Bonds got steroids, feds were told

Slugger's trainer said to have given substances to several athletes

San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, New York Yankees stars Jason Giambi and Gary Sheffield and three other major league baseball players received steroids from a Burlingame nutritional supplement lab, federal investigators were told.

The baseball stars allegedly got the illegal performance-enhancing drugs from the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative through Greg Anderson, Bonds' personal weight trainer and longtime friend, according to information furnished the government and shared with The Chronicle.

In addition to Bonds, Giambi and Sheffield, the other baseball players said to have received steroids from BALCO via Anderson were two former Giants, outfielder Marvin Benard and catcher Benito Santiago, and a former A's second baseman, Randy Velarde.

Oakland Raiders linebacker Bill Romanowski also was said to have received performance-enhancing drugs.

Anderson allegedly obtained a so-called designer steroid known as "the clear" and a testosterone-based steroid known as "the cream" from BALCO and supplied the substances to all six baseball players, the government was told. In addition, Bonds was said to have received human growth hormone, a powerful substance that legally cannot be distributed without a prescription, investigators were told.

The article goes on after that but the shit just hit the fan.

Nice of Anderson to completely change his story like that.

I'll believe Bonds more than I'll believe Anderson now. The guy changes his story when he finds out the President gives a damn about steriods in baseball? Oh yeah, somebody isn't trying to get a deal.

Is it possible? Sure.

Do I believe Anderson or a story in the San Fran chronicle? No.

Just as important, both the Giants and Yankees need these guys or else their WS hopes just flew out the window. Good news for Toronto and San Diego though.

NY happen to have about 3-5 other sure fire HOFers on the team...they can survive without him.

New York loses 2 guys that they absolutely need to have in their lineup. They already have pitching problems (Brown got hurt after two days with the Yanks, and Lieber is still out). Unless you expect A-Rod to do it all himself. That sure worked in Texas didn't it?

Assuming they do lose Giambi and Sheffield (lets ignore the case that they don't for now), does anyone else think they can still beat Boston?

And I'm sure Giambi and Sheffield and Bonds are all stupid enough to be on steroids now. There is no actual proof of them testing positive at any point, so unless you can show that they tested positive last year, then leave them alone until they test positive again. Also, first didn't Anderson say that Bonds was offered Steroids and HGH and turned them down, and we all know how adamant Sheff has been about proving his innocene. For all we know, these guys could have been given what they thought was a new, top-quality, and LEGAL, supplement, when it was actually THG or something to that effect. I mean if you are a up and coming "nutritional supplement" company, what better way to make money and gain more clients if you are given guys stuff they think is clean and it turns out to be dirty, and undetectable. They think you and your scientists are geniuses and pay top dollar and refer you to all of their athlete friends.

Yes Bonds, Giambi, and Sheffield all will play this season as this still isn't proof that they are guilty but it certainly raises the level of suspicion. The only way the'll miss any time this year is if they were dumb enough to obtain steroids another way this offseason and test positive. On top of it that's only if they test positive twice before there is finally a supsension of like two weeks. Obviously IF they were using steroids before given to them from BALCO they wouldn't have been doing them this offseason. Even if they didn't know they were taking the steroids it still means they were on the steroids and it still puts into question the legitimacy of Barry Bonds 73 homerun season.

All of this of course brings into question again why the hell did Giambi say he only lost four pounds? Why would he just make it up? Also something that hasn't been talked about much was Bonds saying that they made the baseballs softer last year and that's why homeruns were down. Curt Schilling came out the next day and said that was a load of crap. Why would Bonds lie about that? What's his motivation to just simply make up a story about baseballs being softer?

That explains Benito Santiago's monster season of 2002

How does Curt Shilling disagreeing with him make him a liar?

Damn that Randy Velarde.

And if Bonds is on steroids there is no *, he would get yanked from the books I would imagine.

Bull. Babe Ruth used a corked bat at some point. Lets yank him from the record book. Gaylord Perry doctored baseballs. Gone. Players have been exploiting the rules since the beginning of the game.

Bleached hair? So he's gone from skinny geek to badass to metrosexual. Hm.

That's what NYC does to you

Plus da Boss likes them that way

god, Giambi was so fucking badass with Oakland...

Now...he's a little bitch.

I bet if he stuck around in Oakland, he wouldn't be hammered with this...

What was the rule on the book about steroids when they were taking them? Did it even have a policy? So were they cheating?
