Cheex Incarnate 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2004 This topic was probably posted here before...by me.....but I just must say that I love Elmore Leonard. I'm reading Gold Coast right now, and its slowly replacing Tishomingo Blues as my favorite (we'll have to see how it ends). How can anyone on this board not like him? Get Shorty, Be Cool, The Switch, Rum Punch, Valdez is Coming, The Hunted, Out of Sight, Touch, Unknown Man #89....the list goes on! Elmore Leonard is by far the BEST crime novelist working today. Bar none. Anyone read any of his stuff...whaddya think? -Cheex
starvenger 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2004 The thing that's shocking to me is how much of his stuff has been addapted for TV and movies. His crime fiction is perfect for the medium, but still, it's quite a bit. Not all of it good, sadly. I believe that Tishimongo Blues (with Don Cheadle) and Be Cool (with Vinnie Barbarino) are in production right now. My favourite novel is Tishimongo Blues (haven't read Gold Coast yet, but I've got a backlog of books to go through, starting with the nonfiction "Bringing Down The House"). I also really dug "When The Women Come Out To Dance" because the short stories tied into his other novels - it's almost like a book version of the deleted scenes on a DVD. And yes, I'm pissed about "Karen Sisco" getting axed. ABC has a great show, yet they kill it for some "Millionaire" overkill...
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2004 I love his stuff too. Right now I like Rum Punch the best even though I saw the movie first, although I haven't read a lot of his most highly recommended books. It was pretty recently that I got into it. I tried to recommend him to my mom, but she described him as uninteresting and pointless. I guess that's just a female thing. But the one she read was Glitz, which I haven't read myself yet, maybe he was just off for that one.
Vyce 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2004 Any body have any particular recommendations for his books? Cause I read "Maximum Bob" once upon a time and I hated it sufficiently enough to never read anything he wrote ever again.

I'll be the first to admit that I got into Leonard thanks to the movie Get Shorty, so I'd start there, as well as the sequel Be Cool. I'd also go with a couple of his other notable novel-to-movie books, Out Of Sight and Rum Punch (aka Jackie Brown). Also, When The Women Come Out To Dance is probably a good "sampler" to try a bunch of his stuff.
Cheex Incarnate 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2004 The first i read was Tishomingo Blues, and I'd suggest that for a new reader of Leonard. If not that, then definately Gold Coast, which is now ultimately my favorite. Also, he has written many a top notch western (Valdez is Coming being my favorite) that i recomend to anyone. -cheex
