 2006. It's a reality after being just sort of this phantom idea. I think it is really gonna happen.

The Simpsons Coming To A Theatre Near You At An Indeterminable Date We're Guessing Going By The Same Interview These People Have Been Giving For The Past Five Years...

I'd be thrilled if The Simpsons was still good. I'm more excited about the Family Guy DTV project.

Simpsons jumped the shark when Phil Hartman died. Its sad but true, I mean Troy McLure and Lionel Hutz were extremely key characters in the world of supporting characters. That Gil character and Judge Judy rip-off they replaced them with suck. Also their approach of getting random celebrities to play themselves has gotten old. I'm sick of episodes with no real plot given just so certain character can say "Hey look! Its (insert random celebrity)!"

The main characters have all changed too.

Homer started off as a heavy drinking father employed by the power plant who had anger issues and wasn't that bright. Now He's Captain Brain Dead of the Planet Whacky Adventure.

Bart is no longer a rebel

Lisa turned into contradict everything girl

Marge went from housewife looking after her family's well being into actually AGREEING with most of Homer's craptacular escapades.

This show needs a mercy killing and I don't even want to see 5min of the film. I'll just keep buying the DVDs up to Season 9, because after that is when things started to go downhill.

I love Gil, but I guess I'm the only one.

I still love The Simpsons, I still laugh at it, I still watch it, and if it were up to me it would keep going on forever! :)

I stopped watching the show on TV but I'm buying the DVDs, so I guess that's where I'll get caught up with everything. FOX is taking their sweet time with these box sets though (and I really don't see why), so it will take forever for them to get caught up

I still really like and watch the Simpsons, however when it comes to brand new episodes, I don't really clear my schedule to make sure I watch them a anymore, plus the syndication of them around here tends to rerun the previous seasons episodes right after the current season ends, so they usually get re-aired pretty fast.

South Park Did It! :P

Phil Hartman was a great loss but the cast of Frazier can make up for it. Just make the movie about Sideshow Bob trying to kill Bart.

I'm torn about the movie.

I loved the show, but I haven't seen a new episode since October after the terrible Treehouse of Horrors.

I'll wait to see what the plot is. If it's nothing more than a newer episode only longer, I'll pass. If it's Sideshow Bob and Cecil breaking out of prison to get revenge on Bart, I'll see it.

If it's good, it could rekindle the faith of some hardcore fans. But if it's just Stupid Homer for 100 minutes, you bet the franchise will go down the tubes pretty quick.

And as for the show, Gil is funny, but Judge Judy is just boring. And you can tell that when they joke about running out of ideas, they mean it. How often has Homer gotten a new job?

Lisa turned into contradict everything girl

Actually, interpreted it that they turned her into "shameless outlet for the writers' ideals who somehow gets tons of shows centered around her even though nobody gives a crap about her and her stupid causes."

The movie will suck, I'll bet.

After watching Family Guy on DVD, I believe FG is a way better show because of it's humor and presentation. I know if it had been as long as the Simpsons then I would get tired of it. The show needs to end unless you want to let the kids grow up and let Maggie speak. This show has been on for 14-15 years which longer than a lot of shows. Give it a rest.

This movie will suck beyond all realms of suckitude. Why? Cause it'll be NOTHING but god damn celebrities. In fact, here's the script........

Homer - "Oh my god its Beyonce!"

Bart - "What brings you to Springfield?"

And so on and so on for about 80 minutes

First, I'll believe the Simpsons movie is actually coming out when I actually see the movie. I've been reading about how it's a work in progress for YEARS now, and we're no closer to it becoming a reality.

Second, the "Simpsons now sucks" conversation happens so regularly on TSM, you could set your watch to it. There are people here that don't like the show anymore, and people here that still dig it, and everytime a thread pops up about the show, the same people chirp in with their opinion (me included). In my opinion, the Simpsons is still good at it's worst, and very good at it's best. Better than Family Guy (which also has/had it's shit episodes) and definitely better than Futurama.

A great big huge "MEH!" to this piece of news... I can't even find an good reason to watch the Simpsons nowadays on FREE Television, let alone find a reason for paying to watch 1.5 hours of it... IE: a movie will no better than the crap they've been pumping out for the last few years.

I seriously thought that me and a couple of friends of mine thought like this.

The Simpsons went down the tubes when the bullseye social commentary themes that underlined the episodes disappeared to ring in the current Simpsons, which is just one big whackyland who's episodes have no point. Also, the show doesn't even TRY to be somewhat reflective of the real world--when was the last time we saw Homer at work or Bart and Lisa at school?

But I also have a problem with Family Guy for being derivative to the core. It's the Simpsons with Maggie and Santa's Little Helper talking. They've even stolen some plots (both families end up at Indian casinos, and the matriarchs become addicted to gambling. However, the Simpsons stole the "Grim Reaper visits and is incapacitated, so no one dies until the patriarch takes his job" from Family Guy). But my biggest gripe with Family Guy is that sometimes they think reference alone is funny. Or they'll think that a pop culture reference from the past 20 years, mixed with profanity, somehow qualifies as parody.

Family Guy doesn't touch Simpsons at its peak. But its peak was about seven years ago, and since 2000 it's just been sliding in quality. I seriously can't fathom watching a Simpsons movie in 2006 when I barely even watch the show any more due to the fact that it just isn't funny anymore.

If only this were happening 10 years ago...

Exactly.

Around 1998-ish they actually had a script completed where the main plot was Bart being seduced by a new neighbor in the same vein as "The Graduate". The seller of course was to be Bart having sex for the first time.

That got canned for whatever reason. I think that happened around the same time the writers were holding out for more money, so that could have been a factor.

A movie about a ten-year-old boy having sex got canned, and you need to WONDER about the reason?

Also,I'll point out that if nothing else, Simpsons NEEDS to stop stealing their OWN jokes. I've seen more then one example recently of them using a bit that's almost word-for-word out of one of the old episodes.

The social commentary can be overbearing and annoying too.

However, when the closest thing to biting social commentary they've done in a long time is "DVD will become obsolete sometime!" then you've got problems. ;)

Oh, I like Family Guy, but it reminds me of the Treehouse of Horror ep where Peter was in the crowd of Homer clones.

The creators have been saying no movie until the show ends for awhile now.

I still like the show, so I'm still looking forward to it. If they do it after the end of the series, I'd like to see the movie show the kids as teens and adults.
