Rear Window - 8/10

Really? I'd have to say this is a lower-echelon Hitchcock for me. The opening camera shot and voyeuristic inserts of the other neighbors suggest much more interesting characters and stories than the one we actually end up getting.

Anyhow, today I watched I, Robot, and I was actually surprised by how good it was. Given its second, more generic action trailer (which counteracted such an excellent teaser), and presence of the ever-annoying Will Smith (who was an executive producer...what, being the lead doesn't ensure enough face time? :P), I wasn't expecting much. Luckily, the final product ended up being more like what I'd hoped from the teaser - an interesting, albeit greatly simplified robot-themed fiction touching on familiar themes (nature of humanity, created against creator, etc.) with a bit of action flare and some exciting fight scenes (of course, there are also a number of more typical, post-Matrix fights as well). Who knew?

Napoleon Dynamite was about a 5/10, in my opinion. It was original and fun, but pointless. Most of the humor was just humor because it came out of nowhere. I doubt it'd be as funny on a second viewing. Still, props for trying something new, I guess. This just isn't as good as most people said it was.

I liked it...but I think it may be one of those movies where I give it a higher rating the first time seeing it but will probably get knocked back a point or so on a second viewing.

Shaun of the Dead 10/10

Next to "The Incredibles" this is the best movie of the year so far. A real hoot, and

actually pumps me up even more for Romero's return to zombieland.

Oliver Stone's Platoon was a brilliant study of war. Before watching this, I had questioned Charlie Sheen and Tom Berenger's respective acting abilities. This movie proved me wrong. Brilliant performances by all, actually, including the smaller roles like Kevin Dillon.

Not as good as Apocalypse Now in the cinematography department, but Platoon totally blows it away with the story and the action. Other than that, they're hard to compare. They basically have the same purpose (to show how war changes a man), but they were approached in completely different manners. I prefer Platoon's gritty portrayal.

The best movie on Vietnam I've ever seen, and possibly one of the best war films I've ever seen. 9/10

R-Point - **1/2

R-Point, a south-korean horror movie from 2004, has an original setting for a horror film: The Vietnam war. Sadly the originality stops there as the characters and 'scary' moments are just too cliché. The ending is underwhelming as well. Plus points were the good performance by the lead Kam Woo-Sung and some really good scenes in-between.

My tutor friend - 5.5/10 just barely climbed up the ladder to be tad above the average. I must recommend My wife is a gangster highly over this hit and miss comedy.

SharkSkin Man and Peach Hip Girl - 7/10. Didnt get better with a second rewatch but was still funny.

Shaun of the dead must be the most 9 out 10 rated movie in the world.

Over the last couple of days I've seen the following:

The Phantom of the Opera - this just about worked as a spectacle, though it was nothing to write home about. The music was also pretty ill-integrated into the film at times.

Ocean's Twelve - very amusing nonsense.

2046 - visually gorgeous, naturally, and with some interesting and very engrossing stuff in it, but it seemed dramatically uneven, and not a patch on In the Mood for Love (though I didn't expect it to be). It did however seem like the kind of film that could really grow on me with repeated viewings, so I'll hold off final judgement for now.

The Punisher - wildly uneven in tone and rather flatly directed, this was pretty underwhelming.

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead - this was anything but uneven in tone. Fantastically grim and brooding, this really reinforced my fandom of director Mike Hodges. Bloody marvellous.

Nothing - ***1/2

Absurd but fun little movie by Vincenzo Natali, the director of Cube. Two losers one day find themselves in the situation that everything but their own house and themselves has disappeared because they can hate away things. Hilarity and strange situations ensue. Some great quotes in this also ('We can't be dead, we have cable!').
