Aristide Leaves Violence-Torn Haiti

After a tense week, Aristide has finally left Haiti (with a sizable chunk of the GDP tucked safely away somewhere no doubt)to the hands of rebels. I doubt that things will get better there before they get worse, we could see another American invasion ala Operation Uphold Democracy in 94.

At least it's not the Americans, look what they've done to Iraq. Talk about a cluster!

Hmm, setting up a working democratic government out of nothing takes a little longer than a few months.

What, precisely, has the UN ever done well?

Their whole point of being in existance is what they have done well. They've brought countries together. Members can debate and vote on subjects. They've done a great job in Bosnia.

I'm still waiting to see the finished American work in Iraq. Which whilst I am aware will take a long time, they should never have gone in there in the first place, which is of course a totally different discussion.

Haiti is? UN have sent in their forces to restore order. America won't lift a finger, there's no oil.

Wrong. Seriously, you should stop posting and wasting bandwith if you continue to do so without having the slightest idea of what the fuck you're talking about. This is the last time I even acknowledge your useless presence on this board until you start doing even a little bit of homework on subjects or learn even a little bit of background. You're a waste of my time.

h4u, Haiti is on America's backyard.

The more conflict down there, the more people trying to get here illegally.

It's faaaaar more our business than France's or Canada's (both of whom are contributing troops)

It's going to be our command.

"The US has dismissed allegations that Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide was kidnapped and forced from power.

With American and French military forces already on the ground in the troubled Caribbean nation, the US said such theories were nonsense.

Mr Aristide was flown out of Port-au-Prince by US troops to a temporary shelter in the Central African Republic on Monday as rebels moved closer to the capital.

But there have since been reports that Mr Aristide is claiming he was forcibly removed."

Wow...if believed seems like the US had an agenda there. Wonder if they funded the rebels. Easier than faking "WMD" I guess.

UN forces ARE being sent there. I've done my homework.

I didn't realise that American troops were there already.

I guess their agena is to halt immigration. Unless they were funding and supporting the rebels.

The situation is bad either way, Aristide is corrupt, and the Rebels are not helping. People of Hati will be fucked for a while. Aristide might as well stay with the US officials, because if he go back to Hati it's mostly likely he's going to get killed.

What is "trolling" ? I'm partaking in a thread and putting across my thoughts on the subject, that's all.

Let's see from the rules:

2. Trolls will be automatically banned. Trolling is defined as the consistent posting of useless material with the intention of getting off-topic and specifically eliciting and inciting undesirable responses from users reading the thread.

Yup.

Nope, i'm not trolling.

Taking part in a thread is not trolling. I do not consistantly post useless material with intention of getting off topic nor am I specifically eliciting and inciting undesirable responses from users reading the thread.

It's funny how I don't claim "troll!" at anyone who disagrees with my opinions.

If there IS a troll in this folder it's MikeSC.

Whatever. You come in and post about how horrid America is and that we're only interested if there's oil OVER AND OVER again. Nice.

Because hey, we all know there was oil in Kosovo and Bosnia and Somalia and all those other places we've been to. Oh, and allow me to laugh my ass off when you say that Bosnia was handled well by the UN. We had to bail them out there, plain and simple.

The same Bosnia that we had to step in and stop the atrocities because the UN wouldn't do so?

And, no, we didn't get their support to do that.

Well, the U.N has had nearly 60 years to prove its usefulness and has failed the test.

Horribly.

I feel touched that you mention me.

Of course, you have this annoying habit of running off without, you know, knowing what the heck you're talking about.

I've seen people go off on that oil rant, and then watched the guy he was debating bring up Afghanistan, and the first guy literally started stuttering.

This is pure speculation on my part, but the primary reason the US is involved in Haiti is to prevent an even worse crisis than is already happening, thus preventing an exodus of refugees fleeing to the States. So in that sense, it is in America's best interest to bring back stability to Haiti.

And, slightly off topic, I just know that there's going to be some movement for the invasion of Cuba, just like there was after the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, but that'll never happen.

Posted

Why bother overthrowing Cuba these days? It had a point back in the 60s when he was in cahoots with the Russians during the Cold War, but now he's just an ineffectual old man who's barely keeping the country together. He'll probably die sometime soon, at which point we'll find out how dedicated the rest of his commie government is.

Ok, I'll admit that, off the top of my head, I don't know *exactly* where Haiti is. However, I think I have a good idea (it's down and around all those other island nations like Cuba and the Dominican Republic are, isn't it?). In any case, the point I want to make is this:

You seem to be implying that it is virtually no business of France or Canada's. While I can easily see the argument against France, Canada, as you know, borders the US. So if it's the business of the US, don't you think it's only fair that Canada, which is also close to Haiti (albeit, not AS close as the US) should make this it's business as well?

Not that I think that Canada SHOULD be involved; But I just think it should be said that any problems which could arise in the states because of this, could spread to Canada fairly easily, couldn't they?
