I had never heard of this movie, just randomly picked it up based on the case (not the one shown, can't find it. Must be different for Canadians), and thought the premise sounded intriguing.

Definitely recommended. It reminded me a lot of American History X (bold statement, I know), but replace nazism with school shootings for a topic. Ben Foster does an incredible job as Trevor Adams, playing the part amazingly well. I'm nearing the end of my schooling, and felt as though I could relate to the character, as well as understand the bullshit which occurs within high school, so that may have played a part in how well I received the film.

I don't want to say too much about it, because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, however, I would have it be recommended viewing at high schools across North America, along with Requiem For A Dream, as I'd rather they saw this than shoot up their schools, or become addicted to drugs, when it could have possibly been prevented.

8/10

High Tension: 8/10

I didn't hate the twist, but it would've been a 9 with a more straight forward ending. A great movie for people with a love for brutal and bloody 70's exploitation style horror.

Gotta love any movie that uses this beauty to display bloody delights.

The dubbing was terrible, so hopefully Lions Gate releases the subbed and uncut version on DVD.

* High Tension-9/10-Would be a 10 if it weren't for the ending. Other than that, it's damn near perfect. A definate top 10 of the year for me, and one of the most brutal horror films I've seen on the big screen in a long time. Also, best scene with a severed head since "Re-Animator"

* Note, I saw it on Sunday, but forgot to mention it. Other than that, nothing to note.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith - 9/10. Much better than I expected it to be.

When I read that, this is what immediately went throug my head:

"Why the heck are you watching that when there's a Batman movie on the loose?!"

It was funny in my head.

As for the thread topic:

I watched The Bone Collector tonight on TV. 7/10. Decent.

Dead Meat-7.5/10-Not perfect, but pretty fun Zombie movie from Ireland, with gore, humor, cows that eat people, and other such things.

7/10. A great, inherently charming story, but a poorly crafted film. The director spends too much time on certain things and not enough on others. Plus, the ending's the most abrupt I've ever seen.

Today on Spike...

10/10. One of my favorite movies.

8/10. Beautiful film, but like in Spirited Away, certain explanations are glossed over or simply left out in favor of telling as fantastic a tale as possible. And Billy Crystal did a much better job of voicing Calcifier than I expected.

For a long time I couldn't wait to finally see this film. It's Katsuhiro Otomo's dream project, how can it be any less than amazing, I thought. Then it finally came out (after 10 years, mind you) and the reviews were underwhelming. Due to that I didn't watch it til now.

So, how good or bad is it? The best thing about this film by far is its technology. That includes the breathtaking animation, brilliant set designs, awesome special effects and first and foremost the earth-shattering sound! If any anime film needs to be watched in 5.1 sound it is this one. The film also has a strong message about the dangers of technology and science, which isn't that creative but I still liked it. The many imaginative and creative ways steam is used in this story were fun to watch.

Now, to my problems with the film. It's very unconsistent in its pace. The first half moves along quickly and interesting, but the whole second hour is basically one gigantic action sequence. It looks and sounds great, but one whole hour of non-stop action is just overkill. The characters were mostly uninteresting, with the exception of Ray and Scarlet. You never really know what Ray's dad and grandfather are really up to and what their motivations are. The plot is very straight-forward. That's not necessarily a problem, but I expected a bit more from the creator of Akira.

Overall a good film, worth watching for anime fanatics and casual movie-goers alike. Yes, the plot and characters leave a bit to be desired but the film is just marvellous to look at and sounds fantastic. But don't expect another Akira.
