dubq Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 True enough. *halfway through Season 5, Smallville* "We regret to inform the cast, crew and fans of the Smallville series this will be it's final year on the WB. While it has proven it's case in terms of ratings, merchandise, fanbase and longevity, we here at the WB feel there is a need to make room for reruns of other shows and more RealityTV. That.. and we really want to fuck you loyal fans up the ass. Sincerely, Joseph Levin, CEO, The WB" How would they manage to stretch high school to 5 years though? Get rid of some of the females and replace them with a chick in leather named Tori? I guess the thing is that because of what we know about Clark Kent, Smallville has a built-in limitation of how long it can go. They can go past high school easily. I mean, they can still live in Smallville after they graduate, right? Plus, it's already pretty broken away from the normal Superman timeline, so living Metropolis isn't as much of a necessity - though it would be good as far as character development goes.
Guest EQ Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 How would they manage to stretch high school to 5 years though? Get rid of some of the females and replace them with a chick in leather named Tori? I guess the thing is that because of what we know about Clark Kent, Smallville has a built-in limitation of how long it can go. Yeah, which is why it would be cool to see the series evolve into something like Lois & Clark. Although, they could pull it off seeing as how Metropolis is rediculously close to Smallville on the show. Lana and Pete could stay in the area, Chloe and Clark could go off to Metropolis, and they could still interact. Have Chloe's character replace Lois Lane for the purposes of the show. All this is possible, but unlikely. Personally, if Smallville went 5 or 6 seasons and then had a strong series finale, I'd be happy.
BlackFlagg Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Ditto. I'm already pretty annoyed at how long it's taking them to release the Season 2 DVD's... Smallville season 2 .May 25, 2004. Youth N Asia Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Season 2 of Smallville was much better then the first. Look forward to picking that up on DVD
dubq Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 May 25th Damn! In direct competition with Buffy Season 6!
The Ghost of bps21 Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Again, I don't think WB would cancel Smallville after five years for two reasons: 1. It's one of the highest rated shows on the station (although...that didn't save Buffy) 2. Warner Bros. owns both the network and the Superman character.
Mole Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Yeah, I can see the point you guys are making. Being vampires gave Angelus/Spike the reason and means to be bad asses, but Lex is just nasty on his own. Then Faith was one mean motherfucker.
Guest Vitamin EC Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 I actually read this comparative piece between Buffy and Smallville and when they were comparing characters, Faith was put against Lex. Heh, I just found it, heres the comparisons... Faith: Friend with a dark side who befriends the heroine despite the mistrust of others; later became heroine's arch-nemesis. Shows evil side by stealing and killing Lex: Friend with a dark side who befriends the hero despite the mistrust of others; will one day be hero's arch-nemesis. Shows evil side by talking on cell phone and speeding in expensive car
starvenger Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Again, I don't think WB would cancel Smallville after five years for two reasons: 1. It's one of the highest rated shows on the station (although...that didn't save Buffy) 2. Warner Bros. owns both the network and the Superman character. Actually, you could add a third (and probably most important) reason: Syndication. Isn't the magic number for a drama around 100? Anyways, they can always go the 90210 route with Smallville: The Summer to hit that. They can go past high school easily. I mean, they can still live in Smallville after they graduate, right? Plus, it's already pretty broken away from the normal Superman timeline, so living Metropolis isn't as much of a necessity - though it would be good as far as character development goes. Even so, diverting too much from the timeline will make people go, "That's not really Superman." Yeah, which is why it would be cool to see the series evolve into something like Lois & Clark. Although, they could pull it off seeing as how Metropolis is rediculously close to Smallville on the show. Lana and Pete could stay in the area, Chloe and Clark could go off to Metropolis, and they could still interact. Have Chloe's character replace Lois Lane for the purposes of the show. Don't watch enough of Smallville to know that. I just assumed that it was similar to the DCU, where Smallville is in Kansas and Metropolis is Delewareish. Also, it is with the best intentions that they send characters off to college, but often I don't find that it works as well for some reason.
Mole Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Or they could do what That 70's Show did. Just because a season ends doesn't mean the school year is over.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 I'm getting into Smallville now. But as a Buffy fan...I can't get out of my head how bad this show wants to be Buffy. They may as well call the show "sunnydale" with all the monster of the week episodes that run through the first season (at least). Instead of the hellmouth...they have Kryptonite. But both do feature teenagers with incredible power who have to keep their secret from everyone. They both have two nerdy friends too. Oh well...if you're going to mimic a show...it's best it be one of my favorites. Dude, that's ridiculously stupid. OMG SUPERMAN IS JUST A COPY OF ANGEL~! WHEDON R0XXXORS! No you moron, he said Smallville, not Superman, copies BTVS formula. I was being funny, but that sort of thing goes over YOUR head, doesn't it Mole? The forumla Buffy utilized is different from SmallVille's. There's no rela "big bad" and the "pretty people with superhuman problems" is older than Buffy. Far older.
RavishingRickRudo Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Was it an episode of Smallville where a cheerleader from the past kept draining the life out of students so she could maintain her youth?
Guest Ghettoman Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 I was wondering why it was cancelled when I found this: http://home.insightbb.com/~wahoskem/angel5.html
El Psycho Diablo Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Not everything Joss touches turns to gold. Firefly is THE example of that. >_> http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0923736/ Joss Whedon Alien: Resurrection (1997) (written by) ... aka Alien 4 (1997
RavishingRickRudo Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 He was also involved in Titan A.E. But to be fair, his work was severely undermined... or so he says. I believe him, cause the stuff he wrote on Buffy and Firefly was brilliant.
dubq Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 I was wondering why it was cancelled when I found this: http://home.insightbb.com/~wahoskem/angel5.html I still don't understand how Neilsen ratings can judge anything considering only a fraction of the homes in America have the Neilsen box...
Guest EQ Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Well, I guess it gives them a decent distrubution. If I remember anything about statistics, if you take a random sampling of a set of numbers, the distruibution of the subset will pretty much reflet the distribution of the whole. (but don't quote me on that)
2GOLD Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Been nice if the WB had promoted the show every once and a while. ANGEL might be the only show where the promotion for the show was scheduled to run DURING the show. Coming out of the repeats, I didn't even know when the new episode was cause the WB didn't say a damn thing. It just kind of went "HI! BACK!" It's also not good but I do applaud the WB for even AIRING Buffy and ANGEL cause no network would have given the two shows the time of day.
Guest EQ Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Well, wasn't the WB still a young station when Buffy first started? The network isn't that old, cause I remember the launch of it (remember the Wayans Bros sitcom? I liked that show). Anyway, they were probably looking for shows to put on and they figured young adults would watch Buffy.
starvenger Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 He was also involved in Titan A.E. But to be fair, his work was severely undermined... or so he says. I believe him, cause the stuff he wrote on Buffy and Firefly was brilliant. Well, he's listed as the sole credit for the movie, so he was likely the last guy to touch it before it went to the director. So really, it's a three sides to a story deal. But in all honesty, saying Alien Resurrection was one of your bigger failures isn't all that bad. It could be a lot worse...
