Report: Boy Forced To Wear Skirt As Punishment

Teacher Allegedly Confesses To Putting Dress On Student

POSTED: 4:57 pm EST February 27, 2004

UPDATED: 6:14 pm EST February 27, 2004

A Central Florida preschool faces allegations of punishing children in an unusual and potentially traumatic way after a teacher's reported confession of putting a boy in a girl's dress, according to a Local 6 News report.

The family of a 5-year-old boy who was reportedly put in a yellow dress because he was talking too much said Friday that they plan to file a lawsuit against the Merriday Montessori School.

"It was a form of punishment, because he would not listen, they put him in a dress," the boy's grandmother Brenda Bradley said. "A yellow dress, and had my other grandson and the rest of the class laughing at him."

The details Bradley told Local 6 News about were confirmed in a 43-page Department of Children & Families report obtained by Local 6 News. In the report, the teacher admitted that she put a dress on the boy because, she stated, he was "being unruly."

Local 6 News obtained a copy of the taped interview between the DCF case worker and the 5-year-old child describing the incident:

Child: "When I was watching TV, I was talking too much and Miss Valerie put the dress on me."

DCF worker: "What color was the dress?"

Child: "Yellow."

DCF worker: "With flowers?"

Child: "Um hum. -- they laughed at me with the dress."

DCF worker: "Who?"

Child: "Everyone."

The child's mother, Tiffany Fairlamb, told Local 6 News that the teacher said her son would not listen so she had to put him in a dress, according to the report.

Local 6 News has learned that the case may not have been an isolated incident, according to reporter Wendy Saltzman.

Saltzman said that another child told his mother that a different boy at the school had been punished in the exact same way.

"I think this is a practice that happened more than once, by more than one teacher to more than one student," Fairlamb said.

Local 6 News reported that Merriday Motessori School stonewalled repeated requests for an interview and refused to acknowledge the unsettling allegations.

Local 6 News reported that DCF closed their case without any action, because, they said there was a low level of risk since the family has already removed their two kids from the school.

However, Local 6 News will investigate whether DCF did their job in Friday night's 11 p.m. show and speak to another parent.

I would be insanely pissed and would probably sue as well. I mean it's a freaking 5 year old.

It would take everything in me not to beat the piss out of a teacher who did that to my son.

If the kid is that big of a problem then you'd think the first thing you would do it contact the parent. Not take it upon yourself to scar the child for life.

You think they're gonna sue now?

Wait til the kid grows up and becomes a drag queen.

My math teacher once duck tapped a kid to a chair in 8th grade for moving too much.

This was a little extreme...but what the hell do we expect teachers to do? Can't beat the little bastards and for all we know the boy will be in a dress years from now anyway.

Maybe she helped him discover himself.

Wild and crazy but sue? Come on.

My kindergarden teacher use to pull out a paddle, make the kid bend over...and swear up and down how she was going to lay the beating on them. Most kids would break down and cry for a minute...that's usually when she would send them back to their desks.

When she did it to me I told her my dad said he would beat up any teacher that laid a hand on me (which he said before I started school)...she didn't have much of a reply there

From what I've been told I was in pre-school for a couple of months. Then I got into a fight with some kid on the top of a slide(indoor slide that are like 4feet tall) where he scratched my face trying to cut in front of me so I pushed him over the guard rail on the top of it and sent him to the floor. The kid didn't suffer any substantial injuries but I had to have tetnus shots and what not. The Pre-School teacher said I was the one at fault and my mother said "Screw this", removed me from the program and sent me to this lady who did daycare.

That lady ruled, she made Smurfs statuettes with baking clay.

She could sue him

I think threatening violence agsinst a kid would outdue that...but who knows...everyone wasn't as sue-happy in the mid 80s

You know, this doesn't sound like a bad idea.

I bet that little brat won't act up in class again...

Have you stolen 'bringbackcharlieward's gimmick of sarcasm in every post, or did he steal his lameness from you?

Actually, I'm being dead serious -- It's not like the teacher beat him with a stick or anything.

Send him to the office and notify the kid's parent, is it that hard?

And as for those defending her actions, I'd love to see what your reaction would be if your son came to you and told you that he was forced to wear a dress and be humiliated in front of everyone. "Little brat deserved it" would hardly be your response.

Bah -- sending a kid to the office and telling mommy or daddy about what he did is nothing. Hell, if anything the parent will probably yell at the teacher instead for ruining little Johnny's self-esteem or something.

Actually, I would like to know what my little Satan Spawn did first. If I felt the teacher's actions were warranted, then I wouldn't threaten to sue. Although this will be hard to do for me because I will never have kids because children are evil. On a side note, I was grocery shopping today and chose to wait behind this mom with a brat that was SCREAMING at the top of his lungs. It was so funny trying to watch the mom no-sell her son all the while the cashier and bagger were twitching.

Perhaps if that little heathen was forced to wear a dress every now and then for being bad he'd show some better behavior...

I didn't say I'd sue, but nor would I ever condone her actions, but I have to confess I'd be hard pressed not give a cuff to the little brat in the grocery store.

But the beauty of kids that aren't yours screaming in public places is that you can just sit there and laugh out loud when the parents lose it and go off on those little bundles of joy -- it beats just about any sitcom out there.

Oh, and I would have a problem if the kid had to change his clothes in front of the class in order to get the dress on...

Well thankfully she doesn't act up in public but if she did... I'd just take her home.

If someone tried that with my kid (if she were a boy) I would probably sue the teacher and the school district and make myself some money and send the teacher into bankruptcy and misery.

No, you're supposed to talk REALLY loudly to the person you're with about how parents can't control their kids.

My posts aren't always filled with sarcasm.

But really, back in my early school experiences back once upon a time, telling the parents did absolutely NOTHING, so something like this is probably a good idea. Damn drag queen...

What? someone had to say it eventually.

LOL. Maybe my hatred for small kids (anything under 8) is making me a bit bias. I can imagine Kotz prancing around at night, dressed like Kylie.
