The "What Film(s) Did You Watch Today" Thread

The Village

6.5 out of 10

I really enjoyed the first hour. Untill they got to the first swerve no monsters in the woods. Then it lost me. Then they got to the second swerve. it was an experiment from people who've lost loved ones in current times recreating an older society...at first I wasn't sold on it, but then rewatched the last 15 minutes and warmed up to the idea.

In the past few days:

All the President's Men - 9/10

Very enjoyable, with a great script and rapid-fire pace. Robert Redford was really good.

The Aviator - 9/10

Even better the second time around. The crash sequence and the Senate hearings are so good. Every actor did great here, from Leo to John C. Reilly to Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin (who has one of the best uses of "fuck." I've seen) and Alan Alda, I loved it. The way of the future.

The Godfather Part II - 10/10

Much better than the first. The inclusion of De Niro playing a young Vito was my favorite part, and makes me want to watch the first again. I loved Duvall's character, and "It was you, Fredo" is just...man. Wonderful movie.

Darkness (Uncut Version)-6/10. Better than the theatrical version, though still pretty derivitive of other films. The acting sucks, but there's a great sense of dread and atmosphere. What really hurts the film is the final half, which is borderline incoherent, and stupid. Not as bad as most said, but not really anything special.

Black, you gave TGND WAY too high of a rating.

Over the past few weeks or so:

The Longest Yard - C+

- The movie was alright, with a few funny parts. However, Sandler didn't seem to show up in a few scenes and it is NO WHERE NEAR as good as the original.

The Girl Next Door - C

- TGND is a pretty funny movie, but there is a bunch of cheese in it. I mean a bunch of cheese. Plus, Elisha Cuthbert isn't a very good actress.

Finding Neverland - B+

- A pretty good movie, with a great performance by Depp and Winslet. However, the movie moved a bit slow which got me bored at times. And why didn't Dustin Hoffman even try an English accent?

Assault on Precinct 13 - B-

- A LOT better than I thought it would be. This movie had CRAP written all over it, but it pleasently surprised me. The ending pissed me off though.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - A-

- I raised it from a B+ after the last viewing after I realized how dark it was. Best movie of the 3.

Spiderman 2 - A-

- 2nd best action movie of all time, behind X2. It doesn't get an A because of a few little things I don't like about it. But still a great movie.

X2, the second best action movie of all time? What about Die Hard? The Terminator? Léon? Every film John Woo ever made with the exception of Mission Impossible 2, which actually wasn't that bad!? Alright, Léon is more of a drama, but it's still better as an action film than X2 is. Surely you meant to "superhero movie," but even that's being overly generous!

Sorry about that. Your opinions have as much value as mine. Anyway...

I just watched the first part of To Play The King, the sequel to the awesome BBC miniseries House of Cards. It's as fantastic as I expected, and I can't frigging wait to watch the rest. And then there's another sequel... Ian Richardson is a god, yes indeed.

Blue velvet and Johnny Mnemonic. My friend loved Blue Velvet thank God (sorta a hard movie to recommend,) Johnny Mnemonic fucking sucked, despite having been written by my favorite author. Stick to the prose William Gibson.
