Report: Woman dies watching 'Passion'

 

CHICAGO, Illinois (Reuters) -- A woman died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday while watching the climactic crucifixion scene in "The Passion of the Christ" at a morning showing in Wichita, Kansas, a television station reported.

 

The film was stopped and a nurse in attendance went to the woman's side, KAKE-TV in Wichita reported.

 

"It was the highest emotional part of the movie," a spokeswoman for the station said. A crew from the station was at the special showing, which was sponsored by the ClearChannel Radio chain.

 

The Wichita Eagle newspaper, on its Web site, identified the woman as Peggy Scott, 56, a sales manager for two local radio stations.

 

Employees at KAKE-TV said they knew the woman as Peggy Law, adding they did not think she had any pre-existing health problems.

 

The woman was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, where a spokesman would only say she had been attending a movie. The county coroner's office said an autopsy would be performed.

 

Mel Gibson's film, which opened Wednesday, has been both criticized and praised for its violent, bloody portrayal of Christ's final hours.

I think this is once again the press being ridiculous. I haven't seen the movie yet, I dunno, but would the press cover this as much had someone had a heart attack in Euro Trip or the Teacher's Pet movie?

 

I'm sure people have died in theaters before sans coverage, I think this may be overdoing it, in which I don't understand what their intended goal is.

I'm pretty sure anyone dying while watching a movie would get coverage. Perhaps the coverage was alittle wider due to the movie, but I wouldn't say it's something that would've been ignored.

 

This is no different than during Jaws and Exorcist hysteria.

This is just stupid, and I can't believe that anyone is making a deal about this. It's been all over the news today, when talking about it, that the woman had a condition, and had she been eating at a Red Lobster, sitting at home, or where ever it was still going to happen how it happened.

It got a small locally written (not from AP) article on the front page of the Wichita paper this morning, though it was more of an obit about the woman than about the incident itself. Juxtaposed with it was the BIG article about the sample city response to the movie.

 

And from the pictures they've shown, she didn't look overweight, so cancel that factor out.
