Don't you just love it when you watch a highly praised film and it lives up to, and exceeds, your expectations? I watched Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" yesterday and it *blew me away.* I laughed, I cried, and I was thrilled by it. An absolute masterpiece.

Seven Samurai is my proof against anyone who thinks movies like Braveheart were so kewl, cuz Kurosawa invented cinematic techniques and stylistic touches that're still being copied today. If you haven't seen any other Kurosawa stuff, definitely give Rashamon and Sanjuro (a sequel to Yojimbo and a better film IMHO) a try.

 

U-571: 8/10

Excellently crafted little no-bullshit thriller that is exciting as hell while still not downplaying the horrors of naval warfare like a lot of other sub flicks do. Also, it won't insult your intelligence if you know a little something about WWII military tactics and technology, which is terribly refreshing in this Pearl Harbor era. Even little shit like bloodstains are handled more accurately than in most action movies. The ensemble cast does a uniformly fine job, even though I was left wondering what the hell Bon Jovi was doing in this.

 

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind: 6/10

I'm still not quite sure how I feel about this one. Sam Rockwell has sure come a long way since being a Foot Clan ninja in TMNT, it's nice to see Rutger Hauer drawing a paycheck again, and Julia Roberts turns in a ferocious performance that's some of her best work in years; but Drew Barrymore still struggles on that "okay-but-not-great" plateau, and George Clooney must've been way too busy directing to concentrate on his part, cuz he practically sleepwalks thru his part. For a debut directorial effort, Clooney does just fine, and Charlie Kaufman's writing is sharp as always, but there's just something lacking here; it felt hollow and soulless overall. (Though maybe that's intentional, considering it's basically a movie about game shows.) In the end, I just wasn't convinced by any of the spy stuff; I think Barris just made it up entirely based on the flimsy evidence presented here.

Wild Wild West (6/10)

I know most people hate this film and the first time I saw it I fell asleep. However, on a second watch I really don't think it's all that bad. Sure, Salem Hayek is barely in the film, the SFX is crappy in places and the plot is pratically missing but it's still a decent enough film.

Wouldn't know, never seen Chimes at Midnight. Been wanting to for years, but I've never found a copy of it, and I never order a movie online if I haven't already seen it (there's no feeling of rage like finding out you've paid good money to own a shitty movie).

 

Cold Mountain: 4/10

Massive disappointment for me, since I love the director and love the whole cast, but things just didn't click. Some of the dialogue was REALLY bad, the editing seemed arbitrary and impatient (I'd like to know what Minghella's original director's cut looked like), and the villains were the most one-dimensional cackling evil black-hats since the Imperial Stormtroopers. Nicole Kidman and Jude Law, normally such lively & intelligent actors, seem about as compelling as mannequins here. (And why is Donald Sutherland reduced to playing nothing but The Father Who Dies roles these days?) Renee Zellwegger and Phillip Seymour Hoffman try to save the film all by themselves with wonderful performances, but it's too little too late. Well, at least the Sailboat Guy from Mallrats can say he's been in an oscar-winning movie.

 

Passion of the Christ: 5/10

This movie is great at showing Jesus getting the holy shit beaten out of him. Unfortunately, that's what the ENTIRE MOVIE is: two hours of Christ getting punched, kicked, caned, whipped, scourged, stoned, spat on, and finally crucified by a bunch of soldiers who's only character trait is that they really hate the Son of Man. Little storyline, nothing different from a hundred other Jesus movies other than the ridiculous violence. Stan Marsh wasn't far off the mark when he called it a three-hour snuff film. The only reason I liked it as much as I did was cuz having the characters actually speaking Arameaic and imperial Latin is a pretty cool gimmick.

While Jamie Foxx's performance is exceptional, and the film contains some excellent aural and visual moments, I found that the pacing suffered greatly. Were it not for the acting and Best Picture Oscar nomination (though undeserved IMO, receiving such is not a travesty) it would ultimately be forgettable.

Azumi - 6/10. Sometimes boring and sometimes a bit gory, reminded me of BR-I, too bad the history of development and training of the assassins wasnt given more time since the film was over 2 hours and I didnt really buy into the high skills of the kids. Sword movement and death from it was questionable and unrealistic at times. Ninja's were portrayed as jobbers but other villains were ok i guess. Watching this movie made me want to play Dynasty Warriors, which I did and actually had more fun doing.

 

Watch Musa the Warriors princess instead of you want strong characters and greater fight scenes.
