Appleseed 2004 - ****

incredible CG animation, awesome action scenes, a cool soundtrack and a deep plot by Masamune Shirow that sometimes slows the film down a bit. Great film, hopefully it'll make it to cinemas over here someday. I really wanna see it on the big screen now.

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle - 8/10

Jackass: The Movie - 5/10

Not nearly as funny as I remembered it to be. Most of the skits/stunts didn't hold up very well.

Toy Story - 8/10

Harold and Kumar go to White Castle-8/10 I laughed harder here then I did during "Dodgeball". Then again, I didn't like "Dodgeball"...

The Royal Tenenbaums

I like how my taste in comedy is shifting towards the more subtle, understated variety. I loved how this wasn't a laugh-out-loud, in your face comedy. It wasn't even much of a comedy at all, in some points. After all, attempted suicide, kinda-sorta incest, and an overall depressing mood don't make a traditional comedy.

Still, great performances by all, especially Gene Hackman, Luke Wilson (surprised me), Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller (surprisingly subdued), and an underused Bill Murray.

8.5/10

saw this two days ago.

this has nothing to do with anything, but while i was walking home from my favorite diner this afternoon, on a street i've walked down approximately 3,250 times before, i passed by quentin tarantino. i did a double take, and kept walking. immediately after our encounter, it started snowing. truly a magic moment.

I echo Superstar's sentiments.

Anyway, yesterday I rented the following:

Dark Eyes - I'm not quite sure how I feel about this, as there are some really good->great scenes in the film, and Mastroianni is really good in it, but for a film that deals with stuff that should be very painful (adultery, loss and so forth) it never seems willing to confront the issues anymore than in passing. I much preferred the director's later Burnt by the Sun.

Our Lady of the Assassins - this was pretty depressing stuff, though intentionally so. Whereas the previously mentioned film seemed hesitant to truly deal with the pain lying beneath the images, this plunges into it head on. There are flaws to the film, it's a bit too melodramatic at times for me, and there's some stuff about the main character that bothered me, but overall it's powerful stuff.

That Obscure Object of Desire - I'd already seen this previously, but why would you object to rewatching a Buñuel movie? This is no different from the other Buñuel films I've seen, it's totally and utterly awesome and I can't wait till I get to watch it again (I should look into buying the DVD).

Aguirre, The Wrath of God

Good lord, this is unbelievably great. Haunting, mesmerizing, fascinating...Kinski's performance has to be one of the best I've ever seen. See this, yesterday.

10/10

Johhny English: 3/10

This dumbass spy-parody movie would irredeemably suck if it weren't for Rowan Atkinson, who is one of the funniest sumbitches alive and would be hilarious even as King Lear. On the other hand, John Malkovich's career seems deader than Malcolm McDowell's based on his performance here.

Noises Off: 8/10

Anyone who's ever suffered the unique experience of being in a crappy play with a bunch of neurotic actors will cherish this flick, even if it is a bit goofy and overlong. But with Michael Caine, John Ritter, Christopher Reeve, Julie Haggerty, Nicolette Sheridan, Denholm Elliot, and Shirley MacClaine all in the same movie, it's hard to go wrong.

Collateral: 7/10

A step backwards for Michael Mann, as this flick certainly ain't no Heat. But still worth seeing for good performances from both Cruise and Foxx.

Bubba Ho-Tep: 6/10

Bruce Campbell as Elvis (in present day) battling a mummy in a retirement home. If that description doesn't hook you, then the movie won't either. Not bad, but surprisingly depressing at times.

EDIT: out of all the movies listed on this page, Aguirre: The Wrath Of God will kick your ass so hard, your children will be born with bruises.
